No matter what everyone says, I'm really proud of the Asiatic Lions. They are a resilient species. According to the BBC documentary "The Last Lions of India," the Asiatic lion of today came from the remaining 20 left before they were protected from hunters. For their numbers to bounce from 20 to 500 of oday, that is a big feat. At least, while looking at these Asiatic Lions, we get to see the lions that ancient stories talked about. The Asiatic Lions are a part of the oldest civilization of mankind and their continued existence today is a legacy that we must celebrate.

visually African lions look like Mufasa and Asiatic lion looks like Scar...well characterwise both are king in nature...
Not all African lions are like that though. In fact, it appears from genetic analyses that some African lions, such as the Barbary lion of North Africa, and Senegal lion of West Africa (which can look similar to Asiatic lions in say having a small mane), are more closely related to the Asiatic lion than other African lions, such as the Kruger lion of South Africa.

+d d It doesn't look like that to me, because from what I see, the Barbary lion's mane wasn't necessarily black, rather, It could be partially black, and it was the Cape lion that had a fully black mane. In addition, the manes of the Barbary and Cape lions extended through their bellies, but Scar's mane does not extend through his belly.
Gamer2Pops Pops Truth is because both cape and Barbary lion are now extinct I think,and we only have a few black and white photographs to look at,we don't know exactly what they looked like,those pictures may even be large regular African lions. I thought also cape/ atlas/ Barbary lion were different names for same animal. Same with Caspian tigers.some say they were largest tigers,bigger than a Siberian tiger even,but only a few photos left

"Persian lion," "Indian lion") is no longer considered a subspecies but is just a geography-based name like "Central African lion" or "East African lion." The Asiatic lion (in the Gir forests of India) is the same subspecies as the West African lion and Central African lion and the extinct Barbary lion (a.k.a. "Egyptian lion," "Atlas lion," "North African lion") that is, _Panthera leo leo_ , and also used to live in North Africa, southern Europe, Middle East (Arabia, Iraq, Iran) and all over South and Southeast Asia. The South African lion and East African lion along with the extinct Cape lion are classified as the other subspecies _Panthera leo melanochaita_ .

Wow I'm so proud to be an Indian. We got a huge animal treasury. We got this very rare majestic Asian Lions, Indian one horn Rhinoceros, Asian elephants, Indian leopard, Indian bison, Royal Bengal tiger and so many more. Between I love Barbary lion. He is the true king. His large body and dense mane which goes under there legs. With pride on their face.

few facts are not true like size of their body and the number of lions in a group in recent years the Size of Asiatic lion has increased due to abundance of food and water and size of group member is also increasing like African lions, its may be because of less threat in wild

Dude, only 12 individuals of Asiatic lions were left in the whole world in 1910's, and that was at Gir, India, when the Viceroy and Nawab protected these poor animals. How come they got extinct in Iran in 2001? Don t spew false information. Get your facts straight!!

Bigger preys and smaller prey comparison seems to be annoying... Africa has Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest, Cape Buffalos... But, in Indian Forests you can't find them... You can only find Deers or others small mammals like wild boars...

More differences between them: The Asiatic Lions have bigger and rounder eyes, bigger noses but their faces are more narrow and have skinfold on their bellies while African Lions have smaller eyes but glide, medium nose, wider faces and the belly doesn't have skinfold (the skinfold on Asiatic lions's belly is the reason why they lost 3 parts of genes compare with their African cousins and this characteristic took at least thousand years to have). So the skindfold is the most important difference to recognize both of those kinds of lions but seem most people don't know these just judge on their sizes and the zoos they're living.

Yes they can, but it'll create genetic pollution (each subspecies will lose it's particularities), so it's something to be avoided.

We had three Asiatic Lions in Iran till 100 years ago but unfortunately they disappeared because of people hunting them. But still we have Leopard and Chethas in Iran.

I think some of these African lions were confused to be asiastic, and asiastic lions only have darkness on the end of their mane but Africans usually have it more. I even saw one that looked like an African lion and it was in a africa like landscape so how could it be asiastic

The question is....Do Asiatic lions also kill rival offspring? It doesn't seem that they need to tho, since they don't really have prides but who knows.
Infanticide is also common in asiatic lions as well. Although males and females dont mingle except during mating, males have their own areas. If the rulers change, any female group(consisting of 2-3 females and cubs) in that region have the risk of getting their infants attacked.

Yeah lions must have been transported there long ago and then continued to breed and adapt.
Actually they weren’t transported. The Asiatic lion and African lion both separated around 200,000 years ago when parts of the lion population migrated to Asia. They ended up evolving and adapting to the different environment.
