Jeep XJ Time-lapse Engine Rebuild, 4.0L Stroked to 4.6L | Redline Rebuild
Our 1993 Jeep Cherokee Sport needed its tired engine rebuilt, so we figured why not give it a decent upgrade while we're at it? Of course, we wouldn't miss the opportunity to shoot time-lapse video of every step along the way and hit you with another amazing addition to our Redline Rebuild series! With help from our friends at RockAuto.com, we source a crankshaft and pistons from a different Jeep engine (4.2L) and stroke this XJ's legendary 4.0L straight-6 AMC engine to a slightly more powerful and torquey 4.6L.

if there was an “engine overhaul” category at the Oscars - ^^ this would take it all. Magnificent work Hagerty!
It would walk up to an LS on stage and slap the life out of it.
❤️
The jeep Cherokee is one of the greatest cars ever produced. I own an 89’ limited 4.0L and it’ll probably get me another 300,000 miles. Such a pleasure to drive, sticks to the road like glue and can make it over almost anything I put infront of it. Love cherokees so much.
i have the same model and year and mine just hit 600,000🙏😂
In my 4-5 years of viewing countless rebuild videos, I've not yet watched one that was this fun to watch.
It doesn’t matter which vehicle manufacturer you prefer, these are all great. Even the six cylinders are just as much fun to watch.

Cameraman, you always manage to work in a new kind of shot, stylistically. Your stuff never gets old.

👌👌👌👍👍👍👊
Couldnt agree more!
Very true....loved the unwrapping part the most❤️
We have a 10 year old girl and a 6 year old girl that loves watching your videos! And we can play them and walk away because I know there’s zero profanity, and it’s actually education and fun! Thanks for all you do!
It is a fascinating case study of an engine; thanks for taking on this project. For all of the prestige and allure of the American V8, there is not much more-American motor than a Jeep Six-Cylinder
Because it started as the American Motor Company I6
For what they were designed to do, they're wonderful engines. Much like the Chrysler Slant 6, they just run forever without much fuss - and now this particular one has been fortified with vitamins and iron! Very enjoyable as always *Davin* - can't wait to see what you tackle next. - Ed on the Ridge

those 4.0L jeep engines have their roots in the AMC 199 that was first used by Rambler in 1964. obviously certain revisions have been done, but the main architecture is the same. Which is why he was able to use a 258 crank. The Chrysler slant 6, the Ford 300, the Chevy stove bolt, and the AMC 258/jeep 4.0 are all amazingly durable and effective.
@@mindeloman most straight 6 (I6) are super durable. Most over the road Diesel engines are I6. They have 2 more mains than a v8. And more spinning mass to make power.
I guess I'm in the minority. I was head Jeep mechanic at a Chrysler/Jeep dealership back in the late 80's. This model jeep was declared the #1 most repaired vehicle by Consumer reports. They would pull in the shop and I could tell just by listening how much money I was going to make.
@@scottlasater4658 best suv ever for the money
Absolutely incredible! Ran a 93 XJ for 26 years. Bought 2001XJ six months later 👍. Long live the XJ ✌️
This reminds me of the saying, you aren't paying for my labor, you're paying me for my knowledge. For both the rebuild folks and the video editor.
I used to Build those Vehicles, In 1985 got hired at the age of 22... at the AMC plant/Willies PKWY, Toledo Ohio... One of my Favorite Jeep's, right Next to the J-20 Pick up!
Awesome! Reminds me of the much less technical re-build I helped my Dad with on a 1988 Cherokee when I was 8 years old. Priceless memory and thank you for the reminder!
Please give your cameraman/editor raises. This was the best build Timelapse I’ve ever seen!
Be sure to check out all the other Redline Rebuild videos if this is the first one you've seen!
@@Hagerty I will, but only if you give them raises, make sure to account for hyperinflation too :)
timelapse? there was even some stop motion in there! this took a WHILE to make for sure
that's cool, the 4L - 4.6L is and always will be a legend. Best engine from the Wrangler / Cherokee.
This is probably the most underrated stop motion channel on KZhead.
i did not see that coming, timelapse was great and i expected that, but proper stop motion like that takes forever
The John Rambo of vehicle engines. Great work, skill & talent.
There is something very special about the sound of a straight six. Really enjoy the content that David puts out, like the honest way he presents. And his obvious knowledge of what he does.
❤️
I can watch this again and again. well done mate 👍
❤️
This has to be one the cleanest XJs I’ve ever seen
Amazing rebuild and incredible time-lapse! WOW
Would these guys be willing to rebuild a 5.9 cummins diesel out of my 08 dodge ram
❤️
4:55, was expecting roller rockers. This video made me miss my 98' XJ Sport. The engine with simple oil changes would have lasted forever if the body didn't rust apart. RIP Black Thunder. Screenplay and chill tune made this a very fun watch even with the heartbreak.
