Buffalo Wild Wings has been selling boneless chicken wings for YEARS, but one man dared to ask, "is this a legitimate chicken wing?" So ARE they chicken wings? And is there something suspicious about the way these chains, such a BWW, Domino's, and Papa Johns name their boneless meats. Let's find out exactly what these restaurants are hiding from us...

MatPat didn't address the fact that a de-boned wing is probably more expensive than a regular wing. Even if you buy your wings with bone, you need to factor in the labor of de-boning them.
I have seen several places where bone in wings are more expensive and both bone in and boneless were sold by weight. So bone in was more expensive for less food
@@captininsanoo00They said de-boned, not boneless
@@ThomasTheThermonuclearBomb it's the same thing
Boneless wings are actually cheaper at most places. BWW for example: $15.29 for 10 bone-in wings, compared to $13.29 for 10 boneless wings.
technically yes but its not, boneless is probably the same as a chicken tender and a de-boned wing is manually removing the bone from the wing and thats a hard process. @@a_random_pie
I remember ordering Wendy’s boneless wings in 2009. The cashier turned around and grabbed a clamshell box of nuggets, poured sauce on it, shook the box and placed it in front of me. It felt like I paid a couple extra dollars to have my nuggets shaken.
Shaken not stirred?
@@paulj6756lmao
At least the sass was free.
Maybe the sauce was made from angel tears or something else rare and expensive
I would like my nuggets shaken, not stirred.
So I used to work in food service and the amount of customers I had that were shocked when I told them boneless wings aren't wings was high. This guy isn't alone.
I worked in the restaurant industry for over 15 years and NEVER one time had this issue. He may not be alone, but he's in the very extreme minority.
I genuinely have always thought that the reason they still call the wings is because adults don’t wanna eat tenders or nuggets
Makes sense
Nuggets I get, but what's wrong with tenders?
@@Endershock1678if I were to take a guess both nuggets and tenders can be referred to as chicken nuggies and tendies but there isn't one for wings
@@CanniestTread6Boneless wingies
I mean chicken nuggets and chicken tenders definitely have more in common with each other than with boneless wings chicken nuggets are breaded and fried, but the breeding is thin so they're still chewy. they're usually small, and are not covered in sauce chicken tenders are also fried, but the breading is thicker so they're far crispy. they also tend to be larger than chicken nuggets. they're also not covered in sauce boneless wings aren't fried, or at least not breaded. they're just cooked chicken covered in sauce
I worked at a Buffalo Wild Wings for 7 years and was a manager during the wing price increase it was actually insane how much wings were to buy per case and what the corporate standard for our store was alone

