'fairport' with the lovely sandy denny again. this is the full-length version of "white dress" as performed on august 8, 1975 for "the london weekend show" on lwt. as nothing more than the first minute of the footage has surfaced so far, i've filled in stills for the rest of the track (as i did with many of my uploads).
dave swarbrick had written this beautiful waltz for the "rising for the moon" album and with sandy denny's vocal delivery one has to be a pretty hardhearted character to not be moved at least a little bit by this excellent performance. enjoy!
I love this woman's voice. A rare talent indeed. She may not have lived for a long time, but she helped to make the world a better place through music and song.
A beautiful reminder of a unique little time in my life, when things seemed to be nicer than they are now (or anytime since the mid 70’s).
@MrMjp58 They say that everything was better way back when - not EVERYTHING, I'd say . . . but A LOT!
@@lazypokerblues Then we hadn't lost the art of laughing at ourselves, not taking ourselves too seriously, agreeing to disagree and caring for others despite our differences, which were many.
@@gc-vz4ib Thank you - I'm absolutely with you! 👍
This woman has one of the most moving voices I've ever heard.
I don't think I've ever heard her sing a note that didn't pierce my heart.
Same here.
Agreed.
Yep.
And I couldn't agree more. Such a sad, sad loss. I'm so glad I got the chance to see her once.
Soooo beautiful tune. She was THE queen of the folk-rock music, unforgetable
God it is such a shame we do not have more footage of Sandy.
Sandy was too good , nobody could hold a candle to her . They say the brightest stars burn out sooner. She was the brightest ❤
And Eva Cassidy
@@veeeforvendettaTotally agree with both of you xx
To talented for this planet glad she gave us her voice r.i.p sandy.....
Sandy Denny and Eva Cassidy, unbelievable voices taken much to soon. What a beautiful song.
Sandy was my favorite singer for decades, but then I discovered Eva Cassidy, and I hate to say it but I think she is an even better singer.
And Grace Griffith :(
@@lindsayheywood7195 no, they're just different. There's no way to compare those two. Would you put Linda Ronstadt or Carole King in the comparison? I think not :-). You might want to listen to Grace Griffith who was also taken way too soon :-(.
@@deansongs I had not heard of Grace Griffith, but I just listened to her song water, fire, and smoke. She has a lovely voice and it is a beautiful song. I will be listening to more of her stuff. Thank you for the recommendation!
@@lindsayheywood7195 awesome! One of my favorite songs to hear her sing is cup of kindness. Warning it might give you chills.
Just a lovely song sung by an angel.
How come no one writes or performs like this anymore?? It's so simple, yet elegant and stately. Sandy Denny's voice is what I imagine an Angel in heaven sounds like. What a great find.
Awesome voice our Sandy had, and such a tragedy to lose her so young.
I basically consider Sandy Denny essential for my calming heart needs
It is a shame the whole video is not available. This is one of the most passionate vocal performances I have ever seen!
If only there was proper diagnosis and mental health on the NHS in the 70s. This precious jewel would still be with us
That voice was something else.
Moves me to the very core of my being.
She's so young, vibrant and lovely: an angel of the first degree.
This is certainly a beautiful song, It sails into the Heavens with Sandy’s stunning vocals, the mandolin, and the perfectly understated band performance. I can’t stop listening to it, it’s sublime!
Simply the most beautiful voice ever.
The more of her work I hear, the more amazed I am. She put her heart and guts into what she sang. She's one of the reasons I have such a soft spot for British women!
One of a kind is Sandy Denny. God rest her soul.
Sandy could bring a tear to a prosthetic eye - truly sumptuous vocals. To think that Swarbs wrote a gentle, bucolic song like this too. Amazing!!
Great song by Swarbrick sandy unbelievable both sadly gone r.i.p.
His song 'Rosie' is beautiful too.
My elder sister had this for her first dance at her wedding.
How lovely to hear. What a perfect choice.
Ditto. My sister in law did also.
So did I, only 4 years ago....
Yes, yes, yes, forever yes. You have melted my soul into gold. 🦋💖🏹
Beautiful sandy denny such a sad life, and a sad grave, that looks so forlorn, may she rest in peace
I bought the Rising For The Moon album when it first came out and have loved this simple but utterly beautiful song ever since. Sandy’s voice is just incredible. Such a desperately sad loss to music.
Me too. It's considered a bit outside the normal run of Fairport convention albums because all the songs are modern writing, but i think it's quite exceptional.
I always thought of RFTM as a cross between Fairport and Fotheringay - sadly underrated and unfairly ignored.
