We also made sure the bees had plenty of water. If you have a bird bath in your garden then make sure to top it up in the heat. #waterforwildlife

Maddie Moate ppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp
Lighting the smoker with your hood up risks sparks from the smoker burning holes through the hood.
Thanks Maddie and Mum Love watching your bee keeping videos My first year of bee keeping in France Keep those videos coming
OMG the lady just care so much for the bees, that's so lovely
How to bee a Beekeeper #2. Hope you're enjoying these "Discovery Vlogs". I filmed my next one yesterday and it's slightly ridiculous!
Disclaimer: My mum and I have been keeping bees for 3 years, are both well read and have completed beekeeping courses, but we are by no means experts. We are "hobbyist" beekeepers and try not to interfere with the bees too much. We welcome any advice and tips from fellow beekeepers and always recommend getting a second opinion as our knowledge is limited :-)
I think your bee vlog is wonderful! as a new beekeeper it is incredibly informative in a nonstuffy easy to watch way! Thanks!
Yay! We have wild bees living in the ground below an apple tree in my back garden. It's quite nice a the kids to sit in the garden and watch the little fellas come n go :)
Thats awesome!
I really enjoyed this Video!
I love this! I'm really interested in these kinds of things. Learning someting new every day :-)
Keep up with the beekeeping vlogs! I love them,,,,new to bees and learning things on youtube is wonderful!
love them! keep'em coming! XD
Brilliant! Always wanted to know more about bee keeping. Keep them coming!!
Cute baby maddie lol.
Really interesting I am from Spain and I find very interesting comparing Beekeeping in the UK and Spain I love the fact that you use a sustainable method
keep any questions coming in!
Loved this Maddie! One quick question. How did the bees know that the new skep was available? Did putting the old honey in there entice them? Or are they clever enough to see a new skep and move from the tree?
Joel and Lia Hi guys! loves your vlogs by the way! We actually cut off the branch of tree they had swarmed too, brought it over to the skep and tapped them in! the honey in there keeps them from moving off again.
Maddie Moate Thank you! That's so interesting! I'd love to keep bees, looks like so much fun! Joel
these are brilliant ^_^ i'm learning so so much
They have found heater bees that can heat themselves to 44° and will use that heat to increase the temperature of the hive and surrounding cells during winter.
Awesome vlog maddie!. i ones had a swarm of bees trying to make a hive on my front door. now i kinda wish i had kept them, so i could have become a beekeeper my self :)
Respectfully, at 7:30, there is way too much spacing between the frames. You could have probably added another 3 frames to this hive. Having that much spacing encourages messy drawn (clumpy) frames and makes honey extraction much more of a chore - not to mention hive inspections :) Loving the vids you guys are doing awesome and looking forwards to seeing more.
Its using castellated runners, the spacing is not adjustable.
Love your videos!
My second grade class really likes your videos and they love watching your bee vlogs! They would like it if you did some new bee videos!
Perhaps incorporating clover into the lawn will help. Trifolium is a great source of nectar and also conditions the soil.
I'll put forward the idea. We are cultivating a meadow area at the moment to try and encourage the bees and butterflies, so i'll check we've got clover on the list!
Maddie please keep making these bees vidoes do a video about looking were the queen bee lives and see the baby bees
I love 🐝 bees
Love to see more like this
yes please! I love your videos.
I find your vids quite entertaining . What type of hives are those that your using ? I like the outer box for temperture control and protection from the elements
Adorable
y'all should invest in the flow hive, it would make extracting your honey so much easier and faster
Not usually a fan of bees but I found this fascinating! I do have a question though, when breeding your own bees, does the weather effect the quality of honey? Humidity/heat/rain etc! Keep up with the videos they're great :)
Very informative video! 👍❤
I would love to see heaps of these discovery vlogs. Thanks Madz Also quick question, does your Mum have any issues with beetles invading the hives? and if so What does she do to control them?. I know thats a common problem with bee keeping here in Australia
Wow 😲😲
Very well done
I'm not English, but it seems to me that you should be a narrator in the BBC documentary.
