Forge Welding a Damascus billet with the Hydraulic Press

More tests with the video camera and to see how the directional microphone handles the Hydraulic Press. A few focus issues and unable to get great shots of inside of the forge. I was hoping to see the flux bubbling on the steel.
Forge welding a Damascus billet of 1095 and 15N20 I had started a few months ago. Drew out the bar to approximately 12 inches and performed a 45 degree turn to create a wavy pattern from the straight lines. The billet will be cut and restacked to create a W pattern that can be made into more complex patterns.

  • Hi there. May I ask you how many tons your press is? Thank you. :)

    • Hi Alessandro, this is the 16 ton press from coal ironworks. You can see a slight delay in pressure building, the pump was actually defective at this time, I reached out and they sent me a new one so after that it worked better than this video shows. I'll have more videos of the press in action as I get back up and running again in the coming weeks.

    • @@mythicforge5874 I see. I live in Europe and I'm going to build one myself, so I'm trying to figure out how many tons I would need to do forge some Damascus. ;) Thank you for the information, appreciated it! Looking forward for your new videos. :) All the best and stay safe!

    • No problem, good luck, I've seen several models from other manufacturers that are also 16 tons, it works well. I've also seen some that go up to 25 tons. If you shoot for something within that range you will be able to do damascus no problem.

    • @@mythicforge5874 Indeed I've found a company who sell this kind of stuff. Probably I'll go for a 20tons hydraulic system (with motor and everything I need) and I just need to build the frame; Thinking to an H shape, so I can have access to both sides according to what I need to do and the dies are mounted. :) Cheers!

    • @@mythicforge5874 kzhead.info/sun/fMmBY8t5fp2brH0/bejne.html This is the one I was inspired by. I thought that 40tons was actually too much, but the frame's building is pretty good to start from. :)
