The whole thing with Isabella (flower girl) singing in majors instead of minors and overly enunciating is a really excellent piece of character work by Miranda. She's the 'perfect' character, so it makes sense that she would sing her parts 'perfectly.'
If you listen to "What Else Can I Do?" you notice her voice changes as other changes occur which is great story telling through vocals. She has the traditional Disney princess voice in this song.
It's like every Disney princess, being perfect, dolares is shy so it's silent, mirabel is happy and deep, and the son changes his tone cuz he can shape shift, Miranda is such a genius
There's a lot of things Miranda did well with this song. Dolores singing softly, and the fact that they're all singing together in such a way, being that their family name is Madrigal - which is having multiple parts being sung at the same time. I think it's quite a beautiful message for the overarching theme of the movie. They all have their own separate powers/strengths/stories, but they come together as one family - and they're better when they are finally together as one. 😊
The use of minor/major to set character traits is very ABBA-esque, or by more modern standatds Nightwish/Opeth land.
never seen the flim and I don't want to see it because of the hype but I kind of like the song thou its over-hyped at the moment
The funniest part of this video is Joel explaining context snippets back to us, like we haven't all already seen Encanto 3x+ and listened to this song 20x+

The fact that Camillo's (the shapeshifter) voice act had never done any VA work before this really says a lot about his natural talent.
Wait was Camillo the va's first ever role??
@@addxietyy I believe so, yh
@@addxietyy yeah it's his first 'voice' acting (and singing) role but not his first acting role in general. He's done live action acting for serialized shows before. His names Rhenzy Feliz if you're interested.
@@samantha5486 Damn man i hope then he'll get lots of good va offers because he really killed his work portraying Camilo's character.
Yes it is
I love that cousin Dolores was on top of Bruno's story, "always left abuela and the family fumbling, grappling with prophesies they couldn't understand".. that's the whole story right there.
She and Isabela are the oldest, so they remember Bruno more than the other kids. And of course, Isabela got the good fortune, so she had no reason for concern, leaving only Dolores to spill the truth.
@@IceMetalPunk And also because Dolores can hear everything, she knows Bruno never left the house and probably heard everything that Bruno says alone while the whole family never had an idea about his feelings.
@@IceMetalPunk Not quite. Isabela's was also a curse, because the life she dreamed of was not perfect like her family wanted. She plays it off as a good thing, but it's not to her. Also, Dolores's gift allows her to have heard everything that happened with Bruno, she knows he's still there and that he's misunderstood.
@@babycakelings it wasn't a curse; he told her she would get the life of her dreams, but he never specified what it was, so she assumed he means the 'perfect' life she was forced to live, when in reality the prophecy meant her becoming free
@@donkeykong3628 For her, it's a curse either way. If she belives it's the "perfect" life she was forced to live, then she belives she will never be happy and will always just be acting for the family. If she belives it's the life she actually wants, then she knows that she's somehow going to "mess it up" and dissapoint the family. Either way, she'd probably view it as a curse.
I love how this song was structured like a villian song and his design is too with his color and eyes and such. But if you actually look at the lyrics none of it is his fault they just blame him.
someone I was talking to about this also pointed out that Bruno's powers are the same shade of green that disney typically uses for villains too, so we subconsciously associate that color with "evil"
@@nystrial8020 yes even in Breaking Bad they used colors to display moods and other stuff or like Harry Potter or Star wars with the lightsabers. Disney uses red and sometimes green for evil like glowing eyes that's why people are confused because he's a good character
Yeah. And if you listen to the ONE person who speaks about him currently is actually quite kind. She empathises with him and states the distance is because nobody understands.
@@Blackdragon99omfg and even the villagers just say predictable ones. Like fish dying. And they blame him for saying it out loud because "it seals the fate"
@@nystrial8020 yeah I saw that, just didn't want to say it and repeat it.
It always makes me laugh seeing Bruno vibing on the balcony behind Mirabel and Dolores at 1:19 - 1:21 .
AHAHAHAH YOU'RE RIGHT, I didnt notice before, and actually I think is Jorge
Haha Did not see that before
Also he can be seen walking around earlier to end up where he is
@TheSportsGuru whooosh
@TheSportsGuru It's a whooosh moment because Jorge is one of Bruno's acting personas
"Oh it's Colombian, I thought it was Mexican" _you have no idea how much misery you invoked with that single sentence_
Frr I literally laughed so hard because when people hear Spanish music usually the first thing that comes to their mind is that it’s Mexican.
Love when he says at 3:22 "There is so much happening". As a Colombian I can say yeah, the movie really captures the vibrant life in Colombia. A melting pot of cultures, races and musical influences.