I think when you consider differences in pricing you also have to take into account the labour of deboning the wings.
Its still an extra cost on the wing. processing will always add something.@@Caterpillartears
Also, the weight difference after deboning. If you think you’re getting a certain weight of pure wing meat and no bones, the price would change
@@Caterpillartears The problem is de-boning a wing would yield drastically lower volume, which wouldn't sell well at all. They'd have to add more wing meat per clump to make up the difference. Honestly, I think using thigh meat would solve so much of it. They're both dark meat, so they taste similar.
@@Caterpillartears Then you have to account for the costs of operating the machine, such as electricity and maintenance.
plus the fact that wings provide less meat for the same cost difference
I think a more important comparison for whether there would be confusion over the name boneless wings would be how many restaurants are selling deboned wings as "Boneless Wings" because that would be more likely to create the association between the name and the product in someone's mind and lead to a legal harm when that expectation isn't fulfilled
I think a more boneless wings that would work for you would look great
From my research, there are ZERO large chains that use deboned chicken wings for their boneless wings.
One thing you didn’t mention was that the places not calling them boneless wings seemed to be pretty much just pizza places vs sit down restaurants that are focused on bar type food. Plus those places seem to have a tendency to default to having slightly smaller pieces and serving then either topped or with a dipping sauce as opposed to tossed. Any place that’s big on wings seems to call them boneless wings.
Do you have buffalo wild wings app?
Wingstop is better😊
Food theory idea: what made Breakfast foods come to be considered Breakfast foods and why are they always so isolated from every other food/ meal group? Most restaurants that serve Breakfast foods either refuse to serve them past a certain time or advertise that they are available all day. Lunch and Dinner are usually interchangeable, but why not Breakfast? Why does no other meal get this treatment?
I want to know that too
They dont serve it after breakfast time because all the prep work required to serve them is not worth it outside of the peak breakfast hour since there is very low demand later in the day
Been done all over the Internet.
@@dscarmo, Thank you for informing me. I didn't know this was the case before now.
@@dscarmo That's certainly part of it but then why are breakfast food, breakfast foods in the first place? Why do we collectively think of pancakes and waffles as something you only eat for breakfast but hamburgers can be lunch or dinner? Nowadays I'd imagine most restaurants just prepare a bunch of batter for pancakes and waffles ahead of time and freeze it so there's not really any more prep that needs to be done compared to most others foods.
I worked at Buffalo Wild Wings and most of everything came in frozen. The only thing that isn’t frozen are the sauces and veggies. Their prices are outrageous for the quality. They don’t make any of their sides and even though the guacamole says it’s made in house, if they’re out they will store buy it. They are a glorified fast food restaurant
"glorified fast food restaurant" is basically my understanding of what a sports bar really is though, so that's not shocking.
That's the vast majority of restaurants, especially big chains.
Literally any chain restaurants though. As much as I know it, Bdubs still slaps some nights.
I knew everything that you just said, but I still bought there because of the BOGO. I was able to buy a bit of food that'd last me two evenings, especially when I was working long hours. It was great when I could order delivery, but then they cut back and made it pick up. But what made me stop returning was "$.99 order in pick up fee" they implemented. You're going to charge me to pick up my own food? I told the poor girl to let corporate know they lost a customer for life over such a greedy thing. I've been pretty vocal over it and hope they either learn or go under.
When I worked there the wings were never frozen. We'd get dozens of cases in every Monday, and they took up most of our walk in fridge. But we had two walk in fridge, one for meat, and one for veggies. The quac was made by adding pico to some premashed avocado mix that came frozen in bags. But this was in 2008, and I left in 2009 and they had been going down in quality the whole time I worked there. I left when they tried to make the employees pay for food waste.
So I can sue the various lunch restaurants, because I cant take an underwater trip in my sandwich?
As a side note, you can probably look this up to confirm, from what I've heard "French Fries" is a term used because the potatoes are "French Cut." One of the founding fathers, I think Jefferson, said he wanted French Cut Potatoes for his meal. And when frying things in oil became a thing, they named them French Fries (short for French Cut, Fried potatoes). Again look it up to confirm because it's what I heard.
The Cut mentioned is called Battonette and is still a popular french fry cut, the side dish itself has existed in europe for much longer
Shouldn’t we also factor in the labour costs for the value analysis? deboning the real wings looked like a lot more extra work
I was about to make the same point. Deboned is the main selling feature of the product, if you have done no effort to debone it, then the customer has been cheated. It’s like advertising you’ve hand kneaded a dough and baked it in an earthen oven, but in reality it’s machine kneaded baked in modern oven. Even if you use a more expensive flour than advertised, it’s still a net financial loss for the customer
As someone who has worked in the Chicken Industry (on the factory side) deboning chicken is one of the hardest tasks in the entire industry. While automation is technically possible it is basically all manual deboning.
I disagree. Boneless thighs are only about 2% more expensive than their bone in counterparts
@@TezalTube Can confirm. I live in an area where chicken factories are everywhere, and chicken deboning is one of the hardest but well-paying jobs you can get with no experience or degree. I would never do it though, you have to be highly coordinated and the chicken is very cold so you have to wear these thick gloves that still make your fingers cold.
@@ZanesFacebook thighs are much easier to de-bone than wings, though. And you would need to do significantly more of it. A restaurant like BWW would need to hire multiple full-time employees to keep up (for EACH store). (I know they probably wouldn't do the prep there, but it's the same job either way)
We need a restaurant serving: Tenders, nuggets, strips, tendies, nuggies, (edit:) fingers, and boneless wings. (Edit:) Popcorn Chicken and The Chickrib are irregular event specials.
And chicken fingered too

