The truth is in the history! Awolowo became self-centered at some point! But that being said, Awo and Akintola achieved something great for Nigeria and the yoruba!
Akintola, seemingly , was a very pragmatic politician with a gift of foresight. If only Chiefs Awolowo and Akintola, both of them great and eminent, could just close ranks, Yoruba would have advanced much more than this. Nigeria too would have progressed much.

It's unfortunate that we do not learn history as part of the educational curriculum in our schools. That's why we always have conflicting versions. Akintola is a villain if you ask an Awoist and Awolowo is too selfish and domineering if you ask an Akintola faithful. Same goes with the current politicians. Some see Tinubu as the ultimate leader while some see him as too selfish and domineering. Even though history depends on who is writing it, academic historians are in the best position to write our history as it is happening. With respect to this clip, the man was balanced in his opinion even though he may not have said what some of us expected, but he was full of praises for Awolowo. Nobody can change the regard and respect yorubas have for Awo.
Dr. Amos Amao I so much like your balanced analysis. Long life sir. How I wish we could have a conference in Yoruba land where people like you will be invited to enlighten us so that we can do a re-think and make amends for progress. Also, chief Obafemi Awolowo should have learnt a lesson from the Northern people's 'baa ko daya' election result and agree with Chief Akintola on the tripod system of rotation of leadership.

In as much as I agreed with his narrative of events, the fact is that Awolowo look beyond what the likes of Akintola were looking at. No region in Nigeria had that type of development the West were privileged to have due to visionary leadership provided by the ruling class then. If the Easterners had agreed to form coalition with the Westerners then, Nigeria would have been a better place compare to the born to rule leadership we're are experiencing now.

My Yoruba is not too good so pardon me for commenting in English. Let me first of all thank "Dr. Amoo" for sharing his views with Nigerians. Many things happened back in the 1960s that many of us knew nothing or very little about and have taken to believing many in-accurate versions of what actually happened. There are always two sides to any story. Despite the facts that Awolowo built all thing bright and beautiful in the city of Ibadan, the Ibadans never liked Awolowo. What has anyone from Ibadan added to what Awolowo built there? The first Nigerian to move the motion for independence in 1954 was the late Chief Anthony Eromosele Enahoro from Uromi in Edo state. Many of the older MPs then said we were not ready for independence and voted the motion down. The second Nigerian to move the motion for our independence was the late Samuel Ladoke Akintola in 1956. The motion was also voted down. The third Nigerian to move the motion for our independence was the late Remi Fani-Kayode in 1957 and it was finally adopted. Anyone in doubt can reach Femi Fani-Kayode about this. His father moved the third motion. The wives of Awolowo and Akintola were not the cause of the imbroglio between the two men. This is what some men cooked up. It is better to go the archive and check the documents for what really transpired. In an impeachment hearing, Akintola was charged with a). mal-administration, b). antiparty activities, and c). indiscipline. In his summation at the impeachment hearing, Akintola plead guilty to all charges and ask for forgiveness. 110 members heard the impeachment hearing. Two third of them must vote "YES" to convict Akintola. Out of the 110 members that heard the impeachment hearing, 89 voted "YES" to convict Akintola. Only 29 voted "NO". They then asked Akintola to resign but he refused. In order not to throw the West into bloody chaos, the peoples of the West decided to let Akintola finish his term and vote him out. But before his term expired in 1964, Akintola formed a new party the NNDP and allied with the North's NPC. That was how Balewa got a foothold in the West. The Federal government in collusion with Akintola rigged the 1964 premiership election in the West. And so, the peoples of the West decided and countered Akintola and Balewa with civil unrest "Operation Wetie" that eventually led to Akintola's death. The West under Awolowo was self sufficient and never needed anything from the Federal government back then. Rather, it was the Fed gov that needed financial help from the West. What Akintola and others brought to the West was reliance on mere HANDOUTS. That was the mentality that destroyed the once mighty and self-sufficient Western Region. And so today, all politians need do is give people some rice and yams and get their votes. The unfrotunate thing here is that the Yorubas have not leant any lesson from what happened back then. They are still very much playing the politics of "adiye dami logun nu, mafo leyin" otherwisw known as politics of bitterness. Despite Hubert Ogunde's song Yoruba ronu, the Yorubas were hell bent on destroying themselves and they did. What a pity! O mase o!

