  • Thank you, Tom, for interviewing Dr. Khalidi. Your enthusiasm, Tom, towards the information in the book, as well as the mutual respect towards one another, was heartfelt. I am excited about reading the book, so, I, too, can intelligently, and calmly, discuss the issues that many people say is "too complicated" to understand. Perhaps that's just a dismissive excuse to avoid a pertinent conversation.

    • @@den264 Truth by omission you mean. He left out key facts that vilifies Isreal. For instance, Israel did not "invade" Lebanon for no reason. It began with an attempted assassination of the Israeli ambassador in London, Israel attacked PLO targets in Lebanon on June 4, 1982. The PLO responded with rocket and artillery barrages, and Israel retaliated by sending ground troops into Lebanon, in a mission titled “Operation Peace for the Galilee.” There's always "cause and effect", lots of "effects" being mentioned here with the "cause" intentionally left out. Only idiots never ask "why".

    • @@bri_____1970And he is telling of weaponed power of Israelis, but do not mention the fact that in1948 the biggest and most powerful Arab states started big war against new established state, it was not Arabs of Palestine who fought, it was Transjordan, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt. Saudi Arabia, Yemen. United Arab whose forces was double of Israelis. USA didn't supplied Israel with weapon, it was bought from Czech Republic, remnants of old weapons after the war between the USSR and Germany, and everything that could be bought from private sellers of weapons. Israelis was poorly weapons, in the minority, but it was the question of existence, and they won. From Khalidi I did not hear anything near the truth. The result was Israelis gaining of some territories in accordance of international war right as far as the Arabs started it and lost. The other parts of Palestine was taken av Egypt and Jordan, and it was no longer the will of Arabs of Palestine to establish of own start. So it was until in 1968 Arab countries decided to get rid of this tiny problem - Israel. And lost again. I doubt that he does know nothing of it. He just does not give the all facts. Why? The same with other episodes: not whole truth. I am so sorry, because he is not the worst of those who present the story of questions of this region. I expected more honesty, really, from a decent man.

  • “I want my legs back,” the girl cried in Arabic. “I want my legs back.” You can’t have your legs back, little girl. They have been eaten by a hungry machine who needs them for fuel to power its gears. The machine needs your legs to keep the sky raining bombs and to make its death robots fly. Your legs power the bulldozers digging mass graves and the tanks blowing holes in the hospitals. A glorious kingdom is held together by the amputated limbs of children. A pentagon-shaped castle is built from the bones of the amputated limbs of children. Wall Street werewolves and bank boys dine on the amputated limbs of children. Movie stars treat their wrinkles with creams made from the amputated limbs of children. Suburban families prop up their smiles with the amputated limbs of children. The news man lies and in his eyes you see the amputated limbs of children. The podium man smirks and between his teeth are the amputated limbs of children. And the little girl cries, and the news man ignores her, and the podium man smirks at her, and the bank boy bites her, and the machine rolls on, limbs fed into its furnace with pitchforks, crushing houses and blackening the sky, poisoning the oceans and bloodying the earth, while the air fills with the crying of children, for limbs that will never come back, for homes that will never come back, for mothers that will never come back, for childhoods that will never come back, for brightness that will never come back, for innocence that will never come back, for dreams that will never come back, for joy that will never come back. • @@rolandthethompsongunner64 You did miss something. Prof Khalidi described why the Palestinians are resisting Israeli, and it's not because they're Jews. He uses the hypothetical of Nationalist Danes invading Palestinian lands instead of the Zionists. The Palestinians wouldn't resist based on religion (roughly 20% of Palestinians are Christians), but because resistance to land theft is a natural response to others stealing your land. And your implication that "Muslims" groom their children is rather Islamophobic, and wrong historically. Again, Palestinians are resisting their Occupation, just as the Irish resisted the British occupation. Religion is incidental (though making a good dividing line for lazy thinkers.)

  • It is very rare to hear a Palestinian speaking without hatred about the conflict. We need to dispassionate the debate to see things right. To start to trust each other. Lack of trust is at the root of the problem. A one state solution could be possible giving equal rights for both people if we feel that the will to leave is stronger than the will to die for political or nationalist reasons. These two people have a common ancestor and they could show that their union could make them stronger and better

But 250 years of slavery, that did happen in the U.S., is rarely discussed and is actively shunned in some places. There are significantly more holocaust museums and monuments in the U.S. than museums and monuments re. slavery.