True. If I really did think the boneless wings really were wings I'd just chalk it up to a learning curve on my part, and never order them again. I want dark meat!
Could you cover the optimal way to do the DougDoug Fast Food Challenge? I would adore that! Thanks for the amazing content ❤
As a current Papa John's employee, I can inform you that just a month or 2 ago, Papa John's changed the name from "chicken poppers" to "boneless wings"
Lol because what’s a chicken popper anyway
Yep, because people see "wing" and they will buy it. They saw that everyone is getting away with the scam and so they jumped on it.
1. The name "chicken popper" sounds idiotic. 2. They're just following the trend. Personally, I don't think it's super egregious that anyone call them "boneless wings," but I do hate that term, because I actually like dark meat and wings and "boneless wings" are neither. But I don't think BWW deserves to get sued or anything, either.
@@getyaw8up Exactly.
@@getyaw8up I assumed they were going with the pieces being bite-sized and able to just "pop" them into your mouth. Still a silly name, but that's also kind of the point.
I’ve always thought it’s interesting what Walmart does on their frozen chicken. They call them “boneless wyngz*” and then they have a note on the bag that says “*contains no wing meat”
Tyson does that also
@@drjekelmrhyde Possible that Walmart brand wings are just Tyson brand wings with a different label.
That is a common way around this problem. It's just like pleather. If you sell it as leather your in trouble but if you say fake leather that sounds cheep. So you ad or change a letter to make the same or similar word. Easy way to tell people its like leather but not, and probably what restaurants will do if BWW even comes close to losing this case.

Also, I'm guessing the "Per Pound" cost of wings includes the weight of the bones. Which are not edible. So "Boneless Wings" are definitely better value.
Didn't have labor cost of removing the wing either. Way higher cost if they are bought deboned
Boneless wings have way more bread usually. Boneless wings are a much worse value. Why else would restaurants push them so hard over normal wings? Most of the time they are cheaper. You think they're doing that for YOUR benefit? What a sucker.
All “boneless wings” I’ve seen are considerably smaller, less meat, & taste worse.
You should really add other theories like animal theory
Way to much breading on boneless wings also on General Tso's chicken. The breading has greatly increased in the lase several years.
Also, I’m incredibly proud of Matt for featuring a flying BUFFALO at the end instead of an American bison when…most people don’t know the difference.
I didn't know there was a difference 😂
@@CottonCandySharksThere's an obvious difference when you look at them from side by side. The horns on the sides? Connected on Buffalos, disconnected on Bison. Bisons are more hairy and just look more unnatural to me tbh. 🐃 and a 🦬 emoji, for "real" comparisons. Correction: they LOOK connected on Buffalo. Apparently there's still a tiny bit of space between them. But it's close enough lol
the frozen ones at wal-mart actually have an intersting way of getting around this naming predicament. The bone-in wings are named normally, "Chicken Wings", but the boneless are "Boneless Chicken Wyngz", with a Y and a Z.
the intro was the best part of this whole video
I love these LegalEagle type videos, where you cover the history of the dish and an intersting court case that arises from a popular misconception surrounding said dish. Truly entertaining and informative content...! (Shoutout to Devin, you guys should do some more vids together)
How amazing would it be if they collaborated!
Historically, their "collaborations" have been Devin accusing Matt of plagiarism, even though it was easily provable that it wasn't true.
I remember a time when wings were the leftover cut and super cheap. We'd buy them whole and bake them. My grandma told me stories how the wings were her cut. She was the youngest in the family during the depression. Her parents got the breasts, her older siblings fought for the thighs and drums, and poor grandma was left with the wings (which she complained about, but secretly loved). She passed her love of wings onto me, and I can't afford them anymore.
I think I got one. A lot of people share their food with their pets, and probably most are worrying about their non human companions eating the wrong human foods. What foods can and should be shared with your animal friends? Seeing my dad spoil my dog Bella has this question on my mind frequently.
why are food theory videos just the best videos to have playing when you are playing video games.