I wonder why many like you are reacting negatively to the late Awolowo. Awolowo came to this world a poor man, did his best to make western region better and left this world. You mention cocoa but how many cocoa farmers do you have in Ibadan back in the 1950s and 1960s? About 75% of western region cocoa came from the old Ondo province, Ekiti, Idanre and Akure areas. Since Awolowo left Ibadan, what has any Ibadan indigene from Omololu Olunloyo, Lam Adesina, Lamidi Adedibu, Rashid Ladoja, Adisa Akinloye, and Richard Akinjide done for Ibadan in term of infrastructure? What has Ajimobi done to improve Ibadan? Nothing! When Alao Akala from Ogbomosho was the governor of Oyo state, he paid some miscreants to destroy Awolowio's statue at the secretariat in Ibadan. Yoruba land is a great land with great people but you are destroying the great land with hatred. It all started when Shango was the Alafin. His plot to get Gbonka killed failed at Oja Akesan in Oyo and so, Shango hanged himself. Why do Yorubas hate themselves so much? The late Hubert Ogunde said, YORUBA ERONU. By now the Yorubas should have learnt great lessons from Shango's mistake and mistake made during Awolowo and Akintola imbroglio. Yoruba eronu yin, e para po, Oduduwa a gbe yin o!

Ayobami at least Awo did a lot for the Yoruba people even including minorities and igbos in the Western region Free education, scholarships, 1st television station in Africa, lst university in Nigeria with only Cocoa and Agriculture, what has any other Nigeria politician achieved even with our so called oil, since he died and left we have had jokers as leaders by the way l am igbo and give his due, yes he made mistakes he was human forgive him and move on.

My thoughts exactly! Because alot of our people don't do research, they just go by what they're being told. The only mistake Akintola did was, not to resign. He should have done the needful. Because majority of his party members voted against him. Other than that, everything he said about Ndigbos has come to pass. I.e. the first coup proved his point. Then, Yorubas and Hausas are in government together. So, Akintola wasn't entirely wrong. The truth is, Awolowo never rated the Northerners but Akintola like them. Awolowo liked Ndigbos. But Ndigbos betrayed him as well.
This man is just playing to the gallery. There was no genuine role but ceremonial role for president in the first republic! The problem is what did zik alliance bring to the east? There are some truths in what he is saying it was a feud caused by women.
I think this fellow presents a balanced portrayal of what transpired at the time. I am a bit surprized that he did not go far enough into the roles played by Fani Kayode, Fredick Alade Williams, Dauda Adegbenro, Richard Akinjide, M.A. Akinloye, Adegoke Adelabu et ce tera. In conclusion, Dr. Amao appeared to have been a witness to the history of the thing. Thank you for posting.

Yes, Chief Anthony Enahoro moved the motion for independence in 1953, whilst Akintola moved the motion in 1957, but it was rejected. Remi Fani-Kayode also moved the motion for independence in 1958, which was successfully passed.
Enahoro's motion was not successful. It was Akintola's motion that was successful and led to Nigeria's independence.

Thanks for your great narrative sir, sheds some light on events. My main takeaway from your narration is that Akintola indeed betrayed his colleagues in AG by initiating a unilateral talk with the NPC for coalition, before giving a feedback to his leader. And that ties in with the character of the man it seems, whatever his other good qualities were. If he had any respect for his colleagues and party rules, he would have consulted and sort some aggregation of thoughts, opinions and strategy before reaching out to political opponents.

Zik took the eastern region to the North because he felt the West was too educated and enlightened. Today, what has becomes of the alliance between the North and the East?
Taiwo you are right partially, but Zik did it for personal and national interest igbos had businesses in the north, many were born there Zik himself was born and raised in the north. Ideology wise Zik was Pan African, but Awo believed in Social democratic norms, some form of socialism creating opportunity for the masses scholarships, helping farmers, state intervention in the economy and so on.Igbos on the hand believed in pure Capitalism. Awo would have been president if he did mentioned he would probe Obasanjo regime, He had great dreams and ideas for Nigeria but he made some mistakes. l am igbo by the way.