Wow, your mom is a great teacher! :-) How did you get into the whole bee-thing? Was it simply out of interest?
only 802 views! I was expecting 100k+. Found ya' through youtube nation, very entertaining blog +1 subscriber.
I am thrilled 😎
seriously, you are so cute! Come to the states and help me set up my first hives!! =)
The queens and everybody's chambers is the most bottom and the cash is on the top ones?
Your mom is very calm and composed, seems to be very fine lady
So yeh brood bock is where the queen lays her eggs. What if the queen decides to move from it and lay eggs in the honey frames.
Can I request a bee vlog#3 ? This is very interesting
Yep, we should have two more coming before the autumn.
Maddie is Sweet as Honey

I've got really bad hayfeever
Hey, I saw from Hatfilms' channel that you were a judge at the Junior Gaming BAFTAs, any chance of a vlog saying more about what went on there? (If there is intact anything interesting at all to say!) Great video as always :)
Hey Dan, thats awesome, thanks for the heads up. I'll head over to their channel and check it out. I'll chat about it in my "Things I learnt in July" video :-)
Maddie Moate I'm not sure they were the ones who filmed it, I think they liked a video from BAFTA YGD channel, watch?v=G1yERP7IBdw&list=LLUxoapwoGN9cKN5SPKGVh7A that should be the link :)
😙😙😙😙😙Beeeee
Have you heard of bee adoption? We're looking at it for our garden :D if a hive is found, say in someone's home and they don't want it it can be relocated nearby to someone who does want it! :D
No I hadn't. great idea! As long as they go to people who know what they're doing :-s
Yeahh, we wanted one for the allotment :)
Superr..
When I was a kid, there came a swarm of bees to my house and they made a hive in the roof tiles (i don't know how). After a time we were invaded by bees and my parents called the firefighters. They destroyed the hive and killed the bees by blasting it with soapy water from the hose, and all the honey was wasted. :'(
More bee now
So If I want to do this, what is the best advice to get started?
David Stacey best way to start is to go to your local bee association and take a few classes.
Watch videos with experienced beekeepers. These seem to be novices with not much idea what they're doing.
what do bees do to keep beeing busy in nature? do they just extend the hive?
they swarm. essentially they make a new queen. she flyes away to find a new place to make a hive, and in the process she take half the original hive with her :)
Yep, they would keep it extending it or as Ricki says, they would swarm. When your keeping bees you want to keep in the same place and stop them from swarming, hence why you manage the hives to keep them happy where they are.
What will happen if you got the queen bee
Dose the bee make the Comb
if you use sugar sprey on honey bees rather the smoke
2:02 Rape seed pollen? :O I'd be afraid to go near that flower... xD
If you're from the US, then you'd know it as Canola : )
Arleen Brereton
Why don't you just use this honey for comb honey?
i thought the CO2 made them drowsy.
Anymore videos coming?
absolutely, we will be opening up the hives at the end of august and wrapping them up for winter shortly after, so expect two more coming soonish.
Brilliant, look forward to watching!
"ball ache"?! So glad I let my 5 year old daughter watch this. I assumed it was suitable for young children, what with the baby talk and all...
+Karen Burgess Thanks for pointing this out, the video was made a few years ago before my audience became significantly younger. I'm going to unlist the video till I have time to go through my video library and put warnings on any videos which may have inappropriate language.
+Karen Burgess How does your 5 year old daughter understand the meaning of "ball ache"?
BillyCBoxingFan where did I say she understood it? Its not too difficult to understand a child would understand the implication of the term and repeat it. And in case you don't understand that it's not desirable language from a 5 year old, it's not.
you had a haircut?
Nope, just tied it up. Maybe it looks shorter?
smoke harm honey bees
Tell your mom to speak louder, we can barely hear what she is saying.
Yay
Maddie, I just realized that you use cardboard in your smoker. Cardboard uses a thin line of glue between the corrugated layers. Please, please dont use cardboard! You gas your bees every time that you smoke them!
jonny Smith they get theirs from Thornes Bee Supplies in the UK. It's readily available and contains no glue. I find the smoke a bit too hot from paper/cardboard. Dry grass or pine needles(if available) is the best - maybe. It last far longer than cardboard and it's FREE😉
My dream is to have .... subscribers 😋
