Main theme of Schindler's List as a tribute to John Williams
during honoring his achievements at AFI Life Achievement Award 2016 (as the first composer honoree).
Conductor: Gustavo Dudamel
American Youth Symphony
Soloist: Simone Porter
I have always wanted to see John Williams's own reaction to this theme and here it is!
I do not own any copyright of the video.

  • When Spielberg asked John Williams to write the score for Schindler’s List he showed him an early cut of the movie. Williams stood up and walked out of the screening room. He came back in a few minutes later crying and said “you need someone better than me to write music for this.” And Spielberg said, “I know, but everyone better than you are dead.”

  • The sheer genius of John Williams....just incredible. Plenty of movie composers....but the depth of his work especially this one...it's visceral and moves you to a whole other plane. You can see him living the music he wrote. Just brilliant.

  • 3:12 Williams looks like a most critical maestro, overseeing the absolute correctness of the intonation and interpretation of his masterpiece, himself. If I knew I'm fixed by these attentive eyes, I'd be too nervous to play like her. And still: To me, this was the most moving interpretation I've ever heared, with even better emotional dynamics than all of Perlman's interpretations I know. Splendid!

  • I had the absolute pleasure of getting to see the Maestro conduct the Pittsburgh Symphony in his "Music of the Movies." He told a story about being invited to compose Schindler's List by Steven Spielberg. John said that he went to Steven's house to screen the movie and when he was done, he said, "Steven, I'm not good enough for this." Steven replied, "I know, but everyone else is dead!" The auditorium erupted in laughter. He is a once in a generation master.
