After flying too close to an osprey's nest, a Great Blue Heron is chased off by a brave osprey parent.

Having been in the avian field now for the better part of 35yrs. And working "hands on" with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey. I can honestly say this attack happened for one of two reasons. Territory protection of the Osprey towards the Heron and secondly predation from the Heron towards the Osprey's chicks. Heron's are notorious for eating just about ANYTHING they can fit down their throats. They have VERY formidable dagger like beaks and one or two strikes and it's all over for their given prey. While out in the field i've seen them eating full grown rabbits whole, chicks of other birds, even small ducks, water rats, you name it they'll try and eat it. So this wasn't a scenario where the Osprey was looking at the Heron as a kill. Considering it knows what the Heron is capable of being 2x it's size. It was too protect it's chicks from becoming a meal for the Heron or simply didn't like it in it's fishing territory.

Since I live in Florida, I can easily say that this wasn't a predatory attack. Osprey are normally ok with other fish eating birds in their territory so most likely the heron simply got too close to it's nest. Plus herons are known to eat baby birds so I wouldn't put it past it that it was trying to eat the young raptors.

Nice to see an Osprey not being bullied for once. I swear Ospreys grow to be as big or bigger than even the largest hawks and their talons seem as though they would inflict SERIOUS damage. Yet they get little respect from other raptors/pelicans/herons. It's amazing how much better the Ospreys are than the rest of the fish eating raptors as far as success rate. Maybe it's so easy for them they haven't evolved the need to be fighters. Ospreys seem to be everywhere there is water around.