For each lineup that Sandy played in there is only one (professional) video. This one is the most beautiful. Let's hope the rest will surface, too. And I'm sure that in some archive there are even more recordings that will one day come to light.
I hope so
Just beautiful, that's all you need to say!
Sandy took Fairport to another level. Grace Slick did the same for Jefferson Airplane.
Totally agree Tim on both counts!
i cant remember a more emotive rendition of any song i've ever heard by sandy denny, or anyone for that matter. absolutely perfect, and much too short, a pity they didn't try and extend this some how, with a swarbrick violin solo and then repeat.
There is so much dross around today by singers who are acclaimed as stars - Sandy Denny really was one and her bands were too - I love this lady's songs, such a pity the younger generation don't know her and her music - RIP lovely talented Sandy
Stunning... never saw this live footage before of White Dress .. got to see poor Sandy perform twice in NY in 1974 ... incrediblly powerful and introspective voice.. also great to see Trevor Lucas in this video... now if only a live video performance can be found of Nick Drake!
Awesome as ever, the voice of an angel
There aren’t many singers today (if any) who can sing with the depth and emotion of Sandy...
Exactly. Her depth gives me goosebumps.
Joanne. Are there any?
There aren't any. Just a bunch of half-nekkid bum jumpers pretending to have talent.
there is none really
The greatest died young! R.ip Sandy denny, you're a angel!
Oh what memories this brings back, only saw Sandy once, she has lived in my heart ever since
Staggering in its beauty
Beautiful Many thanks for posting
I can't find enough superlatives to describe my admiration for Sandy and Fairport Convention......those of us who recognize much of America's "traditional music" came from the ages old folk songs, ballads and laments of the British Isles thank bands like FC and Steeleye Span for keeping those songs alive
FC and Steeleye Span besides Joni Mitchell were my all time favorites growing up with the added groups like Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead...
Great song from an unappreciated record. Lovely.
Unforgettable Sandy, angelic woman, you make a grown man cry - to coin a phrase. You deserved so much more inner peace and joy for how much inner peace and joy you gave to all those who have been touched deeply and indelibly by your voice.
@Jos van der Steen You put that absolutely right, Jos! Even your words bring a tear to my eyes . . .
Same for me. I used to dance to this tune with my wife and still I do. Thanks Sandy!
Sandy was a lot of things, an angelic voice yes , angelic woman no and she'd agree with that !
@@MrPhilfridge Thank you - I do not posess such intimate knowledge of her, but I trust you do. I may well have confused the singer with the song.
Read her biography 'ive always kept a unicorn '
This song, really a prayer, brings me close to tears. The beauty of her voice and quiet desperation she gives to the lyrics...
Taken from the earth before her time .
Amazing band , Amazing music . Soooooo many wonderful memories of Sandy.
The golden voice of The Lady Sandy Denny. This song is one of my favourites
Very pretty song. Never heard of it til today.
Beyond beatiful!
This is the version of the band many call Fotheringport Confusion, with band members coming and going. Sandy held them together, though.
My british favorite group!
Yet another iconic band destined for a posthumous induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Absolutely criminal.
This is Rock n Roll?
@@huskyfaninmass1042 Yes it is. “Rock n Roll” is not limited to “hard rock”.
@@kenmario6284 This is Folk Rock at its best
Never seen the early part of this video before - extraordinary performance.
@Ralph the Wonder Llama . . . unfortunately I've still not seen the rest (the lion's share!) of that awesome performance footage! :-(
Thank you for putting this together. I love them so much.
. . . you're welcome - i'd rather see the "lws" footage in its entirety (i'm sure it IS OUT THERE somewhere).
Oh wow this is the first time I've heard it in its entirety - Thanks for posting!!
The only singer that makes me cry just thinking about her.
It's magical, thank you so much for sharing the video.
Thanks Lazy Poker for completing the truncated video with photo stills and putting the completed song together. Beautiful!!
@Malcolm Wallace I'm glad you like it, Malcolm - still hoping for the clip in its entirety to surface one fine day . . . !
Beautiful.
Dear Sandy, I love you forever and ever...
there is no better singer when she is top form...this is one of those occasions
Sheer perfection
Gorgeous......
sandy, full of life, unduly cut short. you still make this old heart cry silent tears
@albert cruchaga Beautiful words, Albert - I'm with you!
Thank you so much. Pure beauty. I pray that the rest of the footage re appears. We have precious little of Sandy. She always makes me weep.
such a beautiful soul so talented
Thanks for that! Saw Sandy with Fairport in November 75. Brilliant!
It's time somebody posted a comment about how great Sandy was.... Lets never forget her. The voice of an angel, and the presents of a goddess.