PERFECT VIDEO IDEA: what makes a food a breakfast food?
I feel like when saying “chicken wing” it’s more describing the way the chicken is prepped and not so much the cut of chicken. When ordering bone in wings from some places, you can get a mix of both wing meat and drumsticks. Shepherd pie could be seen as a similar issue, where it’s a dish with ground meat, potatoes, cheese, and other vegetables like corn or peas. However, unless the meat is lamb (which it rarely is in restaurants) it’s not actually a shepherd pie. Corn and peas aren’t ingredients in an actual shepherd pie either, but there’s a good chance you’ll get those too. The guy suing wild wings isn’t wrong that he didn’t get “what was advertised” at face value, although if we’re gonna start nitpicking that names don’t match what your getting, then stuff like pineapples really better watch out.

Ive been fighting with my friends about this exact topic for years now and we too settled on calling them chicken chunks xD
Speaking of chicken, i recently got some chicken with a spicy “spiked honey” dipping sauce (which was not good). this lead to a semantics argument with my mom over whether the ‘spiked’ in ‘spiked honey’ referred to it being “spicy” or “being infused with alcohol” (like how we cook with beer or wine)
I would assume “being infused with alcohol”, similar to the term’s usage in spiked punch. I don’t think I have ever seen it refer to spice.

Food Theory Idea What is the best way to beat the Doug Doug drive thru challenge
I'll be honest here, I thought Boneless Chicken Wings were just Wing Meat with no bone. Guess that means my favorite wing place is lying to me. Though I'm not one to care to much so long as its taste lol
Actually as of recently, (as someone who orders Papa Johns a lot over the years) they have changed their name from poppers to wings as well. I was confused and actually called the store to find out if anything was different but, not really. They just renamed the poppers to wings and branded them as a 'new item' on their menu when really they were just the same poppers I was getting for 5~ years living here. Not sure when you started doing your research for this video, but this change must have been at best like, 2 months ago as I clearly remember during THIS summer they were still called poppers.
The factory where we make them still calls them poppers
Food Theory idea: expensive restaurant foods that can be made at home affordably. Or like certain "fancy" foods are cheaper than you think.
Food theory idea: Is Breakfast really the most important meal of the day?
I just want to mention that the price thing Matt talked about at the end needs to be dived into more. Cause usually the boneless wings also have a different cost than the regular bone in wings. Some times being more expensive, when I was younger I used to think that was cause the cost was for the labor of them de-boning the wing
I think they dont get deboned wings because its cheaper. No need to pay the labour for taking the bones and the pieces wont look "weird" (transporting bonesless wings would mush them together probably?)
Could you make a video about impossible meat? I think it'd be interesting to talk about how (from what I've been told) it's just as processed as regular chicken nuggets or deli ham, but it's marketed like it's healthier. Or even just about what it means to be processed in the first place
That actually sounds really interesting. I hope they do a theory on this!
This is actually a good idea
Not a defender of their false advertisements, just a vegetarian, but something that isn't being brought up is how horribly unsustainable the beef market is right now. There is such a ridiculous amount of beef being consumed and it's so horrible on the environment, not using any alternatives is just crazy. Impossible beef is definitely not healthier but I do think it is a net positive overall.
I mean, being processed doesn't automatically make something unhealthy, it depends on a lot of factors, like the preservatives being used. Processed food is kind of an all encompassing term, much like GMOs, there's a reason to be careful with the kind of processed food you consume, but labeling it all as bad is also ignorant in its own way because of the reasons we do process foods🤔
Processed if you find ingredients in it you don’t find in a domestic kitchen
