Ranger vs HiLux vs Colorado vs Navara vs D-Max vs Triton 2019 review
We've brought together the six most popular dual cab 4x4 utes in Australia to compare against each other.
It's a mix of specs - we wanted to keep it relatively even across the price ranges, but there's still a bit of a gap between the models on show. They are: Ford Ranger XLT Bi-turbo, Toyota HiLux SR5, Holden Colorado Z71, Nissan Navara N-Trek, Mitsubishi Triton GLS Premium and Isuzu D-Max LS-T.
With prices between $52k and $61k, value will play a part in this test - but so will the performance of each of these pickup trucks during our on-road testing, and also how they perform off road.

Fully agree!! Nice all-around review.
love this comprehensive simplicity 👏👏👏
COOL!!! This is a comparison video review. Cobgratulations guys!!!!
Well done great comparison having people also sitting at back you get a better perspective... There all good in there right.. but I'm glad the Ford Ranger was your choice in the end..
Great comprehensive review. As a previous Hilux owner it was good to see it's off road capability still right up there. Saw there was a woman in the team - would love to see a woman journalist to camera and maybe the incorporation of some environment issues. Love your work guys - so useful when it comes to sorting before buying.
Bottom line, they're all good! Just pick the one that visually suits your eyes, satisfies your needs and matches your wallet 😁
Bloody great words of wisdom, mate! Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty
Very well said.
Well said,,probably take ur advice...
Great comment, you're right
Choose the best name Ford
How does the 4cyl or V6 Amarok rank in this comparison?
Just because these utes are the most bought doesn’t mean they’re the ones to buy! This is basically where you guys come in and why we watch these vids
Fully agree with your statement there mate 👍
What's your pick mate?
Honestly, for the last five years none! The bt-50 and raptor ranger are about the best I reckon, and obviously both for very different reasons, but none actually tick all the boxes for me, here’s my thoughts compiled Below. Let’s start with the no’s straight up! Anything European! so that rules out merc, and VW, yeah good engines 3 litre, powerful comfortable, woopdy do!. Do I trust either brand, nope! I don’t trust them and wouldn’t want it if you bought it for me (I’d sell and buy accessories instead). Customer service?? that’s another f up! Price? umm I didn’t r realise it was a privilege for the company that I buy their brand of car, so no in that principle alone. You want my money? give me better service and a better price! Top-ota? Cruiser, yeah ok why not, well they’re never on sale, rear axel needs replaced, alternator very low has river crossing problems, so let’s spend 70/90 k and fix what’s should be stock! So no. Deemed reliable, 400,000 kms still selling for $30k. That’s a lot of driving with a good price tag at the end of it. Hilux, expensive, boring small side of the engines, old tech, reliable.... DPF..... maybe. Potential top five. Holden. Nope! Not even a calais, commodore any HSV, (z71 is meant to be a v8). Holden Failed, past their date etc etc. Navara, well it’s in my top three, numero uno if it had better suspension a 3 litre Nissan engine (think v9x) and was a little bit longer and wider, it would be my pick, hence the raptor mentioned above, also doesn’t have the best wading depth 600mm in comparison to 800 bt and ranger, and soon 900 for Land Rover, (albeit a European wagon) but still impressive like the price! Mitso? well I almost bought one based on price, was curious to know how ARB was going to do their bull bar too (thought I’d hold off), it looks good as it is stock but not really an off-roader with that face. CUSTOMER SERVICE? probably the best, at the moment and that is worth at the very least 90% of purchase IMO. Small engine, 6sp auto and manual not bad but small, expensive to service, 500mm wading depth ahh what!! Not sure I want to take it through a puddle let alone somewhere remote. LDV? could be the best thing since sliced bread if it’s reliable and stays that way, customer service, not as good as Mazda or Mitso. Don’t fully trust it in remote places, let’s give it about 10 years ay. Maybe you could just buy a cheap reliable engine/ parts off the shelf in a remote place one day, wouldn’t that be sweet! Isuzu, another brand that could mop the floor clean if their price was about 7-10k cheaper, more comfortable, and less boring so let’s keep moving ay. Mahindra, Great Wall Ssanyong, obocould be better! Don’t always want to buy Chinese/Indian crap, we have enough of it. So from memory this leaves ford and Mazda. Ford! nice looking vehicles for sure, has some tech, cool but not necessary, new 2litre bi turbo is impressive but needs a tune for overtaking, not sure if I’d want to tow a caravan. range topping Wildtrack, (yes I know raptor i’ve placed that in another category) personally I don’t think the wildtrack is worth it, looks the best but you pay out the nose for it! Customer service, not as good as the the others, about 5th on my list, so could be better for price outlayed. Same angles with bt-50, ramp over etc etc. it’s a no for customer service and price for me. Mazda? customer service is great, same 3.2, reliable, cheaper, boring but a safe bet thus far, plenty of mods on the market after not buying a ranger. Its big maybe a little to big and that affects rampover angle, departure angle and approach, view from driver side isn’t the greatest steering is vague, reverse camera in review mirror (pet peeve). Not a lot of tech, simple, cheap reliable almost like a land cruiser, it ticks the most boxes and It’s my pick based on those things mentioned. Ranger raptor, well, I’d say it’s the best, but would be nice with a 3.2L ten speed, and about 10-20k cheaper!
