00:00 Menswear to Skip Introduction
Building a wardrobe and developing your personal style is a journey, and just like any journey, you may come along with things that you like at a time, but they won’t work for you later on.
As we go on a journey, when it comes to clothes, instead of shedding ourselves of our old skin, clothes just keep piling up and staying with us in our closets. The problem is: not only would these pieces be better off with someone else who would actually wear and appreciate them, but those pieces also detract from the things you actually want to wear, but maybe you just can’t see!
00:56 1. Your First Black Suit
You probably realized that a black suit and a white shirt and maybe a red tie, or something else that’s really bold, was pretty much the only combination you could wear. Because even with a light blue shirt, the black suit just looks weird.
03:41 2. That Garment You're Still "Meaning To Wear"
We all have a piece that we once bought that was a little bolder and more daring, and we thought looked really handsome.
05:54 3. "Goal" Items
They’re just in the wrong size, they don’t fit you, and you always hope that you get there, but you, in fact, haven’t.
07:16 4. That Great Deal...With The Tags Still On
The problem is we often look at the initial cost rather than the cost per wear.
08:10 5. Hawaiian Shirt
Unless you live in Hawaii or in a similar environment where you can wear it often. It’s a classic menswear item, but it has been abused for “business casual Fridays” and “business casual every day.”
08:48 6. Square-Toed Shoes
There’s sentimental value, and it’s hard to part with something that served you as a stepping stone and that, maybe, you have memories attached to. But, frankly, it’s time to go for these shoes.
10:23 7. Novelty And Bold Ties
We love vintage ties, and their very classic, sophisticated pattern. But then there’s also the color palette of ties that is really bold and just odd.
11:24 8. Worn-Out Items
You probably should also say goodbye to items you enjoyed wearing and love but are now frayed and simply worn out.
12:26 9. Bold & Jewel-Toned Shirts
Chances are when you first learned about dress shirts, you were enamored with bold-colored blue, purple, or turquoise shirts. And we liked red or deep maroon or shiny black in kind of polyester blends that just looked flashy.
13:26 10. That Faux Leather Jacket
You may have gotten a real leather jacket, but the cut was just baggy and saggy, and it’s just not flattering at all.

He bought 3 new tailored suits and a tux and looks great when we go to more dressy events. We were dressing up for Halloween and since he is tall, we went for a Frankenstein's monster/Bride of Frankenstein theme. I wanted one of his old suit jackets that we could pad out the shoulders for the Monster to wear. We couldn't find one in time. Oh well.

  • I love the shout out to Hawaii! As a Hawaiian sartorial dresser, I love seeing vintage Hawaiian photos with classic summer-weight fabric suits/ensembles and straw hats. Unfortunately those days have passed, but one thing I would like to point out about the video is that the genre of "Hawaiian shirts" or "Aloha Shirts" is actually quite diverse. There is a hierarchy of fabric quality, pattern/design, and cuts. These shirts have quite a history that is unique to our state, which is why it feels culturally "out of context" elsewhere in the world. I learned this the hard way myself! On one end, some Aloha shirts are designed to look very professional and "classic," while others on the other end of the spectrum are designed for tourists/parties. Understanding the spectrum of nuance - which types of shirt are acceptable given the situation and one's role in it - is key in Hawaii. Additionally, we started Aloha Friday (the tradition of wearing aloha shirts to work on Fridays) to help support our local textile industry, which has, unfortunately, shrunk considerably. I would say that anyone who has graced our shores and truly appreciates the ʻĀina and our way of life should pick one up. There's even a style that would suit gentlemen such as yourself!

    • I was over 200 shirts at one point, but I've culled severely and risen back into the low 100s. I wear them daily (In Nebraska) and after 20-odd years of collecting I only buy a new shirt if it meets my quality criteria. Obviously, not for everybody. But as this channel has said before, wearing a quality garment with confidence is sometimes all you need.

As soon as I came across this channel, I started my journey of phasing out the cheap clothes and have almost gotten rid of all of them. But I gave a good deal of the wearable stuff to a friend of mine who is also starting out in classic menswear, so he can upgrade as he goes too.

  • I bought a beautiful (and expensive) black suit and had a tailor finish the trousers and adjust the jacket. When I collected it, I brought it in its suit holder back to the office. When I arrived, my colleagues told me that there had just been an announcement that the office was going business casual, and formal suits and ties were being actively discouraged. So the suit still sits in my wardrobe. I've never worn it. As I bought it 1999 it has the high gorge, 3 button style of the day that would look very dated today. What a waste of money .... The only other thing I ever bought that went to the charity shop unworn was a printed orange shirt that I liked, but just didn't have the balls to wear out. Being older now, I'd wear it as I don't care what people think to the degree that I did as a younger man in my early 20's. You live. You learn

Onde moro atualmente, claro que não gasto 300/400€ num Allen Edmonds, mas como minha mentalidade mudou e aprendi um pouco a reconhecer qualidade, fujo dos sapatos de 10€. I bought them from my local Sears as my first professional garment along with a pair of polyester pants. Since then I’ve added more clothes with natural fibers, mostly preowned from thrift stores and online marketplaces; alas, clothes made of natural fibers are just too expensive for me at full price but I completely understand why they are so highly valued.