Awolowo joined forces across Nigeria to forge national unity during a national emergency/ crises that threatened the core existence of the young and fragile nation he labored with others to birth . Ibos core neighbors you would remember didn’t support the idea of Biafra as envisioned by the Biafra agitators. When a man becomes a premier/governor, it is not do or die. When the majority of the people say you are not wanted, step aside and live to fight another day. This old man is clearly an Akintola man. Awo is a legend, and he lives on.
Taiwo Olaniyi Rewind and listen to his revelation again. The man was speaking the obvious truth without choosing side. It was a known fact that Awo despised the Hausas and refused to bow to none. The was was simply being neutral.
We would have been better off, if each region had been allowed to go at its own pace. And that was the vision of Awo. Akintola wanted to achieve his ambition, and he wouldnt mind any means of realising it.
And Akintola had to bow to the North just because of power? I have read a lot of stories on Awo, yes he is not a saint, but that man did whatever he did for the love of the Yoruba people. And really why should the uneducated rule over the educated ad more sophisticated. Now that the North has rule Nigeria for the most part of her history what exactly have we gained from it? Heck! even their region is still the most undeveloped.
In actual fact, each region was allowed to develop at its own pace back then. That was why the West was dveloped than the Federal government. Thanks to Awolowo! Unfortunately, when an Igbo man Major General Aguiyi Ironsi became the Head of State, he emasculated the regions for a strong Central Government.
Benard Benjani the damage the igbos have also done in this country cannot be quantified. The most annoying part is that they still refused to take any responsibility for their part in the civil war. They just love to play the victim card.

Awolowo was right in turning down the offer of forming a coalition government with the North, in my humble opinion. He would have been a ceremonial president, like what Zik became. Hence the reason he was a visionary leader. Going by what Dr Amos has just explained, you can tell that Awolowo was politically naive during the course of the first election. It just a shame. Nigeria would have fulfil her potential, if the man was giving a chance to govern. Awolowo Wasn't perfect, but he had all the attributes of a good leader. Kwame Nkrumah spoke highly of him in one of his books. He was a visionary leader and an economist as well. Gone, but not forgotten! RIP Mr Awolowo. Wow, so the igbos formed coalition government with the North. These folks used to wine and dine together. They've the audacity to call yorubas betrayal. The irony is strong with this one.
He rejected the opportunity to form a coalition with the north under a civilian democracy but he had no moral revulsion in forming alliance with military wing of the same north he hated.

He traveled to Enugu to persuade Ojukwu to make peace and remain part of the federation, but Ojukwu remained intransigent. As a matter of fact, in March 1966 Awolowo, sensing the imminent danger, wrote a letter to Ironsi from prison stating that him and his colleagues had what it took to save Nigeria and reverse the state of anarchy that was on the verge of engulfing the country and requesting the release of him and his colleagues, but Ironsi refused!
Uche Oparah Awolowo actually wanted to deal with the igbos, for Azikiwe’s betrayal of forming an alliance with the north to put Awolowo in jail. Soon as Awo was release, he was out for revenge. Before Awo went to prison the mid-western region was part of the west, no way Awo was going to separate as long as the mid-west was annexed by Biafra. Awo was too smart for that, so he killed 2 birds with one stone.

The disagreement between AWO and SLA was political ideology AWO wanted to be in opposition following the 1959 general elections and worked towards the 1964 federal elections seeking alliances with other major parties in fact Chief Awolowo was already making a breakthrough with Zik's party the NCNC when Chief Akintola lied against AWO that he was planning to overthrow the Hausa-Fulani led Federal Government SLA actually betrayed AWO most of the old man stories are convoluted.

Chief S O Sonibare, as secretary completed the fou brains behind NIPC. NIPC built Cocoa House which was called 'Ile Agbe' or House of Farmers in 1965. A one sided and very superficial account of the action group crisis. He also included many inaccuracies. Just one an example Chief Ladoke Akintola was not told to resign from the Premiership but was removed by the action group caucus in the Western Region house of assembly. He was actually removed as premier by the Governor Oba Adesoji Aderemi. The meeting he mentioned where they threw chairs was actually a vote of confidence session for the new premier Chief DS Adegbenro (Who he calls Soroye in the clip). Chief Obafemi Awolowo was not blameless. For one he exhibited lack of political tack during the crisis but Akintola was not saint either.

what good did Awolowo do for yoruba nation and what good did Akintola do for the Yoruba's, people caused confusion in the midst of the two great men to divide them, when chief Obafemi Awolowo came to owo, i saw him live as a member of the boys brigade, he talked, how can this man say he couldn't talk in campaign, it was only Akintola that was doing all the talking.