@user-pn7lq6bh7r "The voice of an angel and the presence of a goddess" - this is such an accurate description that I wish I'd come up with it! 👍
Wow. Never saw this. Lovely.
She's my favorite singer. She's fantastic.
I was so fortunate to see Fairport in the 70s at the Sanders Theater in Cambridge, MA. Sandy was apparently ill at the time as she had to take a break during the show. Fairport was one of my favorite groups when Sandy Denny was with them. This song is amazingly beautiful. She is missed - RIP Sandy Denny. Thank you for the video,
Lovely Sandy Denny, Rest In peace.
Sandys voice has some of that quality of tone and timbre of the young Coleen Nolan.Great stuff.
So beautiful, perfect pitch on every note, what a talent.
'A Little Bird With Angels Wings'...
I do miss hearing Sandy's voice ~ thanks for this!
The best. The VERY best. No debate.
I once talked online to the guy who found this clip in the archives while researching a book on Sandy. He told me that he had to promise not to make the full clip available. Yet one wonders why they keep sitting on this treasure and if maybe there is more, an interview perhaps? Of all the available footage, this is my favorite because Sandy is absolutely at it and it's a song that means a lot to her.
Lovely picture. Thanks for that story
You've done a fine job, LP, and have made the most out of just over one precious minute of what has to be of the Holy Grail of lost Sandy/Fairport footage.
@Kevin Laffey . . . thank you, Kevin - I'm glad you like it!
Magic
3 people didn't like this,why it's perfection
such a unique voice so sad she wasnt with us long, what would she have done had she lived,
Probably the same things Carly Simon or Joan Baez have done.
Eternamente Sandy! Fairport Convention forever and ever!!!
adoro tu voz y tu manera de expresar!!! siempre me hace llorar y emocionarme!!! espero conocerte en el Cielo, Sandy!!!! eres una de mis inspiraciones!!!!
Goosepickles!! . She sometimes played in our pub when they played in Amsterdam.
So much rubbish survives all over the place, yet somebody lost most of the film of this majestic performance ! Still, great job, thanks !
i'm not sure that the rest of the footage is actually LOST - it just hasn't surfaced so far . . . yet. i still have a glimmer of hope, it might come to light one fine day.
@@lazypokerblues Oh yes please !!
100% sacked idiot 🎶
@@lazypokerblues there was a fire in a BBC warehouse apparently. Somehow nearly every reel of Sandy was lost, but everything with Jimmy Savile in survived. Or so it seems. 😔 😒
Perfect! Thank you for posting this. Xx
She sang like an Angel. and drank like a fish. Too sad to lose her talent so young, bless her.
SO MUCH BETTER than the album version of this song- she sings this melody like an old seasoned jazz musician.
Meravigliosa ✨💖 Wonderful 💐🙏
I miss her she was the best
I'm sure l read somewhere that their was a fire at the bbc ,and some of sandys work was lost along with other artistes. Which was a tragedy, so these clips must be treasured ,for there will never be another sandy 😢
"Rising for the Moon" was a very underrated Fairport album. Never got all the criticism it got. This song and the title track were the highlights.
It because its a nice pop album. You got it right? Nice, but poppy. Dont get me wrong, still on my CD shelf.
@@joannitaxvi3386 Yes, I've had the album for years, first on vinyl, now on CD. Fairport were a fine traditional folk band, a fine rock band with folk leanings, and a fine folk-rock band with pop leanings. Why is one style inherently superior to another? I think Fairport's versatility is a strong point. I love Steeleye Span, too, but they flat-out embarrassed themselves when they tried to go more pop. I wasn't calling "Rising" Fairport's best album, just never understood all the vitriol I've seen posted about it over the years. It's not Liege and Lief, but I think its overall quality stands up well.
Aye, Mr H. But most of the songs on it were better than most . . . Almost everything she wrote and sang seemed in some sense to echo the past and fade into the future, and still do. Sandy, the one and only. So much soul
How could you not fall in love with her?
Thank you 😊
Beautiful! !!
Wonderful!
Soooo amazing voice😍
Pure magic
Well done Lazy Poker! Thanks.
A great vocalist who was deep into traditional British styles and ancient songs .
But only a minute of footage?... Shame on the BBC for poor caretaking of their archives! Beautiful and heartbreaking stuff - I wish there were more!
@ Brett Davis Sorry, Brett, but this is from the archives of LWT (London Weekend Television), which now belongs to ITV (I believe). So it's got nothing to do with the BBC. Apart from that please check my answers to John Ramsey and ysgol3 from some months ago.