  • I'd argue the fact that style and confidence merges in a way that creates such subjectivity and opinion that it boils down to this: wear it if you like it and makes you confident, let it go if it doesn't. You can see this holds true even to him as his opinion of his own changes over time along with what's popular and unique design preferences

  • I have 1 pair of trousers that are 32" waist and a Harris Tweed jacket that doesn't quite fit around the middle, they were tailored to fit when I was about 27 and they also cost a small fortune at the time and after a long battle with weight (300 pounds to 185 pounds) I keep these items in the wardrobe as I live and hope that I will fit into them again, It will feel like closure of my weight troubles. just before the pandemic, I was so close, about 3 pounds away from fitting into them comfortably, now after a bead few months I'm an extra 4- 5 pounds on top of that I was nearly close to giving up. But now after losing a few pound I'm confident that I'm back on track, so I'm just not ready to give up on them just yet, especially when I feel I'm so close to my target weight. My deal is, If I'm not at my target weight by the end of the year. The items of clothing will go to my local clothing charity. The clothes will be 15 years old by then and If I don't fit into them after all that time, might as well swallow my pride and get rid.

I agree that it looks too bold for dress shirts though and I'd steer well clear if I was buying a formal shirt!

  • I agree with most of these but definitely NOT the Hawaiian shirt one. I wear those almost exclusively when the weather permits. Not the neon super bright touristy ones, but rather the "made in Hawaii with real coconut buttons and matching pocket in a floral pattern" ones. BTW - Thanks for showing Elvis in the example. He looks great in those (but he looks great in about anything).

    • Yes I strongly disagreed on that one too! I would have made a special video on Hawaiian shirts that work and ones that don't work instead of a blanket condemnation.

  • i bought a lot of shirts when i went to college, mostly pin-stripe in white and very light blue.. i was really into relaxed fit back then, so i bought those shirts 1-2 size larger than what my body was.. i ended up not wearing them after a semester as the more fitted look became all the rage in the 2010s.. and now as my body getting larger, i start wearing them again.. luckily, most of them are still in a good condition due to the lack of wear.. so i guess you can dress for the body you don't have.. YET 😂 anyway, great video as always!

  • I have a v neck shirt in heather grey that is made out of a very specific cotton blend that I’ve never been able to find anywhere else. This thing is the softest material I’ve ever felt. Softer than cashmere or silk. It has holes in it but I refuse to throw it away. I wear it with things layered to cover the holes.

  • I agree with all of these in principle. For me personally, though, there are a few of these guidelines that I would pass on. I have a few loud ties and I also have a bunch of Hawaiian shirts and I wear them all because they kind of fit my goofy personality. If I’m in a goofy mood or having a fun day, I’ll put on one of those loud ties or aloha/Hawaiian shirts. Of course, if the situation calls for more traditional menswear, then I will wear that - and wear it well.

  • I enjoy your videos and the way you present these subjects. I've always liked the color blue, but not just any old blue. I wear indigo colored Levi's with Tecovas boots. These boots are of superb quality and handmade in Mexico. I get compliments on my boots quite frequently and wonder, why more people don't wear quality footwear, instead of tennis shoes. The cost is around $260 and they are so fine looking that i bought a second pair in brown. The first thing I notice about someone is the shoes there wearing. If I see someone with boots that aren't laced up, the first impression i get, is you don't care about much of anything.

The only dark shirts I wear now are navy blue, but even that is a little hard to pull off.

But I wouldn't agree to the point about bold coloured dress shirts, or to be precise, I wouldn't agree to 100%. As I am on the dandy side of menswear it's something I like and wear since years, because it gives the outfit the little extra. But I would agree that it's not the right kind of shirt for an formal outfit.

I am glad I loaded up when I did. the whole skinny/stretch thing happened and now mens ware has gone full on fast fashion. So, good luck finding dress pants that are this well made. Also, black suits have a time and place. Just keep them in their lane.

  • Sorry, I couldn't wait until the end of the video to say that sometimes the best thing about these videos is when Raphael throws some shade at Preston! LOL! Seriously, though, your piece on confidence was very important to me. A confident man is not afraid to poke fun at himself. Kind of like how, even if you want to dress nicely, there's still room for casual wear, talking seriously about something doesn't mean you still can't be funny here and there. It's all about finding that balance!

  • A portion of this video also applies to brand new [with tags still on] unworn athletic clothing. In 2019 at Walmart, I bought a bunch matching set of Russel Athletic Dri power work out outfits. One was set was in maroon color and then other was dark green. I bought matching Adidas shoes maroon shoes and Adidas green shoes go with it and I still haven't ever wore these outfits. The maroon shoes are still in the box. To this day they both make for great causual outfits, it just these colors conflict with my go to colors which are bright colors. When you live in Florida bright colors on warm or hot sunny day go hand in hand, like on the weekends my colors are light blue, dark blue, light grey, white and primarily pink. Poor maroon just can't get a weekend day. This month lime green is in. I making room in athletic outfits in bright red. The green Adidas that were all kept in a box I finally wore them a couple of weeks ago with my lime green mesh shorts and matching lime shirt.
