Even within the population of Swedish speaking Finns (200 000 people) there are some big cultural differences! And most towns (populations of 200 - 10 000 or so) have their own unique dialect of Swedish that almost makes it a whole different language. During yestesyears sauna was where you where born, cleaned, healed (preferably with tar and booze), and final rited'eded. Sauna is strongly linked to folk lore and religion and therefor even considered as a sacred place.

    @iiyz@iiyz5 жыл бұрын
    • Thats why the architecture is post soviet influenced

      @joelpekkola4281@joelpekkola42815 жыл бұрын
    • How can it be post-soviet if it was never Soviet in the first place? I'm also not sure what you mean by "post Soviet influenced", Since the architecture that is often ridiculed as looking "Soviet" (Plattenbau, brutalism, functionalism) became a trend in Western Europe in 1950's-1970's when Soviet union was still very much alive.

      @iiyz@iiyz5 жыл бұрын
    • Finland did get its independence from Lenin and the soviets.

      @aarnikoivisto5415@aarnikoivisto54155 жыл бұрын
    • Soviet Union was born in 1922, Finland declared independence in 1917. Lenin who later became the leader of Soviet union did accept the declaration few months later, but he obviously didn't use a time machine. The last Russian ruler of Finland still was Czar Nikolai II. Imperial Russian army was still in Finland at the time of independence and even in Russia, their socialist constitution wasn't ready until the next year, when Finland had already left. And of course "soviet" in Russian just means a council, which has been used for at least over a hundred years before 1922, and still is in today's Russia, but "the Soviets" in English commonly refers to Soviet Union.

      @iiyz@iiyz5 жыл бұрын
    • Thats correct, but the russian soviet federation (not the same as ussr) was formed in the october revolution of 1917. So you could say Finland was part of them for a couple of months before they recognized us on 31.12. Also Imperial Russia died already in the february revolution when the russian republic was formed, which Finland was officially part of. On the ruler I'd generally agree, but one could argue it would be the russian Duma (Kerensky) or the general assembly (Lenin). In the end the fact is our independence was not gained from the Tsar or Imperial Russia, although the situation at the time was a bit messy to say the least.

  • Honestly i think the finnish _summer_ is one of the most beautiful things u can see, no matter if they all endorse the winter and "nightless nights." While in the summer the sun in southern parts _does_ go below the horizon but only for a few degrees and so usually the temperature in the few warmest months is okay throughout the nights and u could basically spend as much time outdoors as you feel like it. Another thing is the finnish mentality which is pretty much that every single bar terrace is filled and every park has people in them enjoying the usually warm & sunny July-June period, and it is nationwide built into the culture that most people from worker to businessman keep their yearly holidays at that time too. It's like everything in this country is built for that time period. :) Summer in Finland with its thousands of lakes, probably millions of summer cottages, and the most beautiful nature I've ever seen is a sight to behold.
