  • What a great video! As are all in this series. I loved 657! I broke out in them AFTER cushion hitch and air ride seats were standard. But long before video game joy-sticks, GPS-cut control. Rght at first, no A/C or ROPS. THE next seasons worked with Big Horn Const. out of Sheridan, Wyoming. They were part of Peter Kewit&sons. They had GREAT equipment, great bosses and great jobs. I learned how to operate everything but the mine-based drag line shovel. They kept me busy operating equipment, driving equipment transport and working in the Rosebud, Hanna and Black Butte mine for short streches waiting on the next hi-way project to break. Lots of I80 work and lots of overtime since I could do what needed done on any of their equipment. Great job to feed a growing family&pay the house payment. I am greatful for those opportunities.

  • In 1976, I and my crew rebuilt one of the two 639 scrapers shipped from South America to our Miami Shop. It took about 3 1/2 months for it to be completely rebuilt. Both engines/trans, hydraulics's, new bowl three inch thick steel, blade, tires and paint job! It was like new again! It is with satisfaction to do a job well!

    • I worked at Kelly Tractor in Miami for 35 years. Who did you work for in Miami?

      @philheese1728@philheese17283 жыл бұрын
    • @@philheese1728 Kelly Tractor hired me not just that I could do the job as a mechanic, but a special project as well! The lead mechanic for overhauling these two 639's, I believe that were the models, took the part numbers off the parts ordered and put that part number strip on his clip board that he new the part was there. Unfortunately, now all these parts didn't have a part number on them. My first job, because I had a degree in mechanical engineering power train, was to go through all the parts, one at a time, using micrometers/parts books/spec's sheets to put a part number back on each part. It took me over two weeks working ten hour days six days a week to get it done. Luckily, I had it done before the units arrived from South America. Each machine had a crew on them with Stan and his crew and I with mine. After that the bosses saw I had a brain besides mechanical ability, they put me with some marine mechanics to get knowledge in that field! I must have impressed Mr Brown and the Younger Kelly as when they opened the Key West shop, I was asked to go there with Bruce Beckstrom and Ray Ford. Living on my sailboat was a plus for them as well as they only had two houses on Stock Island for their employees. I docked just 35 ft from our shop that my commute was much shorter. After Kelly moved out of Key West, I stayed on working at Bill's Diesel on Stock Island until they cut back so Bob Chango GMC-Chevrolet-Cadillac-Pontiac was were I ended up until I met my future wife leaving to pursue her in 1984. We have been married for 35 years and I now am retired from Ryder Systems living in Lake Tahoe area.

They were too cheap to pay for trucking so they apparently drove several scrapers across the Mackinac Bridge and US-2 to the jobsite. That 140 miles in the UP, plus whatever distance they drove in the lower peninsula from their last job.

  • Are there any formal break-in guidelines? Some people like to run new diesels kind of hard so that the combustion pressures seat the rings, but these engines are already probably run-in pretty hard at the factory. I would think that with modern oils and tolerances, you could pretty much give it hell right off the trailer.
