Credit to Jojol, a French tech youtuber who made a video with this idea a couple of years ago.
Backmarket refurbished iphone, apple refurbished iphone, backmarket refurbished phone refurbished smartphone.

I've decided to buy the same Iphone from both backmarket - the refurbished marketplace, and apple's own refurbished program - creatively named, "apple certified refurbished"

The reason why the 12 mini from back market had such a low battery health percentage was because the 12 mini had a huge flaw in it's battery as apple made it far too small for it's internal components, therefore it's battery health decreases significantly lower than other iphone models
Yes, it would seem... A real shame, makes what would otherwise be quite a tempting refurbished option rather dubious...
@whizzard Well at least you still got the 13 mini which ever so slightly improved battery performance, but still a huge flaw from apple's side

That would be the case, though speaking from personal events some friends who had bought Iphones from Backmarket always seem to have battery related issues after a year of purchasing the refurbished device.
I understand your methods for the video, but I think going for the best condition possible from BackMarket would have been a better test. Given that Apple replaces the externals of their phones, you’re basically comparing a new iPhone to a used iPhone, and being slightly disappointed that the new phone looks better than the used phone. If you had gone with the excellent condition, you would be comparing the phones on a much more level playing field, and then making the determination on whether or not a couple scratches and 98% battery health vs a new iPhone is worth it for £180 difference. Yes and no. "Best condition" from back market often means replaced parts with OEM manufacturers, it's a bit tricky. That said I bought a surface laptop there and am 100% satisfied.
This is considered refurbished. So they should replace the battery.
The excellent condition non-Apple supplied phone may still have a 3rd party battery.

The main reason why people chose apples refurbished products is because apple puts the used internals into a brand new body with a new battery so you are pretty much getting a brand new phone besides the brains. And you get a new cable with it. Whereas backmarket the battery could be low and the condition can be bad.
They have a whole category called “iPhone With New Battery” in the “Smartphones” section in the Back Market app, just to let you know.
The battery for back market is always over 85 lol
Don’t forget to consider the Apple student discount program. And, they don’t care to check, even if you’re a student or not.

Great review, really helpful. Having owned a 6S Plus from new, I’m thinking about refurbished and looking at a 12 Pro Max. I guess your fair one was just that, so I’d definitely be looking at a much higher condition one. The Apple refurbished is definitely as new and the new case and battery are certainly a plus.

A few weeks ago I bought a 256GB Samsung S22 Ultra from Back Market in "Good" condition for only 660€ (about 565£). It looks brand new except for 2 tiny scratches on the corners of the screen. The battery easily lasts an entire day. The display has been replaced at some point because when you look very closely you can see glue residue in between the top and bottom seams. But thats to be expected when you buy refurbished. All in all I'm happy with my "new" phone and I'll probably buy from them again in the future. Oh yeah, only 30 hours after I placed my order, the phone arrived in Belgium all the way from Estonia. That's actually really impressive.

@@whizzard Yeah, I do think it's an OEM part. The quality of the display is very good and it's much brighter then my previous Galaxy S10 was. Also the fingerprint reader (integrated in the display) works a lot faster and more accurate then my S10 did. So if it's an aftermarket display, it's a very good one but I'm pretty sure it's OEM. In Belgium there isn't a version of Backmarket. We Belgians are directed to the Dutch website. And on the Dutch website are sellers from all over Europe. Mine, ReMarket, happened to be from Estonia.
Good to hear... Cause I have come across some comments where people have been given generic batteries... Interesting... I guess the European backmarkets may be somewhat closer linked then the uk one.

Hey, id like to share my experience with backmarket. My first order got canceled because of stock issues. The second one came delayed, and the display on the phone was replaced with an aftermarket one, that was extremely low quality. True tone was non existant, 3d touch didnt work and the touch itself was really not working properly. They happily took it back for a refund though, so its more of QC than anything really
I’ve used Back Market for three years, you are absolutely correct. It’s a quality control issue, because they have so many different sellers they have to rely on the sellers and integrity, and how they do their own quality control
well maybe buy the excellent condition one and dont be cheap. Just because it says good condition is most popular doesnt mean you should go for that one. I have bought both my iphones from them in excellent condition and I have received both on time. The speaker on the bottom did go out on my iphone XS but I've heard people that bought brand new having same issue over time. If you are going to be cheap on a refurbished phone website where you are already paying half the price that is your own problem.

