  • Whoever wrote that ending knows Thailand and the young free spirited people it can draw in and reduce to nothing. Unless you have lived it you wouldn't know. As he said and i can relate. Been there, done that, reduced it all to nothing, only a story that i tell. Hit the nail on the head with that one.

    • True, but it also manifests a default projection on travelers as hedonists, which is only the case among certain individuals who makes a lot of noise and do a lot of damage, which fits into the post-colonial narrative or trend or fad of the third decade of this century.

    • it was dumb at parts, like when he was banished and his life became a video game, but it was quite original and a very memorable movie. it stuck with me forever and i went to that beach a few years after, was very cool to be there. i don't like this alternate ending. i really liked the actual ending, in the internet cafe.

    • He called himself a "Survivor" in this clip, yeah right! Living on a tropical paradise is not difficult at all. There is food and drinkable water all around. He himself would likely not have survived on his own there. When he got kicked out, he quickly went insane and got himself in trouble soon after. He had zero survival skills. He only got lucky with that little shark. He can't build a proper shelter and can barely hunt/gather food. He's also a terrible backstabbing and selfish person if you think about it. Not a likable character in my book.

      @11cylynt11@11cylynt112 жыл бұрын
    • Also too much of anything gets old fast. Even a tropical paradise gets old eventually. I used to smoke weed daily when I had shingles. I used it for the extreme pain shingles causes. I got the worst kind with postherpetic neuralgia, which causes permanent damage and intense pain to never goes away. I work from home so I was privileged to be able to use it multiple times a day, daily. But I was prescribed the vaccine and it almost completely rid me of the pain. However, I keep smoking weed daily multiple times a day out of habbit. I loved how it made me feel and the whole process was enjoyable. Though, since I was no longer doing it for pain, it became too trivial. It became my new normal. It lost it's excitement and realized I was just going through the motions without much emotion. My tolerance got so strong that I would barely get a mild high even after smoking an entire joint of premium bud, by my self. So I gave myself a choice, either increase my dose to smoking multiple blunts daily, which would become very expensive. Or take a t-break and cut back altogether. I decided to abstain for 2 months. That first bowl after that 2 months break was like smoking for the 1st time all over again. It felt like total euphoria unlike any high I've had in years. There after, I promised myself to only smoke on special occasions, no more than 4 times per month total. Not only would I get super high everytime, but I also only needed 3-5 hits total to get there. I saved so much money that way and it felt special again, gave me something to look forward to. Moral of the story. Pace yourself and find different ways of enjoying life. Because even weed and a tropical paradise can get old fast.

In contrast, a traveller or explorer, is naïve, like somebody who has never played poker before, who sits down at a table to play a game where everybody else knows each other, as "the new guy".

    • Spoiler alert: This is more akin to the ending in the novel. In the novel, Richard and some others dose the new years party with a massive amount of marijuana. Everyone starts going wild due to the amount of weed, then they find out Richard gave the map to some new tourists, and try killing him with spears. Richard, Etienne, and some others escape on a raft. Richard is saved somehow during the stabbings but i can't recall how. Hence, the line in this clip about the scars is sort of a nod to the book's ending. Some of that might be inaccurate, I read the novel ten years ago but that's the gist of it

  • "The Big Chunky Charlie is eating up the whole fucking world" -Daffy Who knew how spot on his character actually was in real life? My question is, what happened to Bugz? I mean Sal was his girlfriend, regardless if she just used him for his carpenter skills and sex. He even held Richard and urged her to kill him. Then all of a sudden he's gone or that he left with everyone else? I understand that the beach and the community meant more to Sal than Bugz did or any man or woman for that matter, just curious as to what happened to that character is all. I don't get the hate this film recieves? It's got a wonderful story, beautiful landscapes, fantastic soundtrack that actually goes along side the film, excellent cast, and the story moves along from start to finish. No filler or dull scenes. It's personally in my Top 5 greatest films of all time! And I'm not even a "beach going" person. I love the mountains! Beaches are beautiful and all, but the ocean is an extremely frightening place and im constantly checking everything that bumps into me. So much so, that I can't even enjoy swimming, which defeats the entire purpose.

