"Y'know my boys.....got'em killed..." is kind of a brutal line.
it stings...
It is brutal because it is true.

Exactly- He doesn’t say “you killed my boys” … he realises he’s fked up in the hugest way possible.

Seeing him aim for the shoulders instead of the chest once he saw body armor really put the cherry on top of this scene, they thought it out to a lot of details. Wonderful show.

Really underated. This is awesome.
Moments like this when he doesn’t finish the guy off brutally at the end are what make this show a standout. He knows he’s done and not a threat and Ray is not actually a callous man. Many other shows would have the dying man’s words cut off with a shotgun to the head with the shooter saying something biting or sarcastic right after but this show feels so much more human and real in the way it handles these situations.
This is show, in reality even a dieing man is a threat. He may very well have a hidden grenade under his sleeve, who knows
Not finishing the job is how your kids become orphans.
Personally i would have preferred they finish me off
@Cam Robertson "probably in no pain" Then he uses the last ounce of his strength to shoot you when you put your weapon down because adrenaline is a hell of a drug.
@@bigsmegga didn't he dropped his gun? wouldn't it be better to use a hidden weapon to save your own life instead of holding it to ambush your killer at the end?
"Bit off more than I could chew, didn't I?" "Just a little."
Ray immediately dropping the mentality of a ruthless killer and telling the dying enemy to try and relax and have at least a death that's as peaceful as possible says so much about his character. We're waiting Scott Ryan, I'm sure whatever is coming next will at the very least be as good as Mr. Inbetween.
It's also a bit of a turning point for Ray, where he starts to recognize some humanity in his victims. I really like the way he falters when Graham mentions how much he regrets getting his friends killed, and how he refuses to take the money afterword. A really solid character moment to round out a great action scene.
@@lordmcsmith that turning point always reminds me of something a soldier told me. Something along the lines of him having killed a lot of people, all of them thought they're on the right side. Doesn't matter anymore then, while they're dying, they just want to go home. I guess Ray felt that in one way or the other.
One thing I've learned watching Mr Inbetween. In the criminal world you'll last a lot long if you just stick to what was agreed to.
Sometimes, I’ve had a few friends murdered over turf. No honor amongst criminals
Another thing to 'learn' about the criminal world; best policy is to avoid it.

I gotta say, aiming aside and all those juicy details, I really like that the leader of the group kept caring about his lads, throughout the chaotic scenario. I am so sick and tired of all the "bad guys" in tv series and movies not giving a flying heck about their boys when they're dying all around them.
Yeah, the only reason he even dies in the first place is because he puts himself in harm's way trying to save the younger guy.
I'm pretty sure they were his actual sons if I remember the show
Either they had a firearms director. Or the prop guy knows his stuff. This series definitely know how to do firefights
which is hilarious in a sense being australian and their firearms ban. yet here in the states, mistakes are so damn plentiful its crazy.
We still got guns don’t worry,
@MrMarrok657 There's guns about. It's just not nearly as entrenched in our culture as in the states.

The way he reloads that shotgun is taught to special forces and tournament shooters. Spot on.
Shotgunners can definitely appreciate this scene from a technique standpoint.
Is it a tactic like "Never lower the weapon" or "keep eyes on target"?
@@camrobertson1886he also takes a shot direct to the vest and doesn't flinch at all, guy had some heavy duty stuff on.
Yes but he should have used the time to reload the magazine tube before he re-engaged. He's not the only one that's been trained. 😉
@camrobertson1886 he's staying square to get the most protection from his body armour. Most body armour is just a front plate and a rear plate - no side plates. Firing side-on is safer when you DON'T have body armour because it minimises your profile. But with regular body armour, it's just exposing your side to bullets. Ray would have been trained to move and shoot as square as possible, at least with body armour on. In fact, if he'd been side on when he took that round midway through the fight, he might have died to it. Standing square saved him.
This show has one of the best shootouts ever it's so underrated
This show in general fucking incredible

Best TV show for years, the balance between the crime, comedy and pathos was superb throughout.
Never been to Australia. Love this show. Not going to Australia.
Haha. Its not that bad. Ive been here 45 years. I've never been in a situation where I wish I had a gun to pull on someone or met anyone who has had a gun pulled on them. Its the social circles you keep. If you are just a normal person not looking for trouble Australia is fine.

