That’s a very vulnerable time for the cat but they feel safe with humans near their litter. That in my opinion can’t get any more domesticated than that 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🤔

  • That is one amazing squirrel. It zigzagged towards the tree, because it knew that it couldn't outrun the cat. Squirrel is more agile, but not faster, so it made the right decision. And damn, that was amazing.

    @michaelsong5555@michaelsong55554 жыл бұрын
    • Actually, it's agile & fast at both. Aside of cat's hunting abilities, squirrel are more knows about their own abilities. Usually, any prey run away for their own lifes on the line. But squirrel moved right to a tree behind cat. And it moved way too good. Sometimes, even squirrel are trying to hunt back cat, and this is no joke. Under such thought, it was look like they are trolling cats on purpose. You could say, squirrels are not afraid of being hunted by cats, even if cats wishes to hunt and eat them, squirrels are kinda interesting animals...

    • +Dominik Sobolewski...If that cat was a little younger and a little lighter, he woulda had that squirrel.

      @tommywright8369@tommywright83697 жыл бұрын
    • @Ehsan Ag: Not correct. The cat did everything right from his understanding, but so did the squirrel. Upon attacking the cat made an assumption that the squirrel would do the tactically correct thing, which would be to get off of the direct line of attack. So, the cat waited for a turn left or a turn right. But because the squirrel, instead chose to run the opposite direction for a couple of steps, which tactically is the wrong thing to do. Think passing the baton at the Olympics. The guy who starts accelerating always gets run down by the person who already has the speed. But in the case that you can't go left or right and let the cat fly by, you have to do what you have to do. By the squirrel choosing that direction, it forced the cat to relinquish his position of waiting for a left or right move and forced him to advance forward more. This is what the squirrel wanted because by making the cat move straight is what opened up the left and right side. Then, the squirrel simply backed the cat away with a zigzag motion to open up a lane to the tree. The squirrel actually turns the corner on the right side and could have made a break for it, but it wanted the tree instead. It happens in basketball all the time, that's why you have to always know where the basket is behind you when you're guarding someone. Otherwise they can do the same thing and get an easy layup. The difference between what big cats hunt, like leopards and little cats hunt is agility. That means a quicker harder prey to catch from the initial moment. The leopards prey can't accelerate or turn like a squirrel so leopards can just go in and get the kill. Squirrels are too fast for that, you need to get them into the open and use you speed to catch them. Only the squirrel refused to make a long straight away sprint, it instead chose the zigzag and escaped. Both did a great job, but squirrels practice chasing each other all day, so the cat needs more experience in guarding the tree, anticipating where the squirrel wants to go so he can block it and forcing the long run so he can run him down.

  • The cat's greater top speed was nullified by the squirrel's superior ability to accelerate in a new direction, each time inching closer to the tree in the process. It used superior tactics (changing direction) in the service of a winning strategy (getting up the tree). Note the squirrel climbed up the tree from the opposite side so the cat would lose sight and could not lunge. If I was that squirrel I doubt I would have been so clever and cool under pressure.

  • You people are missing the point. Think of it on terms of statistics, a predator in the wild is never 100% successful during a hunt, but that doesn't mean they aren't still a predator when they miss. The cat displayed amazing hunting skills and we forget our house cats have been domesticated for far less time than dogs. Our housecats have a ton in common with wild panthers, tigers and lions in terms of demeanor and hunting skills.

My first time watching him hunt I was thinking, "there is no way all that fat could move quick enough to catch a leaf blowing in the wind". Boy, was i wrong, as fast as lightning, the cat had a bird, which it immediately brought it home and let it loose in their home. LOL!!!

    • Brian Yach Yeah, cats like to "teach" their owners how to catch food so they bring whatever they've caught to show how it's done.. that's what they would do for their kittens.By the way, it's a little amusing for me that some folks think that Peikko the cat in this video is fat...LOL. It's one of the smallest adult cats that I've seen...:) Her sister weighs 1.5 times more, for example. But she don't mind, she got famous for that squirrel hunt! :)

  • That squirrel had an excellent evasion strategy. From a startled position it quickly recovered creating space between itself and the cat. It then executed a perfect zigzag pattern edging closer to the tree at each angle. The last "zig" baited the cat away from the tree making the subsequent "zag" an easy route to safety.

  • Average cat moves at around 30 MPH when it brings up speed in a straight line. Acceleration takes a little bit before they reach that speed, and that's without stopping. Squirrels clock in at only 20 MPH, but their acceleration from a stop is about 5 times faster than a cat, so they can basically stop and get up to full speed so much quicker, which makes them extremely hard to catch. The only time a cat catches a squirrel is when the squirrel messes up a turn and runs RIGHT into the cat which was actually behind on acceleration. On other words, cats don't catch squirrels, squirrels run into cats during a chase. Also it's been recorded that the max speed a squirrel can go, based on survival instinct from being prey, which always produces more adrenaline, was recorded at 36 MPH. Most domestic cats only run at 30 mph when they are also "prey". If the mighty Cooper's Hawk can't catch a squirrel easily, you can be sure as hell a cat is going to have a tougher time.

    • Your premise doesn't stand up. A hawk has only one chance: mess that up and there's no second chance. Cats, on the other hand, can stop and start multiple times, and can climb trees almost as fast as squirrels. I'd say the two animals have an equal chance of catching a squirrel.
