Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, is set in a valley surrounded by the Himalayan mountains. At the heart of the old city’s mazelike alleys is Durbar Square, which becomes frenetic during Indra Jatra, a religious festival featuring masked dances. Many of the city's historic sites were damaged or destroyed by a 2015 earthquake. Durbar Square's palace, Hanuman Dhoka, and Kasthamandap, a wooden Hindu temple, are being rebuilt.

  • Kathmandu is such a unique place that you can go centuries back with these heritages and also see the modernization. Its such an ancient city feels like going back in time. Completely different from the western cities.

  • If you Visit Nepal, Visit Chyasal. Chyasal is a small town, north of Patan in Kathmandu valley. Chyasal was a place where 800 Kirati soldiers died while fighting the Licchavis army who came from India. Kiratis defended the Kathmandu valley bravely against the Licchavis. This place Chyasal was the final battlefields before the Licchavis defeated the Kiratis. This is how the name Chyasal came to be. Chyasal means 800 in newari language. today a stadium is being built at Chyasal. I am proud to be Kirati.

    • @@Wonderliv When I was in the marketplace with my group I mentioned that I wanted to get those hats that Nepali men wear. One of the shop keepers overheard me and beckoned me to come look in his shop. I bought two hats from him. They're gifts for my uncles.😁

  • Going to Kathmandu in early October with my 27-year-old son to assist with a medical mission (we're not clinicians, just "helpers") and will be shooting video of our own. Looks like a fascinating place. Very excited to go. We'll be busy most of the time, but will take every opportunity we can to get out to see as much of the city as we can.

I am a Buddhist myself... and all I have to say is that all the religions and cultures are equally interesting and beautiful. There is beauty and meaning in everyone's culture.. so...
