Full build of Rye Field Model Sherman M4A3 76W HVSS W/full interior 1:35 (RM-5042). The video provide a detailed step by step guide as well as in depth hints and tips which I think will be proved useful to people who want to build this kit.
This is the first video which include the in-box review and the partially construction of hull (interior and exterior), including transmission and engine.
This video build is dedicated to my wife who gave me this amazing kit as a birthday present :)
I hope you like it. Enjoy!!!

  • I miss the old days ... When Tamiya made a short run of 1 : 25'th scale full interior tanks . I had both a Tiger - 1 and a Henschel King Tiger . Even though I was living hand to mouth I always tried to make time to build a model to try to keep me from going nuts . The sad part is that where I kept the models at a friends house until one day he decided to make some combat damage with his BB gun and liter fluid . Those kits were about ( at that time ) $ 50 dollars US This was in the late 70's . The accurate details of each tank was great . I was going to do the wiring and fuel lines but to my shock to see that damage was too much .. The only 1 : 25'th scale kit that remained from Tamiya was a Hunting ( Jagdpanzer ) Panther , but it didn't have a detailed interior but was battery operated Non R / C .

    • I can't really understand why you do to be honest. Nowadays kits are far more detailed and accurate, better fit (ok not all kits), you have many choices and prices are fair. I understand the power of nostalgia but I think we are living in the golden age of plastic modelling :)

      @GeorgeModellingforBeginners@GeorgeModellingforBeginners3 жыл бұрын
    • @@GeorgeModellingforBeginners Yes things in the hobby have improved quite a lot . My nostalgia is about it's being the first ones to have full detail Interiors for that size and that price for back then and the only ones here in the US again at that time

  • Impressive and intimidating in equal measures! Although I'm only 2 months into my journey with scale modelling I really want to attempt one of these. But I'll wait until I've watched the full build before investing, I can't even imagine how you will paint the interior!

    @TonySaunders@TonySaunders3 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks man. I would definitely encourage you to try an interior kit as they are so rewarding and you also learn a lot about the actual tank. However, I recommend to build up your modelling skills first before you try something so complicate as they might be discourage you. These modern full interior kits are so detailed but on the other hand so overengineered at some sections. Also the interior kits require so much work (estimate that I can finish 5 non-interior kits at the same time). I did the RFM Tiger a year back (my first interior) and it took me 5 months to complete. And yes you are right, the hardest thing is building/planning/painting them. In sake of comparison, the RFM Sherman is more complicated than the RFM Tiger which making the painting very challenging. But I have a plan in place :) so please stay tuned.

    • @@GeorgeModellingforBeginners yeah I think it's wise to ease myself into it that's why I've just bought a Bradley M2 with interior to practise with. Things have moved in since I used to build airfix kits as a kid and I moved to Iceland 2 years ago, the long dark winter months have given me a huge amount of spare time to work with models so I'm learning fast to take my time with my builds. Maybe next winter I'll try out the kit as importing stuff here is ludicrously expensive! I'll just buy a few when I pop back to the UK and and them to my ever growing stash for next winter.

      @TonySaunders@TonySaunders3 жыл бұрын
    • @@TonySaunders sounds like a good plan to me. Interior kits are very expensive indeed but they are justifiable due to the tons of parts. Also good lack with the Bradley 😀

    • @@GeorgeModellingforBeginners I've already assembled it since my reply. Just need to get some practice in with my airbrush before I attempt to paint it. Hoping it turns out good, but if not I'm sure I'll learn a few things from the process 😃

  • an awesome kit! However, it would seem that in some parts of the video the footage appears 'blurry' or out of focus. Could be improved?

    @dragonkrone5822@dragonkrone58223 жыл бұрын
    • Thank you. Unfortunately the blurring occurred during the capture of the videos. The grey plastic apparently make it hard for the camera focus due to the shine. I will try to improve but once the parts will be painted it will be easier.

