Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. Based on a true story, the film focuses on the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two-time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks, Best Actor, 1993, Philadelphia; Best Actor, 1994, Forrest Gump), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. The two men are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.

  • Captain Phillips and Maersk received multiple daily reports of pirate attacks in the area and warnings to stay more than 600 miles from the coast. Instead, Captain Phillips chose to sail as close to 250 miles from shore, and the ship was within three hundred miles of shore when the ship was attacked.

    • yeah, but he was saving the company on their number one expense: fuel. Captain Phillips is a hero because he's a company man (saves the company money with his bravery) who saved lives, and not just any lives: he saved employee lives (company is spared restaffing, existing crew experiences a lesser degree of horror and therefore has less trauma to heal from (the insurance company doesn't change the rate for their benefits package) This story is revered because of him NOT being a dumb lame nerd, but you wouldn't know what that feels like, would you?! That's because you're a nerd.

  • The biggest mistake(s) was Captain Phillips constantly underestimating the pirates. He legit tries talking to the leader like he's 5 in the very start. The may not have education as far as we know of but they do have experience, this is all they do. They also probably haven't grown up in the best of conditions so I'm sure they can spot when someone's trying to pull one over them.

    • The biggest mistake was he only going 600miles off the shore when he was supposed to go more than 1200miles. Everyone knows there's pirates and to avoid them they take longer farther route but they were behind deadline nd he wanted to save money so he thought not going that far was not necessary. His crewmates even filed lawsuit against him for this.

    • The pirate leader speaks and reads at least 2 languages. That's more of an education than most Americans have.

    • Yes the freakishly rare situations like kidnapped by pirates is a case for gun ownership. Not sure it outweighs the common problems of accidents, suicides, and fits of rage that end in tragedy.
