ps. Remember, life's better when you make stuff!
What are your two must have lenses for filming?
I've gotten some great responses on instagram and twitter so I thought I would ask here as well.
@@Levi_Allen My 2 are 35mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 but more of a Hybrid Shooter .
The 35mm is a really lovely lens
Currently using the Sigma 24-70 dg dn 2.8 but I’m strongly considering selling it for the 24-105 you showcased here. I would use primes for interviews and I often find myself wanting more reach.
Right now we are transitioning from the Sigma 14-24, Sony 35 1.8 and Zeiss 50 1.4 to 14GM, 35GM and 50GM. We absolutely adore using our 135GM. The 70-200GM hardly sees any use since we got it. 24GM is another favourite. The 85GM has a very nice image, but we will exchange it as soon as Sony makes a refresh. For macro we use the 90 and 24 Probe and for super long shots we also love the 200-600G. In the past we had the Tamrons 17-28 and 28-75 and the Samyang 85 1.4. Loved all three of them. But with the new class of primes Sony has been pushing out we are just gushing at the performance.
I love how you cover the interaction of the gear with the realities of adventure life. The combination definitely makes this channel much more interesting.
24-105 is such an underrated focal length.
I was picturing “what would Jesse say” about each one of my different choices 😂
Lens what live on my camera 90% of the time 😊
Hello Jesse!
lol
I just got a RF 24-105mm. I can't believe how versatile those focal lengths are. I never thought I'd be saying that. this is coming for a person who LOVES prime lenses. #greatvideo
Thanks and perfect timing. We’re upgrading some of our lenses and you totally answered some of my questions. Great stuff as always. 🤙🏼
I’d love to hear about what you end up choosing!
Would have thought you are too busy with the boat to thing about that. Good luck
Dude this whole video felt more like a professional documentary. Looking forward to seeing more reviews like this from you. Awesome work.
Watching Levi traveling around in his van is making me reevaluate my life choices
Levi, I’d love to see your colour grading process - your video work looks truly fantastic: gorgeous colours, low contrast with that matte look, I love it.
I’ve never seen any of your videos until this one and I have to say this is by far the best real world lens reviews I’ve ever seen. Your content is just quality man. Subscribed for sure!
I appreciate your approach which involves getting maximum versatility in as small and light a package as possible. A 24-105 with a fast 50 and 85 takes care of most photographic and video situations.
This is seriously some of the best most practical help I have ever found in a video. Subscribed. Thank you!
I just bought a light from Lume Cube because of you! I expect 24/7 customer support directly from you if I have any issues since you recommended it 😜, it does actually look super handy
As long as I’m in cell service you can call anytime 😁
Fantastic video Levi! I’ve just started getting into video and this was a huge help. I really appreciate the way you broke down the lens options and what you would recommend for your style of work. Awesome job!! 🙌
The 24-105 and 20mm 1.8 combo looks amazing. I've been wanting a 16-35 for awhile now but that 20mm just absolutely destroys both of Sony's zooms in terms of image quality, price, and size. Gonna be my next piece of kit for sure! Great video, I really appreciate all of the sample footage with each lens.
Agree. Had many shoots with both the G master 24-70 + 70-200 and the 70 -105. and I liked the extra mm's on the 24-105 a lot. And if the area is a dark place to shoot, I simply charge €200,- extra for the shoot to rent the G master lenses
I am not actualy looking for a lens or anything like that, I just love to watch your videos. I'm not a filmmaker, but I really like learning more about it. thank you for always making such interessting and well explained videos.
Fantastic video Levi! Love this style of review video and so happy to see you putting more content out there! It’s truly unique
Thanks for this! It’s great to see the recommendations from a real filmmaker. This had a lot more substance and experience behind it than most “gear reviews”
Really helpful advice on how to balance the pros and cons thank you!
The 24-105 f4 is one of my favorite lenses for the Sony system - especially for video. It's so versatile.
this was SO helpful! i've been searching around for an upgrade from my sony zvi and decided on the sony a7iv, but had no idea what lens to get. this provided so much clarity thank you
Brilliant! More photo and video content like this is greatly needed and appreciated on KZhead. User experience and reverse engineer your proverbial toolbox. And another brilliant point you make is sometimes you just have to do your best and try it and see how it works. Buying a piece of equipment you don’t need sometimes it’s necessary to come to the conclusion
Bro, this was such a good video! so much experience and footage put into this.
