Hello timeBomb enthusiasts, today we’re venturing into the heart of Utah to explore the grandeur and the unfolding crisis of the Great Salt Lake. This majestic saltwater haven is not only a sanctuary for unique wildlife but a cornerstone of Utah’s economy. Yet, beneath the serene surface, a storm is brewing. The retreating waters are revealing a toxic underbelly, hidden in the lakebed now laid bare.
In this episode, we're diving deep into the root causes behind the disquieting shrinkage of the lake. From the diversion and overuse of its tributary waters to the unsung adversities of climate change, we're unraveling the complex tapestry of challenges the lake faces.
As we traverse this narrative, we'll journey back in time to Lake Bonneville, the grand precursor to the Great Salt Lake, offering a ghostly reflection of what might become of its descendent. The historical lens paints a stark picture and a cautionary tale of nature’s grand cycles.
The dilemma is clear-cut: address the dwindling water levels of the Great Salt Lake or brace for a dusty, toxic reality. We invite you to share your perspectives in the comments below, contributing to a meaningful dialogue on this pressing environmental saga.

  • Cities and towns in Utah were requiring houses have green grass in the strip by the sidewalk not long ago unless they’re changed recently.

  • Synthetic polymer emulsion can be applied to keep the dust down. Thanks for all the great work, Time Bomb!

  • Pipe ocean water to salt lake and Salton sea. Run it until full. Then start RO units. We can pump oil across the continent, we can pump salt water to prevent this too and help with other issues

  • We need the lake to create our snowpack during the winter. Without water in the lake, we will not have mega snow storms that give us clean water and any snow for the tourist ski industries. Let's face it; the Wasatch Front has overbuilt for the amount of water we had. Maybe a solution would be to cap it like mine tailings left over from refining.

  • Wondering if treated waste water from Saltlake city and other municipal facilities are pumped into the lake? I agree the shrinking of the lake and the resulting dust is natural and difficult to impossible to control.

  • The cities & counties that surround the GLS have got to enact more regulations & restrictions to decrease the amount of water being diverted if they want to stop the shrinkage, and improve the water recycling rates... maybe a moratorium on new growth until they achieve a certain percentage always going back to the lake. Definitely enact housing restrictions on new builds. And maybe check to see if the water used by agriculture is worth that expenditure. i.e.: Is the water that could go into the lake being used on crops that stay local - thus staying in the regional ecosystem & part of the recycling loop - or is it being shipped off to other locations that aren't struggling to conserve water? The water authority there should get with the SNWD people to see what can be done. The water recycled from LV & surrounding area is close to 98%.

  • There was discussion of bringing Pacific Ocean water to the Great Salt Lake. Seems really smsrt and offers the possibility of desalination fresh water far inland.

    • How much could be brought? It probably couldn’t be enough at any reasonable cost to make much difference. And how? By train?

    • @@karld1791 I think by pipelines. The Colorado River is small and has a huge impact. I canal the size of the Arizona Project I bet could do a lot. I think Utah thinks too small and too backwards.

  • We are aware of how salt lakes form? You know, that salt is accumulated by evaporating (i.e., disappearing) water?

    @Somewhere-In-AZ@Somewhere-In-AZ7 ай бұрын
    • Great Salt Lake does not supply municipal water. Water for cities such as Salt Lake City comes from streams and reservoirs in the Wasatch Mountain Range and from deep wells throughout the Salt Lake Valley.

    • The great salt lake is not a municipal water source. Even if it wasn't polluted, it's far too salty to be potable. The rivers that flow into the great salt lake are used as municipal and agricultural water sources, decreasing the amount of water flowing into the great salt lake.
