  • When I was a kid, I didn't like Muhammad Ali. I had learned from my parents that he was boastful, a draft dodger, and so on. What they really meant was that he was a Black man who didn't know his place. But I bought into it and rooted against him in his fights. Now, all these years later, after watching many interviews I never saw when I was young, and after learning a bit about the ways of the world, my view has changed completely. He was a hero. And I do not use that word lightly. He was a great boxer, but his real greatness was as a man and a leader. And not just for Black Americans struggling to recover a stolen culture, but to ALL people facing injustice. It takes a BIG man to do what he did, to sacrifice what he did, to stand up as he did. I apologize for taking so long to recognize this. I know now that when he claimed to be the greatest, it was a jest and a ploy. But he really is.

    • @Blake Ashley, many black families drank that Kool-Aid. We felt as you did, with the poison of being "embarrassed for" Muhammad Ali/Cassius Clay. How lost we all were. It took truly paying attention to what he did in Africa and these 'hidden interviews' to understand the depth of his courage and spirit. A hero/revolutionary right before our eyes! Apology not necessary, your honesty is refreshing! Also what HEAT1996 says is truth.

  • I believe Ali was a genius, very wise, could give a speech anywhere, when he spoke everyone stopped and listened. He gave me an autograph when I was 10, he had a broken jaw from Ken Norton and could barely talk, but he made time to try to talk to us kids. I'm 57 now, and wouldn't take anything for the autograph. He was my hero and a whole lot of white people like myself loved him.

He made let me through all alone for 2 minutes and he talked and I made laugh so hard he had to forced himself to stop.I had imitated him to start the laughter. I got his autograph which I lost and a photo which I still have , I treasure it and My 2 min with Ali Next to my kids birth those were favorite ever. • Giovanni: "I'm bad at spelling too." You see this woman loves her black people so much she put aside the fact that she was then becoming one of America's most gifted authors, and just straight up joined in Ali's humbleness about how we all need to learn. I love how she just can't stop blushing! This is a great contrast to her interview with Baldwin where you feel she is much tougher on Jimmy because she's in her 'ring' with a champ. Here she's just soakin up all that Ali charm! Beautiful sister!

To deny the obvious truth about this odious little man's philandering is just plain self deception. Wake up and stop hero worshipping someone who you wouldn't trust your daughter with.

      @atiphwyne5609@atiphwyne56094 жыл бұрын
    • @Ronald Macafee It would be better for you to at leastto know how to spell flea. Your now Christ Messiah was formerly the prophet of Islam, both titles are for your information according to Islamic Shariah law blasphemous. This puts whosoever subscribes to such a belief knowing the law and consequences derived there from outside the fold of Islam. This means if you die on this creed you die as an unbeliever. A minority sect originating in Detroit is really not the same as the Islam originating from Mecca by the final prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h Why don't you accept the Islam embraced by the son of Elijah Poole Jabir Herbert Mohammed and of course the great Mohammed Ali instead of this excommunicated sect which will put you in the hellfire for ever. I invite you to salvation and eternal life in heaven instead of damnation and eternal punishment in the hellfire. May Allah grant you guidance. Ameen.

    • He may have been the most important American of the 20th century. He was certainly the most famous. The most recognizable person on earth at one point. And that was before the internet. He resurrected boxing. He brought mega-money to sports. He was unjustly denied his right to earn a living, stripped of his title. He came back and was even more relevant. He changed minds. He softened hearts. He met with kings. Walked in ghettos. Went to the White House and Africa. Starred on tv and movies. Spoke at colleges. He was a conservative man with a liberal message. He truly fought for freedom. People loved him all over the world and when he lost his ability to speak, was still able to bring people to tears when he lit the torch at the 1996 Olympics. We may never see anyone close to Ali again.

  • I'm from old Europe and Ali has been my inspiration as a human ever since I listen to him live at penne state in the late 60's. As for an athlete he was my hero ever since he became olympic champion in 1960, aged 18, in Rome, under the name of C. Clay. This interview brought tears to my eyes. Nikki Giovanni is beautiful, so full of sensitivity, nobility and intelligence ...

Muhammad Ali you are so cherished in memories, you had a real different aura around you! Ah! If I was in that era, would have been the luckiest to see him during his heydays! Nikki so sober, so amazing! Where have those days vanished? Would the time be ever so again? Would there be so nice people again? I wonder, probable never!!! Salute to the legend!!!