I was really going back and forth about the sony 20mm 1.8 and the Tamron 17-28 2.8. I went with the Sony 20mm and have been loving it for its small size, fast aperture, and wide focal length! Also, have the 24-105 and has been a fantastic all-around lens
Such a great video. Well explained and laid out. Always love your content. Cheers Matt
Wow, what a fantastic video, awesome work Levi! I loved all the example shots.
I'm glad to see someone who knows what they are doing has reassured me of a few lens choices I made (20mm, 24-105mm and 55mm). My next couple of lenses were influenced by the wallet and Jake Sloan (youtube channel), and I went with the Tamron 17-28 and 28-75mm. It seems (more by fluke than judgement) that I have ended up with a pretty good set of lenses!
This was so so helpful! Thank you!!
Very thorough and honest opinion! I really liked how you aren’t going for the brand (and costly) but using the lenses towards your filmmaking style - especially when it comes to packing light. I think a lot of starting out become gear hungry and it’s different when you actually go on a shoot and have to factor in conveniences like handheld shots, internal lens stability, and autofocus capabilities. I’m checking out that van build next! Do you have a recommendation for mic set ups?
Wow! First time stumbling across this channel. Fantastic information and I love what your channel is about. Subscribed and about to do a deep dive!
BRO THIS WAS SO HELPFUL YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH YOU HELPED ME!
Thanks for making this video Levi ! It was perfect timing and helped confirm some kit questions I've been having myself. I was looking to minimize my kit and upgrade to some nicer lenses that have similar diameters for filters. Cause before every lens was a different diameter so I never used filters! My husband and I are going with 24-105s! Kinda a kickback to the 5D Mark 3 kit lens days lol. So the 24-105 & 100-400 with 77mm NDs and CPs. Also using 77mm filters on the 16-35 f4 (72mm diameter) for vlog and landscape photography to avoid vignetting. So a 3 lens kit for daily use! Btw I love my 55 1.8 as an additional lens and have been using it for years for adventure photos and video. PS: I watched your shimoda videos a dozen times the past couple weeks and am stoked to start using those bags as well! Anyways, you Rock! Keep creating videos! ✌️
I love seeing those outdoor shots with a filmic grade on them. I think that it just makes it look so cool
My friend, I was looking for lenses recommendations after getting my new A7IV and I couldn't be more happy finding your video on the topic. I just got my 24-105mm 4.0. and it's exactly what I was looking for for my travels :)
First time checking out your videos and the timing was perfect. Will be getting a few of these lenses. Much appreciated.
Dude, great content thanks for all you do to help other creatives grow with you. Keep up the good work.
Great video Levi. Been considering lenses for similar reasons (packability). And this video absolutely nailed it with a ton of quality
I settled on a Sony full frame because I had a lot of glass that fit my Minolta camera from years gone by. Although almost all of them are manual focus and lack stabilization I make up for it with a device called a tripod. I love you work by the way. I was getting a "Vibe" when you were showing clips of that one wheeler rolling down the streets. I am an ex-Hamiltonian that has lived in cottage country (North of the Muskokas) for a dozen years now. One shot rolled past "Jackson Square" and I knew that you were in the Hammer. That explained the vibe that I was getting.
I can vouch for the 55mm/1.8. I don't use it a lot because of the kind of shots I tend to do, but every time I've used it, when looking back at the photos, they just blow my mind. I can always pick them out of a stack of images. There's just something about the quality of the images compared to other lenses I have. It's hard to describe better than that.
Wow, really? For me I can oick them out because they are beyond horrible. Horrible abboration not even photoshop or lightroom can fix and so blurry. Horrible!
Yessir! The Levi I came for is BACK!🔥 (not saying I don't like the Van stuff, but I came because of you filmmaking✌🏼)
I think you made an admirable case for opening up lens choices. That more expensive is not always better. And that lens design inherently comes with some interesting, and often conflicting, choices. The perfect lens does not exist. And we should remain open to all options. Very nicely done!
I completely agree with you about the 24-105 - especially for shooting outdoors, indoors not so much, not under natural lighting.
I have heard the same thing about these lenses before! It's so helpful to see footage examples as well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience! :)
Just found you, glad I did! ..your flow resonates with me ! Just purchased a A74 and Tamron 35-150 and wow, coming from a A9 over 1 year ago...what a great upgrade for me! I Will be filling the gap with the 20mm you used! TY
thank you so much for this. i've been trying to put together my first video kit, and being able to see examples shot with the lenses is so crucial if you're not banging thru money trying to rent a bunch of stuff. thank you.