Akintola was very sarcastic and abusive towards his opponents. Baba Awo was too polished to use any of the languages Akintola was using then because he was more exposed and educated. Some people pass through schools but never allow education to pass through them. We may also say Baba Awo was better speaking in English and Baba Akintola spoke Yoruba better but, he was over ambitious and was very good using derogatory comments about his opponents. Although some people enjoyed listening to him on the radio, one of them must be daddy Amos here. That baba Awolowo did not go to different places in Ekiti to campaign is not true. He went to my own village and different others close by and they loved him. Baba Akintola kind of politics was by force, people were kidnapped on their way to work and farms, houses were burned down because they belonged to the other party"s members and so many other atrocities like that . It did n"t take long before the AG people started to retaliate and the whole Western region became a war zone. The Hausas were watching us and they were very pleased. Everybody was relieved except the Hausas when the military took over on January 15,1966. May we never see that kind of violence in Yoruba land again.

History is very important. Can anyone believe that it's the same people who act as if they have never done anything with the north before.
The political unrest in SW(Yoruba land) was one of the main reasons for the January coup and Chief Awolowo was to be made the president if the coup was successful. I am shocked hearing this and the yorubas would still join hands with others to fault n call it "Igbo coups" I wept, no wonder the government forced History lessons obsolete. We are getting to know the truth on a daily basis
For the sake of Independence, Zik so aliened with the North no doubt... Because of his involvement with the Northern leaders he was never like by Ojukwu. Remember history has it stated that Zik was more of a Nigerian than Igbo(Biafra).

I believe an elder should be very unbiased. Not sowing partisan political views and bias into the new generation. Dr Amoo is a respectable name but this thrashing of Awolowo to uplift Akintola shouldn't be. @@SmartKelz Ojukwu and Ironsi stopped the Jan 1966 coup. Ojukwu was commander in Kano and Ironsi was army chief in Lagos. If not for them, the coup would have succeeded. For more eye-witness account, see Adewale Ademoyega’s book: WHY WE STRUCK (he was one of the coup plotters).

This "Dr" Amoo is so wrong, maybe not about the history, but about his interpretation of decisions. He opined that Action Group's not agreeing to form a coalition government with Northern-led Federal Government was the reason for "underdevelopment" in Western Nigeria and enjoyment and development in Eastern and Northern Nigeria? I'm surprised he still holds such opinion in recent Nigeria despite glaring evidence to the contrary.
He was saying that we should imagine the position taken by Azikwe being occupied by Awolowo. Western Region would have benefited more than being opposition at that time.
He was wrong. Zik was just a toothless bull dog in that Era. Nkrumah later blamed him for aligning with the north just to get a ceremonial role when he could have aligned with the west and become prime minister with Awo as his chancellor of the exchequer!

Dr. Amoo's account is rather pedestrian. A dispassionate history of Chief Akintola's politics is still waiting to be written. I have no doubt that Chief S. L. Akintola was not the caricature that currently prevails in some circles, but I am also convinced that the man made some terrible political mistakes for which he paid with his life. For those who are interested in the other side of the Akintola's story, I recommend Akinjide Osuntokun's "Chief S. Ladoke Akintola: His Life and Times" and Dr. Victor Ladipo Akintola's (SLA' son) account in "Akintola: The Man and the Legend", as a starter. Of course both books are written by SLA loyalists but still there is much to learn from them; as we wait for much more credible historians or chroniclers to fill in the missing gaps in the Akintola saga.

