59 and 54 no matchy
The toggle is locked to the rear thus obscuring the 54. If you look at the first picture of the serial number under the barrel you'll see the whole serial number is 5954. When you draw the toggle back and lock it, the 54 is obscured by the side plate. So yes, the numbers are matchy. :)

Yes, me too. But I have my hands on one about 20 years agoo. I was weapons safety controller on a competition. An older gentleman took one out of its case. He asked after my check, if I may give it back to him, twice! I hesitated, but had too. All was very keen on to look at it and handle it. This guy was a proud owner of this gun. I should have run with it🤣.

check out Ruger Mark IV Standard.. they look VERY similar as Luger and only for 300 buxs..
When I was 8yrs old we visited my uncle near Merced, CA and he was out in his backyard workshop working on his WW2 Luger. I watched him take apart a magazine, set the spring down on a thin, flat piece of metal and mark the length with a scribe. The I watched him measure 1.25" longer and drill a couple holes and screw in a pair of small hooks, then he stretched out the spring and hooked it onto the hooks, heated it with a torch until it glowed red, then he dropped it into a bucket of oil. He told me this was to ''Refresh the spring tension''. I was 8, what did I know - lol but I remember watching him with peaked interest. He was my favorite uncle and I loved to visit him, he was always doing some interesting project, circa 1965.

As Ian McCollum said in one of his videos, Georg Luger got so many things just right on his revision of the Borchardt pistol. There's no big evolutionary chain between the Borchardt and the Luger. Kinda jumped from one to the other, then got small tweaks to the final versions. Also keep in mind that the reason the P-38 was developed was due more to the cost of the Luger, rather than it becoming obsolescent.
Cost AND time to manufacture. P38s were a lot faster to turd out as well.

And the P-38 isn't even a bad gun, the Luger is just *that* good.
Was told that the rear sight cants to the left as the sight is adjusted up. This counteracted the right hand spin of the rifling at that distance. Very well made gun, a work of art.

LOVE YOUR VIDEO, I FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT LUGERS AS YOU DO. I first got to shoot a P08 back in 1964 when I was 12, it belonged to my older brother who was 16 at the time. Dad was a WW2 VETERAN of 9 Campaigns in the Atlantic Theater (8/41-8/45). I have a standard 4" army model, years ago I had 3 of them at same time (1915 DWM bring back, matching, 1940 S/42 Russian capture matching except grips and mag, original Mauser commercial made in 1960's on Swiss tooling. I had to sell them when in 2008 I was laid off with 19 years service with a FILM PHOTOGRAPHY company (TECHNOLOGY change). LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. Thinking of buying a complete upper assembly for a Artillery Luger, it's almost $1800 which is a little Pricey but I'm 71 and LOVE LUGERS and the Artillery one is the Ultimate Luger to have especially if you LOVE shooting Lugers and being a ACCURACY FREAK like the Swiss who were the FIRST COUNTRY TO ADOPT THE LUGER IN 1900 BUT IN 30 caliber Luger, 9mm hadn't been developed yet. It came out in 1902. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK 😉😃😄😃😄

As a native German I appreciate that many US guys like the Luger pistols. US and German arms, invented and made, are high quality guns and still working well even decades after those were made. I collect German and classic US small arms and got rid of all guns not made in the USA and Germany after 1945.. Greetings from Germany.....

Excellent Classic Handgun review! No problems here with Mec-Gar Magazines in my standard 1936 S/42 Mauser made Luger. I've found standard pressure 124 grn FMJ reloads made with Alliant Green Dot Powder very nicely simulate actual 9mm WWI and WWII loadings and function perfectly. Missed out on buying a 6 inch Navy Luger, but maybe someday I'll get one of those.
The Luger simply fits super comfortably in my hand, great ergonomic for something made over 80 years ago. Oh besides that, I really like your shirt.