This has to be one of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s best songs. So many melodies smushed together to make a king of a song
He actually has used a similar idea in the past of taking different parts and melodies of a song and layering them together. One example would be in the song the Non-Stop in Hamilton (final track of act 1) there a section at the end that has Washington, Eliza, Angelica, and Burr all singing different melodies from earlier in the musical but it comes together I think similarly to this.
@@emilycheng5897 Ah, haven’t watched Hamilton so I didn’t know that
Also in a song named '9600' from 'In the heights'
@@silpilver 96,000 bro
Thats called a madrigal :)
This song is so catchy that there’s been like many MANY times where people have started randomly singing it at school and people just join in and it’s great-
Maaaaan, this is what happens when you give the most talented creator in their field a nearly unlimited budget and say “have fun.” More of LMM making killer stuff. I don’t care if it’s with Disney or not, I just want MORE!
Interesting fact about Isabela's part in this, the way she's written in the movie has her as, to quote Mirabel, "the perfect golden child". As a result when she sings it's, as you pointed out, in a major key and her diction is perfect to give it a traditional Disney princess vibe.
Interesting that he pointed out that her part had a "pop" sound, as her solo song What Else Can I Do? was written in the style of a 90s Latin Pop song.
Don't be shy, react to the other songs. Especially Surface Pressure because Jessica really did a great job on Luisa's character.
Yes!!! This song is severely underrated
Oh my god, yes. I fucking love that one almost more than this one
Yes love this. Gave me chills first time I saw it!! So many cool changes.
Yep and its also very relatable
At least I'm expecting reactions on "Surface Pressure" and "Dos Oruguitas", amazing pieces.
1:20 Bruno just vibing on the balcony in the background
3:44, yes, exactly. Bruno’s power is to see the future
Next you should react to Surface Pressure from Encanto, where the lead singer has a cool alto voice and awesome mixed voice!
Yes!
I don't quite understand why this particular song is the popular one over the Luisa's song....I love the under the surface song
@@hkandm4s23 agreed. it is also more relatable
And also the Freaking Awesome lyrics too!
Trrruueeeeeee
If you’re focusing on songwriting, you should take a look on surface pressure. It’s genius and the song is amazing too.
That song sparks a genuine emotional reaction for me 😂 Disney’s just here calling out my emotional trauma
Yess
Yes!
Yes! That’s my favourite song from Encanto
That’s the best song in the film by miles
1:41 : the "Hey" it sounds like "pain" from song Believer
One of my favorite things that someone pointed out abt the song is how during Dolores' part because of her gift, the sound effects get louder like their footsteps and hearing their skirts ruffling, etc. it's such a neat thing to add during her part. Also I remembered one of the producers(?) tweet about how Agustin was watching Felix and Camillio then joining in on the dancing but he's offbeat is really cool, the people who worked on Encanto put alot of small details it's amazing
While I like "we don't talk about Bruno", I actually prefer "surface pressure". It's a very relatable song and currently stuck in my head.
i cried because of how relatable it is 😅
Surface pressure hits hard, but I like "waiting on a miracle" most. Dunno why tho...
i love surface pressure, but what else should i do is just so... relatable
@@justsomeboredchicsyt9664 waiting on a miracle is so underrated
Yeah it's my favorite but we don't talk about Bruno is a very close second!
This sounds so much different than your typical Disney song. It has much more of a musical theater vibe, which is why I love it. And everyone's unique voices and styles makes the song more enjoyable to sing along to.
Oh my God! What a gorgeous montage! I'm glad that it got into the recommendations, I subscribe now. You're very charismatic.