Great video, you’re footage looks fantastic. Really impressed with the stabilization and AF on that system.
this was a really well made video! I felt like I was watching a documentary about best lenses! really enjoyed and subbed Levi! thanks for making this!
Thanks for the advice levi!! 24-105 was the first 'serious' lens I got for our video, love it's adaptability!
Excellent ideas. I just love your practical use of lens without going bankrupt and yet get the job done! Thank you for sharing.
I'm with you on the 24-105mm focal Length. If I had one lens I'd choose my 16-80mm for my Fuji X-S10. Changing between primes is easy and great in a controlled environment but for me it's 10X harder while camping or on the trail. It's more trouble then it's worth many times.
Thank you Levi! Starting with my Canon 6D back around 2013 the 24-105 F4 lens has definitely proven as #1 overall lens for full frame video. Just picked up an FX6 and I appreciate the coverage of 20mm F1.8 thanks again! TJ
Your colors are amazing. It's bright and vibrant without looking goofy which is an extremely difficult look for me to get. I'm really impressed. Have you done a "how I color grade" video?
this guys van is the most badass thing I think I've ever seen, this guy knows how to live life
Awesome video! I went with the 24-105 f/4 and the 70-200 f/4 also due to that huge weight difference, as well as the 20 f/1.8 and 85 f/1.8. Really happy with how my setup is working for what I do!
Subbed. I really like your video, thanks, I appreciate the educational stuff and experience. I'd love to hear more about how lenses work and behave, especially in practice.
This was EXTREMELY useful. I am looking to change my entire camera gear setup & i am completely lost and this was SO HELPFUL. Doing god's work, thank you.
I can't believe I'm just seeing this, Levi! Awesome overview. I actually picked up the 24-105 recently after becoming frustrated with the amount of dust I was getting in my Sigma 24-70 and I've been loving it so far.
Thank you thank you! I love the 24-105
Dude! Absolutely loved this video, learned so much. One thing though, have you done a video on your color grading? Your color is just so natural and gorgeous - let me know would love to see your process. You might have just talked me into the 24-105 f4
Came across your channel and I simply love it. Thank you so much for sharing the knowledge . Wanted to know if you could help with the camera stand you are using . I have been looking around but couldnt find a great deal .This one will surely help my purpose
Levi, we did SALTS together, gotta be going back 12 or more years ago now. Super helpful video thanks. I'm happy with the nifty fifty on our a74. I'm going to pick up a 24 105 f4 now thanks to you. Hope you've been doing well. Your content is amazing and so well done
Fantastic overview and samples. Appreciate all of the work that went into this video. Thanks
So helpful and great to see a creator talking about renting. Feels nice to see a more real talk about why and where to put your money than spending till you’re poor. Good job.
I rocked the 18-105 f4 OSS on my a6500 forever. That lens is absolute fire. I really like your content, I'm new here. thank you.
This video by far is the most clear and well presented answer to buying lenses on the Sony System, Thank you for that
Thank you for your review! 👌- this was very helpful for me!
thanks for this man! Upgrading to a full frame and I needed this.
Such a good review and brilliant, thoughtful advice. So glad I stumbled on this 2 years later 😂
Nice video, great info throughout. I'm always trying to lighten my load when out hiking and stuff and I agree with you that the 24-105 f/4 (but Canon) is the best compromise I've found. Great b-roll and style, really makes me homesick for the PNW.
Great video, very helpful - love my FE 1.8/55. I too have the 16-35 f/4 and would probably opt for the Sigma 14-24 f/2.8 if I had it to do over again. As a Sony shooter, I've always carried a Tamron 28-200 as a backup lens for commercial work (my 70-200 hit the floor once and I would've been sunk without a backup). It doesn't necessarily have the cool factor, but it's like the Toyota of lenses: solid performer, very versatile, and pleasantly affordable. It's small (relatively, light and pretty fast, wide open). No stabilization built in but a great minimum focus distance and low chromatic aberration. Love your stuff, keep up the great work. Thanks.
I have watched this so many times. And I really think that if and when I finally move to sony I'd start with the 24-105 and one fast prime. So versatile and I really appreciate you recommending that lens which was off my radar until this video.