Another amazing thing about the Luger/P.08 is unlike almost any other military sidearm from 1908 and earlier you can walk in just about anywhere that sells ammo and find something that works in it! Georg Luger not only made the Luger, he created the 9mmx19 cartridge for the P.08! The Luger fires the most common pistol ammunition in the world. I have two P.08s, a pristine, all matching, almost unfired 1941 byf (Mauser) and a FrankenLuger built with parts from 15 pistols. Of the major parts, the frame and toggle assembly are about 1913-14 DWM and the upper receiver and barrel are from a 1938 S/42 Mauser. As a starving student I bought "Frankie" in 1975, the cheapest, ugliest Luger in Phoenix, Az, but the darn thing functioned reliably when I took it out in the desert. What a joy it's been all these years and it still functions well today, using Mec-Gar mags and even Federal Champion valuepack (probably because I never changed the springs). After many thousands of rounds only one part broke over the decades, the big axle pin at the back of the toggle, an easy fix. This pistol continued to fire reliably with the pin snapped in two in the middle since the pin is captured and can't come out. I was impressed, you can't kill these things! I have never fired the byf which I bought in 1999 but think it's time now. It really looks brand new, I think it was kept in a drawer most of its life.

I really like the down-the-sights camera angles like at 5:58 ... It helps to get a feel for how the gun is to actually fire, and get a feel for the recoil impulse, too. Besides, an otherwise awesome gun with a wonky sight picture makes for some surprisingly bad practical accuracy, so it can be helpful in any buying decisions.

Man I know someone with that same setup on an FN pre ww2 Hi-Power. Stock has a holster and mag pouches fastened to it. Makes a nice 9mm carbine...especially with 32 round mags!

Everyone talks about modern guns. I keep promising myself I will do more on the historic guns in my collection. While everyone else is singing the praises of the Gen 5 Glock, I would rather talk about something interesting (at least to me anyway). :D

Very enjoyable video about the fascinating Luger. I'm lucky enough to have one. Clean, oiled, and with the high velocity 9mm for which it was designed, my Luger is both reliable and accurate. Nice reminder to join the NRA too. At the moment, an annual membership is just $45, so I purchased several for friends, and of course for my kids too.

I have a four and the artillery Luger. Wish you could have covered the articulated rear sight. It shifts to the left to compensate for barrel twist.

Based on your previous video of the SR1911 Tim, have you ever considered a Dawson Precision 1911 guide rod? I use one in my SA TRP Operator, and I don't ever have to use a paperclip ever again to disassemble my 1911. They are designed to use with 1911s with the bushingless bull barrels (except that annoying stiff plunger on the slide stop).

Tim, last weekend I had a chance to shoot a Kel-Tec 9mm carbine suppressed. I was surprised by how much recoil it had. I was also surprised by how loud it was, about like a loud hand clap. It did NOT go"pew pew", it went 'bang" but much softer.

I'm sure you're right, I didn't see the box so I don't know what i was shooting. whatever it was, I thought it was WAY cool. I hope to have a chance to do it again. Seeing you shoot with a suppressor on you tube and doing for real are entirely different things. It's impossible to appreciate until you've done it yourself.

I used to have a standard Luger, which I sold years ago when I needed a bit of money for something else. I rather regret selling it now. The one I'd really like to get is the navy version, with the 6 inch barrel and the two-position rear sight, but it's hard to find good ones of that type for less than $4-5K.

Like it or not, .40 is not dropping in popularity. 9mm is more popular, but .40 is still a very popular round.
Most fans of velocity are gonna go over to 357sig thing they wanna spend the cash, and don't wanna go 10mm. 357sig just has more lightweight boolits.
Yeah I like the .357 sig pretty good, but I'm a big 10mm fan. It's definitely my favorite pistol round. It does have problems with over penetration, but this can be easily solved with high velocity lighter weight bullets (in the 130-140 grain range). The biggest thing 9mm has going for it is price.