Great video man! You should try buying a more expensive tier phone in backmarket, at least good if you really want to have a "clean" phone. I bought my phone in swappie and i bought the C tier one, and weirdly enough they gave me a free upgrade to a "B" grade since the C one was out of stock it seemed. The phone came only with one small sratch on the back glass but the rest was super super clean and really seemed like new. Battery health at 100% and the phone is an american model too. I really encorage people buying used iphones from this two brands since they have a good and trustworthy "name" with tons of happy people with they service :D

BackMarket provided the platform for 3rd party refurbishers to sell their iPhone products. Unlike BackMarket, if you have trouble with the phone you can easily get it repaired or replaced at the Apple Store. Also Apple Certified Refurbished qualify for the AppleCare extended warranty program.
I work in an Apple Store and I confirm that. NEVER BUY AT BACK MARKET
You are right but the problem is that you find very few models available in apple refurbished section. For instance no iphone 13 pro 256 gb is available right now. While through back market you can always find the model you are looking for.
@@akio2730 plus they are only like 200 dollars cheaper then a brand new iphone.. its literally preference. But if you buy excellent condition phone from backmarket they usually give you a pretty solid phone. Other then the chance of getting battery from 95-100% is random you dont know what it will be at. But you are paying half the price almost even compared to apple refurbished so I would say backmarket is pretty legit. They are only going to get better they havent been around for even a decade yet.

Interesting video - thank you. Over the years I've bought a few things (mainly Macs, in fact) via Apple's refurbished channel and they've all been very good. Indeed, on occasion I got a better deal than I had expected - a 2017 iMac came with several upgrade options installed (extra memory & upgraded processor), so the 12% saving on the model list price (i.e., without the upgrade options) turned out to be nearer 20% against the new price with the options. So I'm a fan of Apple's refurbished channel. I still think you're over-rating that phone from BackMarket. I would be especially bothered about that battery rating - at 87% it's a long way down the slope. Maybe another couple of years of useable life? You could end up paying another £230 then to replace it, whereas the phone from the Apple channel will be good for 5 years or more. As Captain Vimes spotted, people who buy expensive boots end up paying less for footwear over the long term....
I'm glad you got a good deal from apple, I didn't know there was the possibility of them upgrading you... I hear what you say about backmarket... But I think the other side of the coin is that maybe in 2 years you will want something newer or different anyway. And you still have half the money. And if something happens to the phone, Eh..., it's only cost you half again.
Apple will replace the battery for £60. Then you’re comparing nearly £300 for a phone that was beat to death and a phone that’s pristine for 180€ difference. The better option in this case is getting the excellent condition phone, assuming it comes with 95% or better battery health.
just my two sense, id think the fair condition androids that look better than fair is because the outer casing on androids is much easier to replace than apples. id also think that's why apple asks as much as they do for the official refurbished ones as i cant imagine its easy to replace their outer casing.

I personally use the Apple Certified Refurbished store. I bought my 12 Pro from them and it looks just like brand new, and even 7 months later, the battery is still at 100% health. I had ordered an 11 Pro, and a XR form Backmarket in the past. I returned them as I wasn't happy with them. Could tell that the screen had been replaced with aftermarket ones and did not look that good. I also did order a 6S from them, but there was either a battery or a logic board issue with that one.

The problem with the iPhones recently is even if you have a case the get so scratched up on the sides. I had a 11 pro max and 14 pro max and both are scratched to poop even though the were in official apple cases

I dunno where you are, but my assumption is that their stock cycles... It may be worth waiting a few days and checking again... Not everything was available here when i bought, if I remember correctly.

