Directed by Academy Award® winner Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award® winner Tony Kushner, “West Side Story” tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. This reimagining of the beloved musical stars Ansel Elgort (Tony); Rachel Zegler (María); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); Ana Isabelle (Rosalía); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); and Rita Moreno (as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works). Moreno - one of only three artists to be honored with Academy®, Emmy®, GRAMMY®, Tony® and Peabody Awards - also serves as one of the film’s executive producers.
Bringing together the best of both Broadway and Hollywood, the film’s creative team includes Kushner, who also serves as an executive producer; Tony Award® winner Justin Peck, who choreographed the musical numbers in the film; renowned Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor and GRAMMY Award® winner Gustavo Dudamel, who helmed the recording of the iconic score; Academy Award®-nominated composer and conductor David Newman (“Anastasia”), who arranged the score; Tony Award®-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (“Fun Home,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie”), who supervised the cast on vocals; and Grammy®-nominated music supervisor Matt Sullivan (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Chicago”), who served as executive music producer for the film. The film is produced by Spielberg, Academy Award®-nominated producer Kristie Macosko Krieger and Tony Award®-winning producer Kevin McCollum. “West Side Story” has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway show, with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins.
From 20th Century Studios, The Walt Disney Company will release “West Side Story” in U.S. theaters on December 10, 2021.

  • I'm so glad it seems like Rachel's got a real "theatre voice" instead of the pop style voices used so often now. She only sang a little in the trailer, but her vibrato sounds beautiful

  • I love the original movie but after watching Steven Spielberg's version, I was mesmerized. I don't usually go for remakes of 'classics' but it was absolutely brilliant from start to finish. The cinematography, the costumes, the choreography, the voices and the the actors - so well cast. The addition of Rita Moreno cemented it all. Absolute masterpiece. Emotionally charged throughout and tears flowing at the end. I loved, loved, loved it!!!

  • Although I am a great fan of the Classic version of West Side story, the remake was incredible! The original version hit the theaters on August 19, 1957 - I was not even born. So I was elated when I saw the previews. I had my doubts about a remake, and I was shocked when I heard Stephen Spielberg was the director, but the cast pulled it off gracefully and honored the original version while twisting it into a new rendition. I was so happy to see Rita Moreno in both movies. The different sceneries worked with each song, and they dove deeper into some scenarios. They selected the perfect protagonists, Rachel Zegler, as Maria and Ansel Elgort, as Tony, and Ariana Debose, who played the role of Anita, was magnificent. The entire cast deserves a standing ovation!

This was more modern but that didn't detract from anything, the dancing and singing was stupendous, the acting A1, l did cry but not all the way through which must have pleased the people in front. Well done with this remake.

  • We have to thank Tony Kushner for giving Anita and Maria more agency this time. This was the first thing that stroke me when I watched the trailer. Maria has plans, wants to study, have a life in America. In the 1961 version, her plans weren't as explicit. Tony also made it clear that Maria was an adult in Spielberg’s version, which is to me important too. There is no ambiguity anymore. I’m surprised no one noticed that in the reviews.

      @eldiran2@eldiran22 жыл бұрын
    • That was the song Rita Moreno featured in. She's in this too (in a different role), so I'm hoping that's a good sign they'll keep the song. She did sing one of the leads in it. Would seem a shame not to include it as an homage if nothing else.

      @harleycynofficial@harleycynofficial2 жыл бұрын
    • I have mixed feelings with that song "America." At least in the 1961 version, it sounded and was danced as Spanish. From Spain. Flamenco, to be more precise. Ask any Puerto Rican whether they spontaneously dance Spanish Flamenco dances, or sing Spanish Flamenco songs. Chilean here. I haven't seen anyone from any Latin American country who does, unless they are Spanish themselves, or first generation immigrants. We are Hispanic, not Spanish. Is a very common mistake you see in many movies and TV series, putting Flamenco music in scenes with Latino people, notwithstanding their origin. Which is an even deeper mistake is that the Spaniards who arrived here brought their XVI century music and not Flamenco, which is from late XVIII century. And, of course, Puerto Rican music isn't the same as Cuban, Mexican, Colombian, Chilean, Argentinean, Peruvian, etc., not to speak about Brazilian music, which is a quite different stuff. Mixed feelings, to say the least.

  • “West Side Story” is our family’s longtime favorite movie that we’ve watched countless times and know every line and lyric. We listened to the soundtrack often and the red album cover with the fire escapes was always at the front of our record rack. As a little girl when it was first released, it was an introduction into musical theatre that became a lifetime passion. Decades later, I met Rita Moreno backstage at Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts where I was a publicist and shared with her how much West Side Story was an inspiration of our family’s love for theater. Whenever I play piano, I’d always play “Somewhere” - one of my all-time favorite songs that is so beautiful it always touches my heartstrings. I’m so excited to see Steven Spielberg’s remake which will no doubt be his musical masterpiece. When it’s released this December, our family will gather to see our first movie together since the long pandemic shutdown - what a great Christmas gift! 🎶🎥🎶

In the original the lines felt sharper, much more dry and lacked emotion a bit. So, I enjoyed this version a bit more for that. You can't deny, however, the dancing and singing in the first film are extraordinary. And Anita, I mean, what can you say?