Love this. The xj better stay stock and classic looking, such a clean unit
No me canso de ver sus videos, son un placer la prolijidad y dedicacion que ponen en sus trabajos me obligan a ver una y mil veces los mismo videos sin cansarme, saludos desde argentina💪🏼🇦🇷
Back in 99, I worked in a rural body shop. We rebuilt the body on a customer's low mileage '94, exactly like this one, but hunter green. One of Tech's actually talked the owner into selling it to him a few years later for $2,500! Wow!
That tape ain't gonna peel itself.... 2:51 - "actually..." Never stop loving these time-lapses!
It is great to watch you take on the stroker 4.6 build. I bet the Jeep owner is super happy.
This whole thing is a work piece of art. The engine, the skill, the camera man, the editing. Wow
Redline Rebuild is why I look forward to Mondays now. This build was very enjoyable to watch, thanks!
The attention to detail is from another planet. The shots of the masking tape getting unwrapped was mental. I was snobing the project cause it's not a European car but as soon as i saw the 6pot i knew i had to watch the whole series. Congratulations!
Right when you thought it could not get any better. Amazing job guys
Some sweet upgrades on that build! Double roller timing chain is a huge plus!
❤️
I've never seen pistons so happy 😊 in a fresh block! Look how they hop up and down!😅😆😂
For living in Michigan, the body on that Cherokee is in really nice shape. Another great video, thanks guy’s, I don’t care what vehicle one prefers, these videos make you like them all!
It’s actually a Colorado car! We bought it SPECIFICALLY because it WASN’T a Michigan car! 😆
This was and is one of my favorite engines I've ever dealt with. Easy to work with. Few failure points. Reliable to a fault. With 40 years of service the parts availability keeps them affordable to work with.
Now that's a proper exhaust note! Well done, gentlemen.
I hope one day my 91 XJ turns into that. The 93 is so nice. Well done.
I just love Cherokees. It’s such a shame that they are relatively rare in Germany and hence pretty expensive. Awesome built!
As an American, we should develope a exchange program. We supply jk's, in exchange for e30's 😁
@@sidewayzmike I'm 100% behind this
@@sidewayzmike Deal (coincidentally, my 944's new garage neighbour is a white two-door 323i, I guess that has to stay here, though).
Love what your doing! The classic V8 is right down my alley. Not sure if you’re interested but a series where you take newer vehicles, break them down and discover, discuss and correct poor engineering oversights, would be unbelievably valuable. Add some much needed mods and some flair to keep it interesting would be cool too. Anyhow thanks for your time and I hope this message reaches the minds that make it all happen. Thanks and I hope to watch your subscriber base grow more than ever. -AD
I'm not a mechanic, never was. I build sailing ships for a living. I find this work amazing! I would love to learn how to do some of this.
i did a 4.6 stroker in our XJ years ago. it made me love that rig. so much fun! we had 4.56 on 33" tires with an automatic. perfect!
This was fantastically done.
❤️
Videos like this make me happy. It makes me even happier to know that Hagerty does these rebuilds out of my home state of Michigan! Hell yeah!
This is such good editing. It keeps you interested the whole time. Hats off to these editors.
Been waiting for a Redline Rebuild of the Jeep 4.0 for some time and it's definitely well worth it! As always, I enjoyed the video so much. Keep up the great work!
❤️
Can you subscribe my channel please
Great time lapse video showing all the rebuild steps. Awesome. Thank you for sharing!
The way this engine sounds is perfect. I hope to do the same job when my Jeep needs it!
This is the best team, best channel, best everything to keep me working hard and do my best at the garage. Old School rules, passion for what we do, I think its a way of life just for a few. Congrats, and keep doing this amazing time lapse. Hugs and peace. Frank.
Ok, not only do i love to see an engine bored and rebuilt, but the editing here was fantastic! The camera panning during time-lapse and the way the tape balled itself up after paint, that was really cool to see. @Hagerty, you guys really keep the passion alive. And thank you @rockauto, I just spent nearly $2k with you guys in the past 3 months but it's the best $ I've spent 😂 can't wait till I can get my 4.0 looking this good ❤
This video production and camera work are amazing! Also, great work from the mechanic rebuilding it! Its a time lapse masterpiece.
This is what happens when you love your craft, outstanding.
I am 72 years of age...hope I can visit Traverse City one more time...Thanks for all You do.
Absolutely gorgeous. The damn pinnacle of art.
La prolijidad con la que trabajan es sorprendente, no me aburro de verlos
Love these time-lapse videos. Lots of cool production value here. That Jeep sounds pretty mean, too.