My fair condition iPhone 12 Pro Max looked fantastic. Some very small scratches on the screen and on the surrounding on the case and no dent at all. It could easily pass as a good quality and for a 60-150 price drop depending on colour and quality it’s definitely worth it.

In my country I always buy and resell phones illegally imported without state taxes (damn, what a sinner I am). And despite the fact that I live on the opposite side of the world from the USA, it always surprised me that both new and used versions for the American market are always so cheaper than any others.

I have bought 4 phones from BackMarket and one MacBook Pro and the condition of all 5 have been without any scratches or damage - I bought Fair condition each time as each time the condition has been so good. One of the four phones was an iphone, the other three are Google Pixels. I am shocked at how beat up your iPhone 12 was. What happened?? I am really surprised / shocked.

i got an 11 pro max in good condition from back market coming up 2 years ago now and it arrived in brilliant condition zero scratches and its served me well. the charger port has recently decided to play up, cleaned it out worked for a bit now broken again, just ordered a new 15 pro instead of going second hand again

I bought a iPhone8 from BackMarket and it arrived in a USPS clear plastic back The original package was soaking wet and mangled beyond hope. The post office had pretty done their best to destroy it. My experience from repairng mobile devices for 10 years is that moisture is a phone's worst enemy and I do not doubt that it will spell the end for this unit. That being said BackMarket had only use a small flat rate box for a shipping container and the phone it's self was in a plastic bag and they had used a USPS padded envelope for cushioning. This was substandard packing and I was not impressed. In addition the screen had two scratches on it one was 3 inches long and the other about 1 inch long. I asked for a replacement and they told me they would send me another if I sent the original back to them or I could PAY for a another and then send the other one in for a refund. My opinion is if I have bought and paid for a decent phone then they should provide me with what I paid for. Once I received the replacement then I would return the original phone but they have refused to do that. The bottom line is this was the first and the last time I will do business with them so beware.
I'm sorry to hear, that's disssapointing. Backmarket's packaging is definitely a bit of a sore point, sometimes it's been fine, but that's certainly not the rule... To be honest their return policy may not be fair, but in my experience is the same everywhere... With the exception of cheap aliexpress rubbish where they just refund and have done with it...

Most reputable companies will be glad to send you a replacement and let you return the defective one. They already have your money so they should be glad to send you what you paid for.@@dmo848

Loved your video, Although I wish you would have gotten the excellent condition from Backmarket for a fair comparison. To show which one was worth it. This felt kinda biased since apple had everything changed. But I understand the financial restrictions.
I may well in a future video... I agree that it wasn't a 'fair' comparison, but I think it is interesting to compare the ends of the spectrum too.
iPhone mini are notorious for early battery deterioration. I have a 13 mini and within a year the battery health was about 80%. I later figured out that the phones weak antennas and the constant signal searching caused a fast battery drain. When I am home, or connected to WiFi, I switch to Airplane mode and use WiFi calling to receive calls and texts. Battery then drains much slower.
It's a shame, but I guess that would make sense... Probably good ideas those are, thanks!
i have my 12 mini for one year and half and its at 87% Only charged with 5W apple charger and never charged overnight. The smaller battery shows the degradation sooner i guess

I think you gots to go excellent. Wait and save if you have to bc it changes the whole experience having a pristine device. This is especially true when you consider how much longer you can keep an iPhone versus other devices.
Well, the black market phone is really in fair condition for that price … while for Apple you got the feeling of a new one which is why you pay the extra extra Apple tax

Please remember you have six years warranty in UK if you buy from a company. Five years in Scotland. If anything goes wrong with the phone as you haven't caused
Are you talking about consumer protections? I feel that most phones battery's become fairly unusable within that span of time... And that'd just be wear and tear...
Last year, I got an iPhone 11 from back market in good condition. The phone came bent and refused for a few weeks to issue me a refund after sending the phone back multiple times. I ended up getting my money back but I won’t be buying from them again…

@@whizzard It was the US version of back market. It was the seller refusing to accept the return. Now thinking about that, there could be a slight possibility I buy from them in the late future