@@boubear26 I feel bad that you can't own a gun. I love Aussies. I hate their government which doesn't recognize the rights of the law abiding and instead punishes everyone for the acts of a few psychopaths.
This scene moves me alot. And i have not seen the show (But i will now). The dying guy, seeks to makes amends and peace before dying and ray shows him the respect of granting him forgiveness, and company in his last moments. The direct eye contact - the willingness the share this intimate moment with a guy that he has plente of motivation to hate and despise.
The respect is the main part of this show, in almost every dialogue you can feel it.
I always wondered if the idiot in the front seat didn't give him the finger, if he would have let them go?
That last second of this clip. A sigh turned into a snarl. The curled lip and wrinkled nose. Turning away. Wishing to be done and gone. One of the best portrayals of conscious violence. He did it. He'd do it again. Doesn't mean he likes it And that eats at him.
Thanks, I noticed the expression and wondered what it was. You can also see him change in subsequent episodes - seems to stem from Graham getting his boys killed and it weighs on his mind.
I think Graham was a veteran as well.
Yeah, Ray has seen a lot of men uncaringly use others for profit. Like his 'war' with Davros, who was a wannabe gangster that couldn't handle feeling disrespected by Ray and got a lot of people killed because of it. Or how everything went down with Rafael. In Graham he saw a man he respected, who's only thought was for his boys and how his foolish actions got them killed. Davros and Rafael would have been defiant to the end in that situation, thinking only of themselves, but Graham acknowledged his mistakes and regretted the pain he caused. Ray had no hate for the man, only the circumstances that led them here. We saw Ray forge a friendship with Dave, a man hired to kill him. I feel that if circumstances were different, he would have been mates with Graham too.
This show is so very underrated. the dialog is just light years above most Hollywood bs. Love it.
The way this plays out is so poignant, in the scenes prior, you see the group of men talking about robbing Ray and Gazza but it's not clear if those guys are family or just mates. Then, in his dying breath, the dad laments that they're his sons... There are lots of crime shows that are excellent (Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Barry) but they don't always make you feel as alone and isolated as Mr Inbetween does. It's quite remarkable. No bag of cash is worth this.
"...Bit off more than I can chew, eh?"
They're not his actual sons. They're childhood best friends, they've been friends for such a long time. The captured friend says that's the reason he can't give Ray names. Still one of the best scenes but not his kids
Skulls Ain't Dead and as much as I love The Sopranos, The Wire, BB/BCS, for me this feels much more realistic. The conversations don't at all feel scripted, just natural. And I'd like to close by saying a very unpopular opinion, but Band of Brothers is my personal all time favorite show.
@@nothingleft3473 Hell no mate, unpopular opinions be damned! Lol BOB is the best war show of all time, I'm watching the Pacific right now and sorely missing the robust character development of BOB, not that the Pacific is bad but it is a smidge less fantastic than BOB and frankly, a tad patronising to us Aussies (like the Melbournian chick asking "what is baseball" like we're in some other planet or something, talk about clunky, unnatural dialogue). Agreed though, Mr Inbetween is the most natural dialogue I've ever heard in film/tv, it's commendable how perfectly they've captured Australian slang.
He’s not their actual dad. He was the leader of their gang but they all grew up together so he was more of a father figure. He definitely cared for them but he wasnt their father.
Such a raw, visceral scene with a strange undertone of humanity at the end. Amazing scene