  • Something interesting that I’ve observed about this conflict is that there is little regard given towards the “native” Jewish population that we know had continual existence in the land throughout all of the conquests over the last 2000 years. I think this is fascinating because while some people use Zionism to frame the situation as colonial, the existing minority makes the endeavour repatriation. Nothing is ever put forward to suggest whether the native Jews also saw the Zionists as coloniser others, or whether they saw it as the diaspora helping free them from (an extended timeline wise) the remnants of past colonial efforts. The second thing that also makes the conversation interesting is that the Arabs are taken to be natives despite there being a lot of migration under mandate and the ottomans. Why does their increase in population (granted smaller, but also UNRESTRICTED) via migration never come up in these conversations. The territory is far more nuanced than most academics will say. The weird thing is, picking sides is the problem in this conflict.

    • @@bosnianlady10 Genocide is bad, yes. Does a war campaign automatically equal genocide? People have a right of return? Ok. Did the European Jews have a right of return also, or do you see it as colonialism? Why the distinction? Muslim rule caused the Jewish and Christian populations to dwindle. Apartheid is bad. So far the only place where this regime has been found is South Africa. It is not enough for the state to have different rules for its citizens vs non-citizens (every country does: eg. I live in the U.K. on a visa and I am not entitled to benefits, whereas all British citizens are). To say it’s apartheid is also to say there’s only one state from the river to the sea - Israel - and is itself a denial of Palestinian statehood in a portion of the land. Colonialism bad. Yes. So you hate the Arab conquests that put the Arab Muslims in the region in the first place, right? We’re on the same page. Great.

      @zosiawane8235@zosiawane823527 күн бұрын
    • @@zosiawane8235 Unlike you, I can say all those things are bad without being biased. Whoever does it , it’s bad. No exceptions. My people were colonized by Ottomans, that was bad. It was not the worst colonialism in history but no one wants overlords. Israel is not just a colonial state, they are a settle colonial state, which means people will be displaced. So great we agree colonialism is bad, who ever does it. As for Apartheid, most human rights groups have said that Israel has an Apartheid. Having two different license plates, two different freeways and a law that clearly says Jewish ethnicity is superior are all evidence of apartheid. Thousands of Palestinians have lost their right to live there just for living abroad for few years, while Jews living in Texas and have no family ties to Isreal are offered paid tours to persuade them to come with full citizenship promised. Laws make it clear that Jews are regarded as a superior ethnicity explicitly underlining that “ Israel is the historic homeland of the Jewish people and they have an exclusive right to national self-determination in it”. As for Genocide , it’s true that a war doesn’t make genocide automatic. But when you cut water, electricity, food, medicine….that is. When you destroy most of the homes, roads, educational, medical, cemeteries and openly talk about killing all people, then it is. "There are no innocent civilians in Gaza," Herzog said. "Bring down buildings!! Bomb without distinction!! Stop with this impotence. You have ability. There is worldwide legitimacy! Flatten Gaza. Without mercy! This time, there is no room for mercy!," wished Revital Gottlieb, a member of the Israeli Knesset. "If all of Gaza are refugees, then let's scatter them in the world. There are 2.5m people there, each country would take in 20K people, 100 countries, it is humane, it is required," suggested Ram Ben Barak, member of the Israeli Knesset. That is ethnic cleansing which often accompanies genocide. Yeah people have right to return, what Israel is doing is only allowing anyone with a hint of Jewish ancestry to return. Jews posting their DNAs and being shocked that most of their genetics come from Europe and some none from Middle East , yet they get automatic entry. I was driven out of my home. One thing we got was right of return. Those that drove us out made it hard to regain back out homes, our land but we were lucky that we don’t have something like a Israeli lobby and the international community put pressure for right of return to be enforced.

  • Fine interview this ! Professor Khalidi is both deeply knowledgeable and articulate. And he has still managed to retain a charming middle Eastern inflection in his english despite living in America for many years :) However, i see such conversations, illuminating as they are, turning out to be echo chambers. It addresses audiences with preset leanings toward one or the other side. What we need are respectful two way dialogues (moderated with intelligence and sensitivity to both points of view) between people from opposite sides. In their meeting we could benefit from getting a glimpse of the big picture instead of getting lost in the little details. I would love to hear an exchange between Professor Khalidi and ,say, Einat Wilf who has painstakingly studied the Israeli- Palestinian situation from the vantage point of a government servant and has come to some powerful conclusions that cannot be discarded simply because they come from the Jewish - Israeli side of the debate. One observation : ~ While Prof Khalidi was right in pointing out the historical role of the Catholic Church in propagating antisemitism and Christian Europe as being the enablers of various pogroms against the Jewish people over time, he (conveniently) downplayed Islam's role in the persecution of Jews as well. The Prophet was not known to have had good relations with the jewish communities of the time. This sentiment slowly flowered into state sanctioned marginalization of the jewish people who were resident in the cities of the first Islamic caliphate and future Islamic kingdoms and empires across the world. Both Christianity and Islam have much to answer for the normalization and institutionalisation of antisemitism ~