  • It makes sense that the producers did not use this ending. This island is suppose to be isolated and untouched from the outside world. A small tour ship going around the island itself would invalidate the entire storyline/point of this movie. I really like this film and it's still in my favs list but both endings are poorly executed. The final cut (Internet cafe) ending being the worse ending of the two. Danny Boyle should have stick to the source material. This alternative ending would have been more suitable for use if Richard and company made their way to the mainland before parting ways from there.

      @johootly@johootly7 жыл бұрын
    • johootly, hi! Here it Comes: The People are threatened by the drug guys after these killed the newcomers. The drug farmer show them the card Richard drew for the now killed travellers and tell them they will kill them all if more travellers arrive on the Island. To make a point they show them the corpses of the murdered victims - naked and full of bullet holes. They leave the corpses in the camp and return to the jungle. That happens at the climax of an anneversary Party. People are drunk by self produced alcohol and extremely high by drugs. Hysterically they "attack" the dead Newcomers making them responsible for the Situation. They dismember the Bodys and cut them to pieces in an act of madness. When they see the Card they recognice that Richard drew it. (He wrote a few sentences for the Americans under the map and signed the text with his Name. In the book Sal wasn`t informed that Richard knew the victims and told them about the Island.) The People form a mob and try to kill Richard with their knives. He gets wounded by countless cuts. In the last moment Etienne, Francois and his other two best friends save him. They attack the others with their fishing spears and strike Sal and Bugs down. Then they flee with Richard with the float (is it called a float?) from the Americans. Only the four escape the Island. Etienne and Francois return to France. Richard and the two other Guys travel back to England. He stays in contact with the two Englishmen and they remain friends. But Francois and Etienne he never saw again. In the book Francois didn`t betray Etienne and there was no sexual relationship between Richard and her. Although they were attrackted to another. I have read that Danny Boyle was forced by the Studio (the Forces behind the curtain) to rewrite the script. The Producers wanted a love Story for Leonardo because of the success of Titanic. There are a lot of differences between the plot of the novel and the movie. Another example: Sal doesn`t force Richard to have sex with her. She never travels with him to buy supplies. Obviously the Producers of the movie wanted to "sex up" the Story. But in the end the movie follows the book in most parts and Mr. Boyle tried to handle the Story with respect. Please forgive me my bad English. I`m no native Speaker or writer in this language.

And later there is not one sentence in the book where he pitys or even reflects this fact. Okay, his state of mind was deranged at this part of the plot. • I like this ending a lot more. It's a good example of a spoiled kid not being able to handle it and just offing herself when she can't have it her way. Just watched it again tonight for the first time in years and I forgot how much I hated these kids. Immature, over privileged college brats partying on mommy and daddies money, and refusing responsibility, wanting to run away, get drunk, party and fuck all the time. This film is a good example of what's wrong with a lot of youths today.

  • I have been to this island and it I beautiful! The Thai people have no problem with the film- it is some of their livelihoods as millions of tourists flock here! However because of this and no government regulation the beach is now practically destroyed form excessive boat fuel and is trampled like hell :(

  • there's a lot of differences between the book and the movie. I do like the movie better. In the book Richard is British, he never gets with Francois, I'm the end he Etienne, and Keaty pick pocket people for money so they can get back home. Either way, both endings make me depressed. It's such a good story ans it sucks when it's over.

  • There is two sides to that story. They got permission to shoot there because the beach was very polluted, there was tons of litter, needles. They restored it to pristine condition but they reshaped the sand and they transplanted some trees. No ne stopped them or protested when they did it but when the government saw the film with the drugs and violence painting Thailand and Thai people in a bad light they went after the filmakers and the 'enviromental damage' was a good reason to sue.