I own a hilux 2.4. its true that it is not very confortable on the road. but i love it when i drive offroad. easy driving.. great video btw
why it's not comfortable on the road? is it bumpy?
@@gutadin5 a bit bumpy compared to Nissan navara. because its not spring coil at the rear.... but if use the car to load something heavy, then hilux is good... its all depends on what purpose u buy the car. for comfort? go for navara or ford. for work? offroad a lot, go for the other... hilux is awesome...
Van Hanz yeah for off road use everyday and carry heavy loads 1-2 tonnes need to use hilux and d-max for commercials and heavy duties...
Hilux was designed for offroad...driving this beast on the road just bonus..💪💪💪
Very details and very nive review about these 6 beast on world. Now time to pick up one of them as my car 😎
The new MR Triton is a weapon and is well deserved 2nd place, it offers the most technology and safety out off all the utes and is the cheapest to purchase. Match this with a very reliable platform, 7 years factory warranty, 3 yrs capped price service and 4 yrs aus wide road side assist and you can see why! Plus its the only ute that allows it to run 4wd on sealed roads, amazing when towing or going through wet slippery hills.
I wouldn’t call it a weapon off road. It’s definitely best for price. But as soon as you add weight and bush conditions, it wouldn’t handle it. I wouldn’t get any of these. Id go for either a vdj79 or an f150 for reliability & pure toughness.
I agree with you. It's honestly the best ute when you add in reliability to all the other stuff. Really really good off-road. I honestly think it is better than the rest with a load on. Cheers.
@@tasmanmcmillan1777 Got three in the family and they all do fine, heck even the army use them too.
@@tasmanmcmillan1777 i disagree mate there really good offroad, the new super select ii system is awesome! I took mine 4wding last weekend and walked the prado, 2 amaroks and ranger i was with. Il try and post the go pro footage soon when i download it 👍👍

Both best
Always wondered how reliability is tested, currently cherishing my 3.2 Wildtrak
This bodes really well for Mitsubishi. The company really needs loyalty down under and the Triton should retain a lot of owners.
Please do a performance review of the new 2020 1.9 and 3.0 isuzu d-max to see if there are any improvements from the previous model. Thanks! More power!
I am curious why with the Holden, that you used the ZR1 model compared to the true offroad ZR2 model?
We don't have a z72 spec in Aus
When testing off road, I do think including features like diff locks (that come standard in some models) would be reasonable
Crafty how was the downhill descent speed in the Triton? Cheers, Dun.
Grouse Dun, hey mate - it held a pretty solid 3-4km/h on our downhills. I did accidentally blip the throttle on one run, so HDC disengaged, but that was my fault. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting, mate. Appreciate it. - Crafty
Love it guys! Keep it coming!
Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed it. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. - Crafty
Fair overview thankyou.
It will always be a HiLux for me. But is there a series of test for the cheaper utes? For the likes of Great Wall, Foton Tunland, LDV, Ssangyong and the Mahindra. They are cheaper and costs half the price of the above utes, but does its job as a work ute.
Wait how much psi is that 2L ranger running? How reliable are they really
Exactly, longevity may be an issue...
Tell us about the reliability Resale Values Most Durable and quality of the engine's periferal part. Let us know the maintenance costs, crash tests... Like everything about getting the best out of each of them for about 5 years usage.
I am thinking about replacing my 2012 Navara with one of these. I was surprised to see how well the Colorado rated. With Holden sales in free fall I might be able to get a good deal.
Good thinking, last April I got myself a bargain price LS 4x4 Colorado and love it
Is the ford in austrailia and new zealand ok with their service?
Mazda Service is great here in NZ with $200 capped servicing on 2 and 4wd utes. Over 3 years only cost $1200 and no vehicle issues in that time , great ute and very capable on and off road even though was not in this lineup.
I choose Mitsubishi Triton because it is the rally Dakar champion very good for long distance cross country heavy duty very good in highway with best handling
Are there any similar reviews on manuals?
New subs here!💪🏽
Good review! Concise and realistic..will be checking the full review..I am eyeing for hilux, ranger or triton..good job!
The new hilux grille reminds me of a late model 80 series Landcruiser front end
If the car has a diff lock standard, why not use it?