  • I have this exact kit, along with ryefield 5003 abt 503 full interior kit. And I'm getting the itch to start my 1st ever full interior kit. Either the meng ft17 full interior, this one or a tamiya kit? Idk? But I do know I want to build one, but I'm scared I'll screw up those lovely, but expensive interior kits. These videos will help. How long have you been building? I just hot back in to te hobby from a 30 yr absence

    • I am only building for 4 years and I started my first full interior kit one year ago (RFM Tiger I). I am not gonna lie, it is quite tedious process, you have to be very careful, there are no hidden places therefore you have to paint both sides etc. Having said that, you have to try it for yourself as the anticipation fear is the worst. Also try to keep your motivation levels as high as possible and concentrate to the build. Anyway, good luck with yours, whatever you choose. I would probably go for the Tamiya kit as the Meng FT-17 should be tiny and might get frustrated.

  • This is one kit that they should have included some “gimmicks.” Like all hatches and doors with working hinges. If they can do goofy recoiling guns, then why not?

    @TheSaturnV@TheSaturnV2 жыл бұрын
    • Totally agree and workable hatches were going to make my life easier when painting. Also I never realised that the gun was supposed to recoil (mine was too tight anyway).

  • Kit makers continue to misuse PE, as seen here on the rear stowage rack supports (too thin) and then turn around and make the jerry can handles out of clunky plastic. It should be a real easy formula: Only use PE if something is made from sheetmetal.

    @TheSaturnV@TheSaturnV3 жыл бұрын
    • Totally agree with you. Also the rear stowage rack supports was a pain and look bad in my opinion.

  • Curious, the kit I bought has the typical Rye Field Orange/Tan sprues. This one looks like green/grey plastic. Any reason for the differences?

    @pilotcirwin@pilotcirwin3 жыл бұрын
    • They sometimes switch their plastic color. Should be the same kit though

    • The RFM Tiger I had this orange/tan sprues. I remember I had some small issues with it as the cement discoloured the plastic and also it was quite brittle. The RFM Sherman (grey sprues) has has excellent plastic in my opinion but it is quite soft. I am curious to learn how your Sherman is with the tan sprues. Is the colour of the RFM sprues affect the quality of the plastic?

  • Although I've been scale-modeling for years and years, and while I left it for a while, I've recently got back into it, especially with the lock-downs. I've been using CA glue for pretty-much everything since getting back in, and I have a rather rudimentary question. I see many modelers, including yourself, using Tamiya Extra-Thin glue. Here's my question. When much younger, I used mainly Testor's in the old "squeeze tube," and found that after a few years, (or less,) the glue would no longer hold, and parts, especially if bumped, would easily fall or crack off. Do you, or anybody here, have experience with the longevity of the Tamiya Extra-Thin? Does it seem to hold up well for long periods of time. I like the way it applies, but I don't want to forgo the CA if it doesn't hold up! (BTW, I've bought this kit, and am about to start on it. It looks to be a great-quality kit from what I can tell so far!!)

    @gac914@gac9142 жыл бұрын
    • From my experience any cement should hold off indefinitely as it melts tha plastic rather than glue. I modelling for only 5 years therefore I do not know anything about the Testor glue. I use Tamiya extra thin for about 80% of the build. I would recommend a slow drying cement (like revell contacta) when gluing large parts. Do not use CA glue on plastic except when glue painted parts or photoetched.

      @GeorgeModellingforBeginners@GeorgeModellingforBeginners2 жыл бұрын
    • There are several types of ca glue I have a black one,which takes longer to dry,so easier to position parts,cleans up nicely with a retarder. Only really useful for photo etch. If you are still not happy with the tamiya extra thin,there is a plumbers glue called MEK which is very strong,it flows like water.(meta ethyl ketone)? Good luck, 😎❤✌

    • Thanks for your constructive critic. Yes I am aware of this issue and try to rectify it. I am about to purchase some softbox lights and hopefully will solve that. The truth is that in this particular kit, the light grey is extremely reflective and makes everything else distorted. For example the background is actually black!