@@whizzard No. I talked to them through backmarket and their policies are that if the phone is damaged you have to return it in three days. I didn’t get to the phone until the third day and I didn’t notice it was bent for a couple days. The seller thought that I had bent the phone but I hadn’t and it was this long process.
Ah, I see, I think we have some consumer protections for that type of thing here in the UK. Doesn't mean some sellers wouldn't try that nonsense... But at least it gives us some leverage.
you were just unlucky with this one, i ordered my 11 pro max from there and also in fair condition and it looked brand new no cracks dents not even a single scratch. One piece of advise for anyone always check who the actual seller is and check their reviews before buying

The apple certified refurbished is basically brand new... They replace the entire housing, camera lens, battery, and screen. Components remain the same, however.
Back Market can be superb value and tracking is excellent. Always be sure to look at the star rating of the seller. Subscribed.

BackMarket refurbished are not actually referbished. They are just used. Apple refurbished are really refurbished.
When i go on backmarket it says the 12 mini is 400+ euros ???? but you say its 280

Oh, sorry to hear... On backmarket the prices go up and down all the time... It's worth checking over a few days before buying... That said the French prices may well just be higher... I always look jealously at the US prices, but forget that we don't have anywhere near the worst here. 😂

All of the iPhone models after the 11 pro have a horrible battery flaw Apple is yet to fix (of course 🙄) it’s so bad people want a recall of their 14’s.

The reason Apples prices are so high for refurbished is that they basically replace all components of the phone, so you’re basically buying a brand new phone.

The only reason I use the certified refurb is because i tried out BackMarket with an apple watch that came with 80% battery that lasted 4 hours compared to the 18 with certified.

I watched your video since it popped up in my recommendations, first time seeing you, i'm not an apple fan at all and i'm not even from the UK lol but i watched it nonetheless and i have to say, when it comes to electronics (phones, pc components and anything that is tech), i usually go for new and never a refurbished but especially for phones, i always buy them brand new so i have a peace of mind that the phone is brand new and won't have the anxiety of who has used it before, what's been done to it etc etc etc. I'd rather wait and gather few hundreds euros more to get a brand new phone than shell it out for a refurbished phone
Hi there, first off thanks for watching, I appreciate it! Actually backmarket is not just in the UK, so hopefully the video is useful to others.. I have in that past subscribed to the peace of mind in a new phone justifying the cost... But as flagships have got so prohibitively expensive these days, feel it's worth the risk... You can often go wrong 2 or three times on the refurbished market before you'd hit the cost of a new iPhone or Samsung.