Well done boys !!
isuzu dmax is noisy?heavy duty timing chain and timing gear inside the engine, for me only 3 choices, hilux, dmax and triton, reliability and durability.
No Amarok?
I own a 2017 navara. My next truck 4x4 would be hilux, dmax or navara. Any of the three.
Can you do a Inskip test? Apparently heaps of cars get bogged there.
Because people do not lower tyre pressure low enough
Reading the comments I realized that here in south africa we have the exact same level of competitiveness between the different brands. I own a older Triton and I'm glad to see it does really well here, I'm shocked that the Toyota placed so badly because it's supposedly the best thing since sliced bread.
I know you said no bt-50, but I still would’ve included it
I always want to have a nissan, especially a GTR
How about durability?
L200 squad! 🙌
Why would you not use the diff lock to keep it on a level playing field? These come standard, its part of the capability of the ute
Abu7929, no diff locks used in order to test how well they'd all do using just engine, traction control etc. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty
How can you say reliable when the sentence before you make mention of the dpf and no mention of the airbox. There are plenty of videos on KZhead that show the airbox short comings.
Absolutely brilliant review thank you - For ONCE someone has done a comparison with similar spec utes and not thrown in a V6....! Great stuff guys, cant argue with the result, the Ranger is a worldwide success for a reason and that was reflected here; Hilux is outdated older tech living on past loyalty but cant match the newer utes. The Triton coming second was not surprising either because its a great all round package - again great review very enjoyable
D-MAX no doubt
In my country 7 years or 160.000k warranty ....and they managed to get 8l/100km out of it !!! ALSO , NEVER SEEN ANYONE here using Ford Ranger in off road.. mitshu , toyota...

Ultimate Pickup Pick Up Guide
Esay option, will get ranger wildtrak or triton gls premium. Not ranger xlt, if you want to get working ute still got heaps option. For the balance between work and play. Wildtrak can do better job.
I tested a Navara, Triton, Hilux and BT50 when I bought a new ute last year and ended up with the BT50 XT for the ride quality, diff lock, Apple car play and reverse camera and it's where my 6'4 frame fit the best. Also, the 40K and a smidge drive-away price was including the first 3 services, for me, great value. Now a year later, and firmly in the for-what-it's-worth category, I can state my only complaints are the slightly higher than expected fuel consumption and VERY slow to kick-down auto gear box that's way more meh meh than zoom zoom. On the plus side, with a set only a set of AT's as modifications, it's going great through the high country and remains very quiet on the road and handles better on rough country roads than I expected being a ute. Thanks for the video.
David Anderson , that’s why I bought a manual transmission far more enjoyable to drive , and what’s better is the fuel economy one gets from the manual ! The Bt50 is a great ute in its own right , a true all rounder, I came to the same conclusion when looking for a new ute as well .
Ford ranger raptor is the best I own one
Over the years I’ve owned a BT50 and a HILux, back in January I bought an MY19 BiTurbo Ranger Wildtrak and I have to say it the most comfortable, powerful and economical 4WD Ute I’ve owned. Yes it’s more expensive than the rest but after owning it for 9 months it’s definitely worth the extra bit of financial pain.
You should have bought the Ford Raptor! So fun to drive, get all your money's worth. Black is the best color like mine.
Ye but the raptor is more for play and the ranger is more for work so it depends on your needs and FINANCIAL PAIN !!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice ute you have...
@@beaviccoon470 for play and work. That is why its fun!
I ended up with the same. I was looking at a new ute this year and tested the BT-50, Hilux Conquest, Nissan Navara, and Ranger Wiltrak. Ranger was by far the most pleasurable to drive with the Hilux the absolute worst in ride quality.
Amarok V6??????
I would go the dmax out of any of these utes.. The price is an absolute steal and seeing Graham on Australian 4WD Action tour capeyork and glasshouse mountains on 31s and a basic lift kit well it has me sold!!!
Fair call, mate, the D-Max is a good unit, but I'm pretty sure the D-Max they run in those vids is not standard - as in, I reckon it has diff locks. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty
For a 5 year off road use, which car would you recomend?
Isuzu D - Max
Done it and Ford ranger is hard to beat for reliability.
@@colincameron6263 lol
avoided using diff locks.... so the off-road test was a waste of time. why are journalists so stupid?
Idiots
Before buying my Hilux i actually did a test-drive on every ute listed here (plus the BT50) to help me decide what to buy, and i agree with alost everything that's been said. However, i still bought the Hilux because it feels the most appropriate with my profession as a Construction Contractor other than that fact, i would have bought the BT50 or the Ranger no questions asked. #NoRegrets P.S. Here in the Philippines FORD dealer service sucks.