There is nothing more out there to be written about Chief Samuel Ladoke AKintola. The facts are out there but some of us always choose to go on a wild goose chase. And as always, their efforts will end in futility. It is amazing you would recommend Dr. Victor Ladipo Akintola's book on Akintola. What do you expect a child to write about his father? If Femi Fani-Kayode writes a book about his father, Remi Fani-Kayode, it will be a rosy book. Do you know that in Ogbomosho today, nothing about Akintola is celebrated? Ask yourself why the people of Ogbomosho just want to forget all about Akintola. As premier, the late Chief Akintola did what he wasn't supposed to do and he was impeached. Out of the 110 house members that handled Akintola's impeachment process, 89 voted "YES" to impeach him. After his impeachment, the magnanimous Yorubas gave Akintola the opportunity to serve out his term out and vacate. At the expiration of his term, Akintola refused to go and threw the West into political chaos in which thousands of Yorubas lost their lives. Yorubas have refused to learn from Akintola's mistakes, they refused to learn from Chief Hubert Ogunde's song "Yoruba ronu". Look at Yoruba land today, it is in a big mess! Awolowo left behind an unparalleled blue-print for good governance for the Yoruba and Nigeria to emulate. Instead of emulating good governance, they have chosen politics of bitterness and destroyed Yoruba land. Go to Ekiti and Oyo states, you'll feel sorry for the Yorubas. It very shameful that a land that once led Nigeria in human and structural developments is now a caricature of her glorious past. Instead of them to "ronu" and do the right things many of them are still talking nonsense.
Yes, there are still a lot to write and learn about Chief Akintola's politics and his time in politics. I wish you would read Dr Ladipo Akintola's book before you made a judgement on it. Indeed if you read Chief Obafemi Awolowo's autobiography, Awo, you would get a different picture of Chief S.L. Akintola, which bears no resemblance to the caricature that has been deliberately propagated about the man. A prophet is never honoured in his own country, is a biblical truth which still holds today. So it's not a big deal if Chief Akintola is not honoured in his native town of Ogbomosho. I share your lamentation for the state of things in Yorubaland today, but that cannot be blamed on any one person. Certainly not on a man assasinated in 1966 and whose political faction has been kept out of power in the Yorubaland since then. Akintola was not an angel because there is no angel in politics. And as I acknowleged in my initial comment, he "made some terrible political mistakes for which he paid with his life." But there is no doubt that Chief Akintola was a great, albeit misunderstood, Yoruba patriot.
You need not recommending book for my reading on this matter because I have read Ladipo Akintola's book and most of Chief Awolowo's books. My candid opinion is, blaming Chief Akintola or Chief Awolowo will not solve any of the many problems in Yoruba land today. We have to revisit those issues only to learn from the mistakes made back then. But in order to learn good lessons from those mistakes, we must deal with only on facts. In Ladipo Akintola's book and other Akintola's loyalist's books, none mentioned the impeachment of his father. In a House of 110 members, a 2/3 majority (74) was needed to convict SLA but a whopping number of 89 voted "YES" to convict Chief S L A Akintola. He was impeached by the House, not by Awolowo, Adegbenro or Fadahunsi. Aren't you surprised that this not mentioned in Ladipo Akintola's book? No son would write anything demeaning about his father. Have you ever read anything demeaning about Adolf Hitler written by any of his children or grandchildren? I never said that Chief Akintola was not a great man or to use your words - Yoruba patriot. What a man or a woman did when alive is his/her legacy and the legacy makes his/her greatness. When a man's action left more bitter taste in the mouths of his people, you be the judge.
I'm afraid this is turning into a chain-mail which I never like, but I wish to just correct an assumption you made in your comment. Apparently you have not read either Dr Akintola or Osuntokun's book. You cannot assume to know the content of a book before you read it. How do I know that you haven't read the books? If you have read the books you would know that both authors despite being Akintola's loyalists (one of them, his son) actually stated that the mistake SLA made was not to go when the people had rejected him. That was why I told you earlier that you should read a book before giving a judgement on it. You keep on implying that because Dr. Akintola is the son of SLA therefore his contribution should not be taken into account. Why not? After all what we know about most of statesmen and women all over the world are often things written by themselves and/or their loyalists, that include what we know about Jesus Christ and all other religious leaders . Awolowo was lucky to be able to write his side of the story but Akintola was not so lucky, having being murdered before he could get the time to tell his own side of the story in book form. Despite your tone of authority in the matter, I am not sure you were present at the meeting where Akintola was supposedly impeached. So what makes your "facts" more credible than other "facts" that dispute them? And by the way who are the historians who provide your facts, and what side were they in the matter? Of course blaming either Chief Akintola or Chief Awolowo "will not solve any of the many problems in Yoruba land today". So why did you, after acknowledging that fact, go straight to blame Chief Akintola again, by insinuation? Of course Hitler's children would not be able to write anything about their father, because they died with their father. Didn't you know that? It is really egregious to compare Akintola to Hitler. Quite outlandish in the extreme! And it is because of this kind of thing that a balanced story of Akintola needs to be written, read and debated by a wide public.

Awolowo was a traitor who sold Yoruba and Igbo out for a riches to his bloodline. He was a member of the fraternity of the white men...along with many other like him who had been schooled in the colonial brain washed system and so was traitors like Ojukwu. This information is not accurate. Why would Awolowo settle for ceremonial president, an office without portfolio? Zik that took that role was useless throughout the first republic. Who ordered Akintola to discuss with the NPC? He is not doing it because of the interest of the Yoruba, but for his own agenda. He wanted to lead, simple.