Unfortunately there aren't any backmarket stores here in greece but of course there are plenty of shops that sell refurbished stuff and whatnot but i watched your vid cuz why not lol. I get what you say with the whole refurbished phones but me personally i have never bought a flagship phone and the most I've ever spent so far on a phone is 300€ (£255). I used to own the Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 from around 2017 till 2021, and now i own the Samsung Galaxy A71 from 2021 till today and i plan to buy my next phone next year when it hits 4 years old and i may get the A55 or A56? Whatever comes next year with a budget of around 400€ (£340). I'm mostly a mid range phone type of guy and honestly, i don't know if i wanna shell out for e.g the s23 or s24 as i actually don't need them. You may say to check out the markets to buy a refurbished s23 or s24 but there is that small part of me that says i will never buy a refurbished phone
My only complaint with Apple Certified, is that they don’t have cheaper options for their phones, like they do for their iPads.
I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S21+ 256gb from back market for around 350 euros in the good condition because excellent was sold out. The phone arrived in way different packaging than in the video, it arrived in back market branded packaging with the receipt and a thank you note and the phone was in a little compartment in the box in a ziplock back with a clear case on it. It also arrived with a Samsung type a to c cable. The phone works flawlessly and it arrived in good cosmetic condition. The only caviat is that it's a korean model so I can't get the Samsung weather app to detect most greek cities and I don't want to flash this phone to other software just for the weather app, I installed accuweather and it works just as good. I've been using the phone for almost 2 months now and I haven't found any issues, battery life seems to be pretty good considering the phones age. I can replace the battery myself when it's needed. My experience was very positive and I'm already thinking about buying a laptop or ipad from the website as well.
I'm glad to hear you had a good experience! Yeah their packaging is anything but consistent... Sometimes has been pretty poor tbh. But overall I've had good purchasing experience... Let me know if you do buy anything besides a phone from them... I'm considering it myself...
In terms of semi objective difference in value: £60 gets you a new battery, £30 for the better condition and £10 for a genuine cable. That makes the objective price difference £100 less. Then you have the peace of mind buying from Apple, the unboxing experience. Then you’re getting close to the Apple refurb only being 25% more.
I’d stick to apple refurbished because they can be bought with applecare+ which gives additional 2 years of warranty and discounted price for accidental damages. The apple refurbished devices are much reliable because they sell it like it’s brand new so less worries for consumers end.
By which time it'll run you 3 phones from backmarket 😂 There's pros and cons for sure...
I got an iPad Air 2020 edition from back market for £380 and it arrived in a Apple certified refurbished box with plugs/charger and the iPad was wrapped in the new plastic so I was confused how I got better packaging than you did for your phone lol
That's hilarious, you've got the hybrid experience! If there's one thing about backmarket packaging, it's that it's completely inconsistent... I don't think I've had the same box more than once, even when it's backmarket branded...
I want to buy an iPhone 12 mini from apple. I checked the apple website turns out the refurbished store is not available in India :/ other refurbished markets in India arent trustworthy, I have had friends who had really bad experiences from them and the excellent conditions had error messages, multiple replaced parts, malfunctioning parts and really had to go through a hard time to return it. I think there is no option for me to get a mini iphone here in India :(

First ti w I watched any of you’re reviews and any on black market ,I’ve just bought 1 new iPad 9th gens from a store in Morocco and another new ipad 9th gen from Amazon ,and I was asked to conSider blackmarket ,,I went with buying new as the Apple from the store has to have at least 1 if not two years limited guarantee in Europe ,and I felt buying second hand fr9m black ARKit didn’t give the feel of buying a new product direct from the factory ,,,great review will watch again for anything else I might buy well done

I bought an iPhone 13 Pro from back market and its in perfect condition like new and it has 100% battery health. It was like 200€ cheaper than Apple and the packaging looked exactly like the one you got from Apple refurbished. So Backmarket is way better from my experience

A video buying an excellent phone from Backmarket would have been a lot better and useful. After watching this video i didn’t learn a thing, i still don’t know the battery percentage of an excellent phone bought from Backmarket, i don’t know if it has battery, outer shell and screen changed (like the apple refurbished one), so it’s simply an unfair comparision. Too bad, the idea of this video was cool.

I bought a phone from there too cheapest option and it had no scratches, just some gisgusting things all over like on this video so i had to wipe it a couple of times, also the charger cable wouldnt go all the way in, turned out the charging port was FULL of hairs and tiny specs of dust in the hairs, I guess they don't check the phones really because that was easy to fix with the sim ejector tool end, but still disgusting

Oh, good to hear, I have been eyeing their phones, but I'd be more likely to go refurbished anyhow, and they're currently far too close to release prices on the refurbished market, so I'll hold off for a bit.
backmarket does not even apply a lithium battery warning sticker where as apple does. i am not sure if that is legal or maybe they figure if the device is used then chances are nill that the battery will start a fire since most battery fires happen with new batteries.

Bought 2 different iPhone 11 Pro Max. Both had battery health issues. One was at 81 and the other was 79. Sent them both back the same day. Not a good experience with Back Market.

Interesting, I think they guarantee at least 85% officially... I guess only Iphones show battery percentage exactly... And maybe not if the battery is replaced with a 3rd party one, so I don't really see that working... Still an interesting idea, though...

I bought a refurbished macbook air 2018 from apple in 2019. The condition was almost like new. I used it for 3 years and then sold it again for 250€ less. If refubished, then directly from apple, the devices are like new!
Oh, that's great... Apple products resale value is underrated... They are expensive, but most consumer tech is almost worthless after a few years, except for apple's.