5:17 After taking tours of Disney's music department, they quite literally only hire the best of the best musicians when recording music. Even their live performers at Disneyland have to go through a cut throat audition process. When I was in highschool, my drumline coach at the time was also performing at Disneyland and he told me that he had to go through a few auditions just to get the job and 100's of other drummers didn't make the cut, but were still highly skilled/talented. So yeah Disney only takes the best that the world offers.
Fun fact: The Madrigal family are named after a song form know as a "Madrigal". They consist of multiple unique voices singing a different melody from each other.
What's funny is that Joel NEVER mentions that. I would think that him with all his musical knowledge would have picked up on that real fast. Oh well.
Well... If he's not seen the movie, he wouldn't have known about their surname? I don't think it's mentioned in that song, and he could have missed it on wiki page.
@@MrsScorpionette tru, i was just saying for the people that don't know
@@JaneCMusic1 haha for sure, I was saying it more towards the other commenter under your comment.
Yah,it's a cool easter egg not many notice.
It's the perfect example of the genius that is Lin-Manuel Miranda. That the different harmonies collide in the end part is pretty similar to Lin's song "Non-Stop" from Hamilton: all the characters melodies and lines collide in the end part and it just fells....amazing. And the mix of the different styles are just so fitting. Lin just makes the best songs that bang and slap just really hard.
The same with 96000 in In The Heights! Lin just loves doing those mashups but they are amazing and feel so different each time.
i looooove Non Stop 🔥
Fun fact! That type of Lyrical composition is known as- a Madrigal!
“There’s so much going on” is exactly what I love about this song. There’s so much happening all at once but it’s all so cohesive and together and it’s beautiful and vibrant and it just explodes with this emotion and color that I don’t normally hear in a lot of songs.
Renaming the character Bruno (explained at 6:30) is also such a LMM move! In the second Hamilton song, 'Aaron Burr, Sir', Lin made up a short story about Hamilton punching someone in the school's admin office (sometimes called the Bursar) so he could use "Bursar" in the song "Burr, sir".
Nobody's going to talk about his groovy freestyle solo?? Like that was epic, we need more Joel!!
soo groovy :)
Stank face whole time 🔥🔥🔥
So true
we don't talk about solo, no no no ♫ (that solo was actually hot fire)
Joel: searches the lyrics on most parts Also joel: ignores the mumbling part
Maybe he picked up a bit and noticed it's the same lyrics over each other?
he's got lots of practice listening to mumble rap
@@3bodYking99 Dolores is not repeating what she's saying?
@@donkeykong3628 not sure about that, been a while since i focused on the different parts of the songs, I know that she is saying she hears bruno now when isabelle was telling mirabel to "STFU"
I like that he can pick it up so fast on the piano and then just vibe with it. It's also cool that he did alittle solo on the piano when the song was playing.
Funny enough you can see him in the background when the second person sings. He’s up top just vining to them singing about not talking about him it’s so funny and I can no longer not see him every time I see that scene. And she also says later in the song how she can hear him. She’s literally telling everyone multiple times in that one song she can hear him and no one listens to her unless it’s convenient and I feel that so heavily
Joel: literally predicting everything that happens in the movie Me: gasping at every plot twist
Paused the video just to see this comment lol. Every prediction is spot on. Maybe 'cause it's cliche especially when it's a Disney movie.
@@athulk2736 it's because it's for kids tbh, when they don't lay enough groundwork kids lose too much of the plot and Disney loses the 7-13 year olds that care about the storyline and not just colors and sounds.
I mean it wasn't a plot twist to be honest. This song makes it clear that everyone is just wrong about blaming Boruno. I don't think the producers were trying to go for a plot twist
@@athulk2736 yeah encanto was great although apparently predictable to most people. 😅