The shots in the Chilliwack River Valley (I think) were just so beautiful! Loved the video even though I am on blackmagic haha
Terrific video full of the benefits of practical experience. Exactly what I was looking for. Many thanks. Subscribed
Love the video and cinematography! Thanks for this. Question: When you're shooting with Catalyst Browse / gyro stabilization in mind, what shutter speed are you on? Thanks for any insight, I get a ton of micro jitters
I've been searching for a new lens for my Sony, and this has been the most helpful video I've come across! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Levi, those shots of Jesse on the OneWheel (3:28) shot on the Sony FE 20mm F1.8G, just look so good! Looks like an awesome lens. Thanks for the great info.! 👍👍
DUDE! Totally agree! Very solid kit and I think you helped me narrow down some of my choices! I am currently rocking the GH5S but miss having a full frame and am considering jumping over to Sony and more specifically the A7siii to still have a tool that is easy to use for photography. I have a 24-105 equivalent for my GH5S and I use it 95% of the time. What I’m struggling with right now is if I could have just 2 lenses, which ones? I am doing content creation/travel/client promotional work.
Really good analysis and gorgeous footage to illustrate your points!
Stuck with the kit lens, looking to get a nice set of lenses! Thank you, Levi :D
Thank you so much, bro! best review I've seen. Think I'm going to go with the 24-105 and I'm happy I saw this because I was about to pull the trigger on the Tamron for a lower price. New sub!
New subscriber and A7IV owner here, I'm glad that I found your channel! I'm also coming from the GH5 and Lumix system and I went with Sony due to autofocus for live event situations. I appreciate your recommendations on lenses and commentary. It's looking like the 20mm f1.8 is a must have. Question about gimbals, what do you think is the best bang for the buck for the A7IV with a 20mm?
I LOVE that 55mm 1.8, I use it on gimbals for client work all the time and I may never upgrade to a “better” 50mm
Very helpful, very cool. You're killing it. Good to see
I'm running Canon and I mostly shoot stills. But, i love your content and the real talk of what someone actually needs over wants...
Thanks Levi, this really helped me decide what lenses to get for my new A7iii. So stoked to upgrade from my Nikon D7100. I chose the 20mm 1.8, 50mm Zeis 1.8mm, and 24-105mm F4. Next is to decide on a wildlife/zoom lens, for our sailing trip to Alaska/Mexico.
This was incredibly helpful, my guy. thank you!!
Great Video! Loved all the Chilliwack area footage.
Great video and think you for sharing and posting. Much appreciated. Do you have another video that describes your Picture Profiles used for video. And also explains your color grading process, including any use of LUTs, etc. Your video has a beautiful cinematic quality.
The content of this channel is so organic I will definitely subscribe your channel
I have that 24-105 lens and it is super good. It sits on my camera 90% of a time although I have few primes in my arsenal. Great video, thank you 🙌
Love this real talk. I love my 24-105. When we're in a rushed shooting situation, it's my go to. You can't beat it's versatility 💯 will def check out the 20mm 👍
Love the tech stuff, thanks for the honest reviews
Love this video! Could you do one on your editing to Catalyst to coloring workflow?? I'm so interested in Catalyst but have no idea what the workflow needs to be for optimal quality!
Thank you so much for this!!! I'm moving to sony and in my head assumed I needed a 16-35 but 99% of the time I'm using it at a fixed focal length anyways! 20mm and 24-105 is perfect!
Levi your audio in front of the van in the wind sounded great! What deadcat are you using on that lav? I'm looking for a lav solution that works while snowboarding
I bought the lume cube from your link, it sent me a coupon and made me refresh the link via text so hopefully it still came as your referral. Great content keep it up!!
Your colour grading is amazing... Please do make a video of colour grading work flow 🙏🏽 ... You are by far sensible youtubers out there .. thanks for making the video
Thank you for this video 🙂 swiching to sony. This video is just what i needed.
That was a great, helpful video. Well thought out and presented. Thank you.
Thank you! This is very, very helpful. And the great footage you show is a proof of concept, I guess. Great work!
Glad it was helpful!
The 55mm f1.8 shots on the "hoverboards" are truly awesome. Well done.
I have the 20mm and LOVE it!! That 24-105 looks awesome too! Thanks for the tip :)
I'm hooked as soon as I heard what you were saying and then saw the 20mm 1.8 footage. I shoot 35 1.4 and 15mm 2.0 but neither have IS.... I haven't finished watching as I stopped to drop this comment but you sold me on the 20mm bro. Thank you!!