An amazingly well written show, there’s deadly violence in it at times, but like the end of this clip, it’s not glorified.
This show has the best character development. From the start of killing the VP and other people he cared about, you can see how he slowly started to develop a distain of the consequences of his actions.
2:57 gives me chills everytime...
Its sad because that stings knowing that in his last moments
This is amongst the best shows most people haven’t even heard of. Top notch 👌
Ray's humanity screams so silently here, and I think he had much respect for Graham, who was making his peace at the end. It went both ways. The gun battle was so well done, I can't stop watching.
The last word he hears as before he dies, is the name of his killer. Always seemed more sinister to me! 'Shoulda just give him the cash, hey' 😂
i love when he show the guy in the car perspective as him trying to hunt down the snippers. This scene clearly made the viewer understand how hard it is to spot a snipper, whereas in other movies they will just randomly shot and the snipper is gone
And yet even after pressing pause I could barely see the sniper. Imagine with that scene, it's done quickly likely to represent the heat of the action and yet the camera angle looks like it points at where the sniper is.
Snippers are notoriously hard to find. I dropped some snippers in the woods one time and by the time I found them, they were rusty and ruined. It’s dangerous.
@@Superhunan😂😂
These guys had no idea who they messed with. I didn't notice the clear vest hit on Ray near the end of this before, amazing detail in the show.
Hence Ian Roberts character at the end, comments "Bit off more than I could chew eh !", Ray nods.
I think the reason that people can relate, so much to how Ray is, in this show is because it brings back memories of their childhood and how they grew up; how they were taught to behave to one another. There's only really one reality being promoted in this show and it's respect. This show does it better than any other. There are things, in life, you were taught just never to do. Taking a present off of a child, at Christmas is one of them. Taking the present because you just want to be mean is another. There's also the other scene of two men in their early twenties, purposefully banging into his daughter and breaking her ice cream cone. Firstly, you didn't do that when I was younger as it was just not done. Secondly, you NEVER confronted a father with a young child, no matter what. Thirdly, if you did, well...rest my case. This show reminds me of my youth, how people were when I was a child in the 70's in Scotland. Here's the thing, not only would the police not have been called to the incident, unlike today, had they actually been called they probably would have said to the man that he deserved it and they'd do exactly the same. There were no lawyers to hide behind back then, or should I say, lawyers back then tended to have more of a right & wrong attitude, unlike the money grabbing parasites they are today - if the money's good enough, they'll defend any degenerate regardless what they've done. This show exemplifies the people in this world who see the naked emperor, frustrated that the majority don't. Ray's the one who walks up to him and says _"put some clothes on you pervert."_
In Australia, you would get charged with assault for defending your daughter, its a load of shite.
@@paraszt4269 That's only recently though. Guaranteed, back in the 80's the police wouldn't have touched you. Your reality today is because the police are left wing and no longer right.
@@paraszt4269not before being bashed to a fuckin pulp by the copper dogs first.
Like old mate said “bit off more then he could chew” but this scene is still tragic, these guys made a mistake and it cost them, but you can tell they were close friends. Not only did Steve not rat on his mates they came to get him, after each one of the lads is shot Grayem calls out to them. Jim, Bill & Steve, you can see in his last moments the man his heart broken by what his actions have led to It makes each one of these men so much more human not just some random henchmen, genuinely felt sad for them and I commend the writers for being able to pull it off Great writing, great choreography, great cinematography, great show
its implied in this last scene with them talking that the 3 dudes that died before in the shootout were actually his sons. makes it even "worse" imo. couldnt agree more tho.
@@derschwarzebalken holy shit really? Thats terrible. Ray shoulda just let his boys go and just killed the father.
@@derschwarzebalken No that isn't implication at all. Earlier, when Steve is interrogated by Ray, Steve confesses that it was his mates that robbed Ray and Gary. Later, when Graham refers to them as "my boys", it means they were his (probably lifelong) close friends.

Ian Roberts is amazing in this scene.
one of the greatest scenes ever , i think ray sees himself in his opponent in that moment that the rolls could just as easily be reversed
This might just be the way my warped mind works but consider this. In an alternate universe, Graham is actually Ray. And his crew is actually Ray's crew. The reason I have come to this conclusion is because when Graham, and his boys get assailed by gunfire, he runs out of the car and goes after Steve. Now Steve is wounded, but that doesn't stop Graham from bounding over, picking him up and declaring "Steve, I need you to get up!" After getting peppered by gunfire. Now I can't help but to feel like this is a very Ray thing to do. And to anyone who has watched the entire season they know what I'm talking about in the last episode (Hopefully no spoiler). I see parallels in Graham as I see in Ray.