I love this movie and the music and colors and the story behind it. I love all of the songs, but my favorite 2 are We don’t talk about Bruno and Surface Pressure. My favorite 2 parts in We don’t talk about Bruno is Dolores where she’s quiet “rapping” and then Camilo where he can change into other people, his voice is just soothing and I love it. This song has been in my head non stop I’m always singing it.
I love the fact that Joel nailed Bruno's character story (not actually evil) and his power (fortune telling). From literally just one song. That's crazy.

React to dos oruguitas. I don't see many people talking about it here. But it is my favourite song in the whole movie. It plays towards the end of the movie while abuela's story is being told and it is really very emotional. Understanding the meaning of the movie and listening to it will really make you cry. The singer, Sebastian Yastra is also just amazing.

Wow that reference you made with V-for-Vendetta at 0:39 is actually a spit image. Also: Roomie looking sharp with those glasses ngl. o.O
I learned recently that the family name has a double meaning. Madrigal is a part-song for several voices, especially one of the Renaissance period, typically arranged in elaborate counterpoint and without instrumental. I remember trying to do them in choir a long time ago, but totally forgot that word till this song came out

Did no one notice Isabela sings “I’m fine” at the end of the song (at the end of her verses when they all sing)? It’s so creative cause the other singers hide it, and especially with Isabella’s proposal coming up I think she was starting to freak out and of course her song being next where we learn the truth

I honestly don't get why "We don't talk about Bruno" is taking off so much lately? I acknowledge that it is very good and absolutely a groove, but I think "Surface pressure" is the best song from that movie.
I disagree! Surface pressure is not bad, but it's hook is not nearly as memorable as WDTAB. One listen and it'll stick in your head. It's also not nearly as groovy.

The reason isabella (flower girl) sounds so different, is not only because she's supposed to be the "perfect" one but while she's in the perfect persona she's supposed to resemble the "disney princess" type and she actually shows that in how she sings here. If you go react to her solo "what else can i do" (my favorite song from the movie) you can hear it change.
I was legit talking to my partner today about how Bruno gets blamed for everything even though it isn't his fault that any of it happens
Ikr thats what I've been saying like he just tells the future he dosent create it
He´s just the messenger, its like blaming the mailman because you received a letter with bad news
I was so ridiculously excited for him to get to the end part with them all singing their verses at the same time. It’s like the audio equivalent of every frame being a painting-every note a symphony
What I like about this reaction is it's not over the top or forced. A lot of creators reacting to Encanto songs stop them every 10 seconds, say "whoa that was so good, let me play that again" and repeat that 10 times and that's like 90% of their video xD
It was hard for me too, to hear most of the lyrics when I first watched the song (I couldn’t focus) but a few rewatches later I got to understand how amazing the song really is
You know it's a really good song when Joel say's "Sick!", sings with his own ad lips, and does a solo play HAHA
We've watched Encanto so many times and this is the one that gets stuck in everyone's head. I find myself singing it throughout the day, every day. It wasn't even my favorite but definitely the most catchy.
I really liked your piano solo bit! Seems like you can figure out chord progressions quickly and then slap down the solos. Nice!

They all recorded these on their own respective homes too! Cause it was pandemic so working on this is like arranging piece by piece of a puzzle..
I really think Disney thought ‘What Else Can I Do?’ would be the next ‘Let It Go’, they’re quite similar and you can hear parts of it on the promos. But Lin Manuel gave us a song we HAVE to talk about (eyyyy) 😍