Really enjoyed this rebuild series...abd what a finale! certainly learning about engine components... 🥰
My XJ 4.0 had over heating issues and blew up on the interstate. I sold it for $250 to a junkyard. One of the biggest regrets of my life. I miss that Jeep so much.
Awesome...reminds me of when we rebuilt everything on a vehicle! This video is badass!
Honestly, professional work, and the editing is very wonderful, thank you for it
Just giving a new live for the good old classic. Amazing!
I could very well watch this several times. Super nice work.
Gotta say, the 4.0 jeep is a workhorse of a engine. Had a Cherokee just like this and that thing never failed me.
That generation of Jeep and that 4.0 i6 engine is legendary. Paint is in fantastic condition too
That cinematography was 12/10. Fantastic job!
Great video and nice to see you doing a six cylinder. I worked for AMC/Jeep 1976-1978 and my favorite was the CJ-7 with the straight six.
Well done. Big Jeep fan! My father had a 93 Cherokee Sport. Such a great vehicle, many fond memories. Love what you did to this truck, not to much, just perfect! Thanks for sharing.
BIG Respect for you and the team, Sir !!! 👏👏👏
Wonderful video and I appreciate the time going into every shot!
Outstanding!!! Looks so clean. A job well done.
the timelapse i fully expected and appreciated, but that stop motion on the tape pulling was awesome, didn't see that coming. awesome angles too.
OMG that sound + footage
You should make a video on how you make your Redline videos. I can't imagine how much patience they take to make!
This is better than Netflix or a Hollywood movie! Awesome video.
This is a masterful mix of camera and editing techniques made all the more impressive because one shot might take days or weeks. Bravo, my man. Bravo.
Another excellent video! I really enjoy looking at them. Keep making these great videos without letting our anxiety for more make you lower the quality.
That was a real treat. Great photog work, thanks for all the effort.
If there is any precious vintage car to restore in any corner of the world... You are the guys everyone should reach out !!!
Totally absorbing video series on a Jeep straight 6 4.0 to 4.6 such a treat and learning curve excellent
I sure hope mine starts that easy! I loved this series. 🇺🇸
ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY STUNNING PRODUCTION. THE 4.0 I6 IS THE SIMPLEST MOST RELIABLE AND STREAMLINE ENGINE KNOWN TO MAN! A+++ THIS HAD ME SMILING THE WHOLE TIME EDITOR NEEDS A RAISE!!
The AMC Kenosha 4.0 - nothing superfluous, nothing missing.
That is a work of art. I love my XJ! That rig is almost identical to mine, red, black fender trim, 2 door, except I have the back seat pop out windows, and tinted all around the back. Granted, my paint isn’t as good. The ‘87 has collected a lot of UV over the years! I should add, based on other comments, I bought mine in Wisconsin, but moved West so she’s never seen salt.
At my work we have a Roumaldes. He is a master in Land Rovers, and pull the whole underbody with engine and raising the cabin in 6 hours, and then next day changes the turbo, and day 3 lower everything back down and testing. He is an very quiet muscular Lithuania that works in Denmark, and his work it is all SO impressive to observe.
That Jeep Cherokee is still one of the best looking drives out there.
Engine and engine bay look great. Have fun!
My friend this was by far the most entertaining time-lapse vid I've seen in a whole long while. Very smooth editing.
Excellent work on the part of the videographer(s) and editors! The rolling tape!
These are so good it inspired me to film my own time-lapse rebuilding an engine and transmission. No where near this level, but it was fun to do. Almost done editing it!
That tape removal scene after the block paint job... **chef's kiss**
I say phenomenal!!! love every aspect of these videos and the final product
I gotta say, the production value on that was epic... well done
Good work! All around! Camera work, engine work. You guys killed it
Great job folks! You guys are so amazing people can’t stop adoring you.
Great work buddy, loved this whole series!
I built a 4.6 stroker about 6 years ago, I used the edelbroc aluminum head and it was a game changer.
One of the best and coolest, vehicles america has ever made!!
You guys are awesome....i love watching your engine rebuild videos...keep up the great work
Easter Egg: Time-lapse background music featuring some of David's voice clips
Haha! Glad you caught that!
Дуже приємно знов Вас бачити!))))
AH FINALLY IVE BEEN WAITING. Y'all killed it, as always!!
That engine looks delicious!!!! Bright shiny black
The Jeep 4.0L is legendary. They just run. And run. And run. I have personally seen a 4.0L from a 2004 TJ that was on it's third Jeep lol. No clue of the milage but it had been in two daily drivers and then transplanted into a dedicated off road rig without ever being rebuild. Smoked a little but still had plenty of power.
Nice Job Davin and crew !!!!
