Michelle Obama on Barack Being Called “Fine,” Raising Their Daughters & Watching Trash TV

2022 ж. 11 Жел.
2 987 029 Рет қаралды

Former First Lady Michelle Obama talks about Barack thinking she watches too much low brow TV, there being some boring times in their house since the end of Barack’s presidency, decorating for Christmas and spending it in Hawaii, her first Christmas trip there to meet Barack’s family, taking Malia and Sasha to see Santa when they were younger, not being a big gift giving family, someone at a rally saying that Barack was “fine,” her new book “The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times,” her mom being an incredible force in her life, parenting tips and stories of raising her daughters, various “low points” as a parent, and Jimmy and Michelle exchange gifts for the holidays.

  • I miss having such a likable family in the White House. You may not agree with their politics but the Obamas were great, personable and charismatic people, almost felt like they were your friends.

It was hard for most Americans to look at that family look at the loyalty look at the values and not look around and go. Why the hell don’t I have that. And what’s on TV is trash, broken homes, broken relationships, fighting drama, drama drama and people love to watch trash TV. It’s why it always tops the ratings. They wanted to put something they love trash in the White House and after we got for four years after Obama left.

Nobody did anything in class that day and my teacher praised when we he won; such a great moment! Government and Econ class was history made when I started to take those classes the following year. I’m always so pleased to watch them especially because they’re SO normal! The President is so young, he listens to the same music I do, speaks the way I do. • Hard not to be protective when you've already lost a child, and I'm so sorry for your loss. I can tell you that I was the surviving sibling at the age of 14 with my dad's death to follow soon thereafter, on Christmas morning to be exact. I went through the same thing. You're catching this at the right time, though. My mother never did seem to learn what she was doing to me. I couldn't get out of the door to meet with friends without hearing at the last minute, "Don't be long."_ I felt like I was on a leash, and that she was jerking it every time I tried to leave the house. She just had to make sure I felt stifled, and I did. I loved her dearly, but she would call my friends and acquaintances to ask them not to put me in dangerous situations. I can't tell you how many times I heard, _"Betty, your mother called."_ The conversation that would follow was never good, as though I had something to do with it or even knew that it had happened. I must have apologized to people a thousand times over those years. I hid the names and phone numbers of new friends from her. I couldn't seem to stop her. She was crushing my spirit regularly in order to keep me safe. As I said, I loved her dearly. She was a person of fine character, so I'd hate for her to be judged solely for that departure from normal parenting. She just couldn't get out of the loop. It sounds like you can, so more power to you.

    • Well, the Obamas are just as American as you are. Hello? Not sure how many generations your family has been here. But my family, black, as been here longer than some white families. I appreciate the sentiment and I see where you're going. But we need to stop thinking that America is a WHITE country. Minorities built the railroads, picked the cotton that made white men wealthy, and they have contributed to the culture through food, dance, literature, education, medicine, you name it. I guess I'm just thrown by WHY you're surprised, or think it's so odd or out of the ordinary, that a black man makes you feel proud to be American. As if only white people make you feel American, or white people define what being American is. The last white man in the White House was anything but American - and over the next few months we will likely see how he was the biggest traitor this country has ever seen. But the racists white men in the south who LYNCHED blacks, killed so many, were anything BUT American. They refused to abide by the law because they didn't feel like it. And some STILL behave this way. I can't think of anything MORE unAmerican. If anything, blacks, and other minorities as well, have shown, through their resilience, just how much they love this country - it has been amply documented by history. So, it should be no surprise that, at this point in history, blacks are proud to be American and would inspire others to be their BEST American, too.
