  • Slater wants to go out on a high note! Thought that he was going to retire after winning pipeline, but who’s going to retire after winning the first event of the year? Knowing that John John has the jersey number 12 you know he’s got a win one more title. But that vision is getting out of sight so he’s hoping to try to get wildcard into and win one more event to hang up the jersey. I’m sure of that. Definitely hoping to get into the final Tahiti with John John. Would be an all-time banger.

    • I’ve been a bit mystified at the judging this year. I know it’s not an easy job. Best I can gather they are not scoring floaters, cutbacks, roundhouses... they want to see the rail gouge with big spray. Even airs not really being scored see Medina’s tail high move at Bells that didn’t even make it in his top 2.

      @springfieldbearpatrol2937@springfieldbearpatrol293714 күн бұрын
    • Yeah agreed. They just want everyone to be Ethan which is silly versus if that's all that is scored, that is all we are going to get.@@springfieldbearpatrol2937

  • People seem confused about Kelly’s status. He’s not officially retired as a pro surfer. The WSL has a mid-season cut and that sends the lower ranked CT (Championship Tour) level surfers back to the QS (qualifying series). Thus they cannot continue on the 2024 World Tour or compete for a World Title - but they do have the right to try to re-qualify for 2025 via the Challenger events. In this case it’s like Babe Ruth being sent to the minor leagues. Kelly was also granted two wildcards for CT events remaining (Fiji and Tahiti) by virtue of being a former Title holder. Personally I still enjoy watching Kelly and will be rooting for him to requalify, but he doesn’t prove anything to anybody.

  • dumpty surfs good, but he lifts his board up and places it down and does like a weird wheelie just before he goes to the rebound, i’ve always seen this in contest here in florida too.. and my friends will think i’m hating , but im not at all, and this heat he is doin it more than even alot of other heats.. idk maybe some thinks its good but to me its not flow , and its a hesitation instead of a smooth full rebound , or am i trippin?

    @jeffcrego@jeffcrego14 күн бұрын
  • Looking back yea I'm afraid so, Kelly was ingaging, working the wave noticeably at a more intense level. We know judges can miss some, it's ashamed they missed this one so badly thou. Even removing the "fan favorite" filter it wasn't close. I'm sure the winner didn't want to win that way either 🐿

    @Austongold@Austongold14 күн бұрын
  • This some GRADE A BS... WSL judging went to pot long ago, and here's another prime example. The skill it takes to surf that smooth and technical is what makes Slater the GOAT. KELLY, PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS SURFING, START A NEW TOUR!

  • I don't understand why is Slater competing on a CS event 1 week after the retirement announcement. I get the world champs heat.. I get the wild cards for the CT. But this seems wrong. • Ha. Or a CI. He’s been on these smaller boards for years and he looks like he’s having fun, and they have such a short rail line it allows tight arcs - I do notice he bleeds speed on occasion. I think most of us old heads are used to iconic Kelly on longer boards with the quick logo.

  • What does Slater have to do to win a heat? What is the WSL criteria for judges? Don't they take into consideration flow, power, grace, fluidity or is just repetition and quantity of maneuvers. I don't understand the judging. Kelly killed out there, and schooled everyone on the beach, in the water or at home on their computer.

If a "young guy" cant advance against Kelly, he should not get the nod to be on the Challenger series or Champion Series it's that simple.