@@riyak.7393 Hell yeah. There needs to be a sequel or a series focusing on Pepa's side of the family. They were seriously underutilized in this movie. I know it was more about Mirabel and her side but to me don't create all these interesting characters and then give them NOTHING to really do in the movie. Don't make them fillers as I call it.
Of course we all know about Lin-Manuel's "Hamilton", and the part where all the characters' parts melt together at the end of this, immediately reminded me of the end of "Non-Stop" in Hamilton, but ALSO reminded me of a song in Lin's other musical "In The Heights" called "Blackout". Almost the entirety of the song is all the characters singing each their part on top of each other, to really emphasize the chaos around them, and it's just SO GOOD! If you're a fan of Hamilton, Moana and Encanto I can highly recommend giving the "In The Heights" soundtrack a listen! OH! Also, fun fact: at 1:02 you can actually see Bruno sneak around in the background.
this man is so talented
I thought I was going to hate Encanto, as I really did not like Frozen. And in general, musicals aren't really my thing. But man the movie was a breath of fresh air. I absolutely adored the characters. The animation was great, and the music was insanely catchy. WAY better than anything in Frozen. The only flaw the film has is it kind of wraps up the story too quickly (so they set up these emotionally heavy plot points, but don't give characters enough time to be fleshed out with their emotions).
yes, its such a pity that Disney rushed this movie, they probably didn't have a thought about it getting this famous, but yea, the reason the characters didn't have too much time because Disney didn't have time and just wanted to release the film
I mean tbf there's a lot of characters in this movie, so they just decided to focus on the more interesting ones. If an encanto sequel or a disney+ series comes, then we might see more screentime for the other characters.
Your comment got copied from a sub bot
I also had a problem with that, wish the movie was longer for those reasons
yes finally someone pointed it out! I see a lot of praise for the movie, which is great, but I think it's good to critique it too. As nice as it was (way better than frozen), I didn't find myself getting emotional at the end because it was all so fast! They introduce Luisa as feeling so much pressure but they never show you anything that would indicate that (like from abuela). I feel like bruno was owed an apology that he never got. Idk there was some crucial parts missing for me. But it was overall refreshing like u said
The one with the major chords was also the only one with something positive Bruno predicted it sounds like. So it could be Miranda switched it up to match that.
Well Isebella is suffocated by having to be perfect all the time so she is complaining as well.

Literally, I love how you said that freaking Hamilton guy he’s so freaking talented. There’s like my opinion of Lin-Manuel Miranda summed up like how can one person be both humble, and yet one of the most talented people at the same time it’s just not fair to the rest of us.
The fact that he almost guessed the whole plot after watching the song- 😳
I think the townspeople’s segment lays the foundation for the viewer to surmise that Bruno is being scapegoated. This fvcking movie… 😍
@@conservativesaresymps Yeppp >< this movie is waayy too good
Bro I screamed when i saw this notification ive been waiting for this
Oh my god so my friends are obsessed with this song. and this morning before study block they sang the entire song together word for word. it was honestly impressive
I didn't really care for this song too much and then watching your reaction to it and hearing you break it down now makes me like it and want to hear it again. :)
Fun fact: they didn’t submit this song to an Oscar because they didn’t believe in its potential
That is the worst screwup I’ve seen in my life
yeah but Dos Orugitas was special to lin manuel i think that song was the one he was most proud of
@@lonniegabbie it’s my favorite
why don't they submit it to a Bruno then?
@@obviouslybuttonman became we don't take about bruno no no no
well, time to watch thiss
As someone who saw it at the cinema when it was first released I can categorically state that the Bare Necessities from The Jungle Book is the best Disney song ever, maybe not the most commercial, but certainly the best. King Of The Swingers is next and a surprising entry at number three is You're Welcome as sung by Dwayne Johnson in Moana. It's the catchiness of the tunes and the simple but clever lyrics.
Don't know if someone else said this but the flower sister was the only one with a positive prophecy so it made sense her part would be in major. I saw a different video breaking down how in very specific situations, you can squeeze a major chord in a minor song and it make sense. Miranda is a genius for using it here.
Joel definitely check out Surface Pressure from Encanto too! It's got some pretty cool twists and turns and interesting switch-ups with instruments. I think you'll love it. It's a close race between that song and this one.
This song is living rent free in my head (as is Surface Pressure) and I don't even mind. There's so much nuance.
at 7:20 those chords go major because her prediction was positive - „He told me that life of my dreams will be promised and some day will be mine“, „he told me that my power will grow and thrive...“ while everyone's was negative, and they talked about Bruno negatively
Read an article that said the overlapping of vocals (while they are plating the table) is referred to in music as a madrigal, which is also the family's last name.