I agree -- one has to choose such a truck based in its optimized utility & functionality. In my case, I will also definitely chose Hilux based on what I've stated above. As someone who works in the farm & uses a vehicle multi-purposely, I find the Hilux to be the most optimized esp. for my need & driving skills, too. It may not have the highest HP or what but, hey, it does deliver! Amazingly so, applying some hypermiling techniques, I was able to push fuel economy ranging from 14 to 16 km/L diesel. And I find driving with 20 cavs (about a ton) of animal feeds at the back even on a dirt road to be not hard for the vehicle to do. So yes, in choosing which ute to buy, one must always consider its optimized utility & functionality. It will definitely deliver cost efficiency esp. if used in business. Greetings from the Philippines!
Wow, ako rin hilux ako
Hilux💪
you guys are really cool.Thumbs up Mate.
Very nice comparison
In my Mauritius Island Ranger and Hilux are the dominator. Both perform well and have good reputation but Hilux is considered to be more reliable. In fact, Toyota is the most advanced showroom here due to it’s custom website to buy parts and free delivery and also have another showroom just for parts and incredible services. In 2020, toyota sold more vehicles than other brand in Mauritius and we even have a page on Facebook where every Hilux owner post their pickup photos and share their experiences. That’s truly blissfulness.
At the start you chose the utes based on similar price, you compared on and off road, I think you should have rated the interior (and exterior) for bang for buck as well. I guarantee the Navara would have come out on top. The Ntrek is the equivalent of the ford wildtrack and has the most car like interior of the bunch.
Toyota land Cruiser 79 series heavy-duty test-drive?
You said hilux was reliable a few times in the hilux segment, i'm not sure if your aware of how bad the DPF issue is. dive deeper into that issue and tell me its still reliable.
Reliable in terms of 4WD capability. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty
Isuzu the best (lower) running costs and most robust and reliable engines and fuel consumption
Yes
True
Also Mercedes x-Class x350d 4matic is missing
And what about Ford's transmission problems and overall reliability issues?
Stoked to see the triton do so well and I probably agree with the outcome overall. However, testing to see the best off road but then saying you avoided using the diff lock on cars that had one to level the playing field is a bit like saying, we raced these 3 cars to see which would be the fastest but made the Ferrari and lambo stay in 1st gear to give the corolla a chance. You've got it, you paid for it, use it!
Jack Freeman, the Triton is a bit of a quiet achiever and packs a lot of stuff for a budget-friendly price. As for not using the diff locks: it was to test how well they'd all do using just engine, traction control etc. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty
@@carsguide Yes it's good to know how they fair without the diff locks as well as it's good to know how well they perform with them.
@@Malc664 Fair point. But those with diff locks (when engaged) are obviously able to tackle harder terrain than those without diff locks, that's a given - hence the "level playing field" scenario in this test. Thanks again. - Crafty
Those with active brake limited slip as standard gives pretty much same result as diff lock. So can't see why not use diff lock where that is the system of choice in the vehicle
Being only automatic transmission tested, I would agree with most you said, only will say, I have driven a ford, and the ride and suspension is from 1990 too damn hard and uncomfortable. Hands down, toyota will win offroad, as the ute is built for offroad (P.S. the DPF issue is and has been fixed. Most other diesel utes have a light to show the drive to run the ute 30km up a motorway and back). Just one request. Can all you guys be real men and test drive these ute in MANUAL transmission...
I agree with you regarding manual transmission review of the utes. All of them only test using automatic transmission. Which is rather odd 🤔
basically im driving on road I choose Navara because of the comfort ride , Wish they had an electronic STEERING
I test drove an N-Trek last weekend. I really liked it overall but that steering wheel is a shocker - it's like a man that carries a handbag.
Why not testing 7 dual cabs?

Good review (I'm talking about the full written review on the website). I'm really surprised that the Triton, even though being the cheapest, has 90% of the safety features as standard, is the cheapest to run and is the only one with 7 years limited guarantee + its off-road capabilities... Was looking to buy a Ute this year and test drove a bunch of the ones tested here. By God, the Hilux (Conquest) was horrendous to drive. Suspension just shakes you dizzy. Infotainment system is so outdated. The seats in the rear were uncomfortable due to poor contour design. Engine and gearbox did not belong in this decade. Out of the ones tested, I was most surprised with the Navara's refinement especially with the suspension. 2.5l Engine was smooth too despite being a bit older. Shame the coilovers did not translate well when the tub is loaded though. Ended up with a Bi-Turbo Ranger Wildtrak.

You shouldn't bemoan people asking about the Amarok. What's the point of comparing only the most popular models?.. They're already being sold. Why not compare the less purchased (less known or understood) models? Throw in the Amarok (which is known the be one of the better performers) or an LDV (which is $20k cheaper than most of these models) or something.
