An angry grizzly mother is moving in on them from 100 feet away and Ryan says, "You got that uh,... bear spray?" as calm as could be like he was bumming a cigarette.
Yep. Calm. And stupid is hell. They needlessly put seven lives at higher risk because they didn't prepare even though they had minutes of time to. One person spray, the other ready to fire if the sow persists after being sprayed. It was a disgusting display of two professional, well-seasoned hunter being complete jackasses.
@@rabooey you sound like a pro, what service is your hunting show streamed on?
@@rabooeydunno, they could've handled it better, but I don't know if it was as dumb a response as you make it out to be. I've gotta assume the camera operator had their own spray as well and I hope they were ready on it. But the bear never really came close enough to use it, if you think you're about to get charged, there's no point spraying when its 50+ft out. Warning shot should've come sooner, and they should've radio'd to the guy below before this happened to warn him - but we don't know if that already happened or when thanks to the movie magic of an edited show.
@@rabooey If I've got a gun on me, and a can of spray as well, and a bear CHARGES me head on, I'm going for the gun. Sorry rabooey, but a hot lead and copper dispenser is a lot more comforting to have than a spicy juice squirt can. To each his own. 👋
@@rabooey Now say that again without crying
Ryan is a freaking legend! Momma bear fake charge, he give that bear a warnig shot, tells the crew to go upwinds, then go after the missing crewmember. That´s more like a bodyguard then a guide. Legend!! Respect brother!
okey, i am definitely goin to grow a moustache
Still seems incredibly irresponsible for them to split from their solo producer who apparently didn't have a firearm on him. Really enjoy his show, but they could have easily cost that guy his life because of stupidity and arrogance
@@nk-dw2hm listen to the podcast. Especially “The Meat Tree” episodes. Janis can handle himself in the wilderness.
no doubt Steve is dead if Ryan isn't there with him during that exact moment. He's a beast for sure.
@@nk-dw2hm yes, but at least he got bear spray
Ryan: Bear Spray? Steve: *Does nothing*
Right!! WTF is Steve thinking, oh it will be ok.
When I watched this on T.V. and seen that...I honestly couldn't believe what was going on. I swear that he just didn't hear him because he was so dialed in on the bear...
He did say that he wanted to get mauled right? 🤷♂️
@@GlenCokeCo dialed in on the bear? I couldn't stop laughing because Steve is staring off into space and his friend had to call his attention back 🤣

These lads are pretty real. Hunting is mostly about trekking, glassing, stalking, butchering, humping heavy loads. Shooting is the thing I do least, and these guys are the closest any show gets to representing my hunting experiences.
I came to the comment section to say this exact thing
Just like hunting the taiban
Probably “easier” to continue filming, watching whats happening through a lense. I imagine it would feel like as if you’re not really right there, in the thick of reality, but rather watching from somewhere further away. Then again i haven’t the slightest how that mus be
😂
I like how Ryan is trying to hint to steven the whole time like 'hey it's about to go down get ready', and he's just like 'la la la la la' until ryan racks the bolt on the rifle and steven is like 'oh shit this is really happening'
I know it was really working my nerves in like bro pay attention
I roll a .45-70 on our land and the biggest predator out there is coyote, maybe a mountain Lion wanders through every once in a while. I’d never not have guns up in bear country, hope to hunt there some day
Steve - “I mean do I have a minute here or?” Ryan - “eh...I’d hustle”

That's my favorite part.
Steve seems like a kid on his first trip out of the city, Ryan saved his ass repeatedly haha
Ryan: You got that bear spray? Steve: *stares off into space*

Ryan just saved his own life, Steve's life, the cameraman's life, the bear's life, and the life of the cubs. Immense bravery and control. That right there is an efficient man, and a good friend.
Cameraman never dies.

I am at least as much a fan of Ryan as of Steven, probably even more!
Ryan is definitely somebody every outdoorsman should aspire to be like.
Agreed
Plus Ryan's stache game is on point
Love Ryan, but can't beat Steve! Do love that Cal tache though! 👌🏼
Don’t forget ol Janus
Ryan is the man. Love how he's so composed and always seems in control of the situation. I'd be on my third pair of undies by the end of the day
No guarantee he isn't, but keeping your cool is infinitely safer and he knows how to do that. Considering I got my leg screwed up by a boar hog, I will keep my distance from a boar grizz if y'all don't mind. I will happily wish anyone luck with it though!
I thought that, too. But in the moment, you'd be surprised. I was charged by a sow and her 2 (2 year old) cubs (so pretty much full size bears, [griz keep their cubs longer]) outside of Jackson, Wyoming. In the moment, I was perfectly calm and collected. Time slows down and you understand what you need to do.
@@georgemichael8742 what did you do
That'd probably keep you safer then your mate, I don't think bears enjoy chewing up shit....! I'd rather not test that theory though brother...lol

Steve was in shock. I’ve seen it before. Comparable to “day dreaming”
Dude was over stressed and shut down. It’s not his fault. He tried to overcome his brain toward the end but those endorphins and adrenaline hit him hard.
I thought this was the episode of “smell us now lady!”
It is!! But they didn't show it :(
They cut it out which is weird he says it as soon as it clears them
It is, but it's cut
Same
Wasnt that episode like 6 years ago?
Callahan is one bad dude! That bear charged, Steve starts backing down quick in Callahan never takes a step. #Bigbrassones!
Steve didn't have is rifle ready to go and as he was setting it he tripped walking backwards, he was getting into position. I also thought at first he backed up but he actually tripped and was dialed in to the situation
Man I love Steve, makes a great show but without Ryan we may not have had so many episodes. Not the first time Ryan has played protector. Respect.
Don't know the others but in this case - for sure you are right! What a blackout by Steven...no control of situation at all.
"You can't exactly reach down underneath there to check." Well, you probably could, but only once.
I love how Steve was saying he wants to get mauled by a Grizzly and survive, he had the chance and didn’t let it happen . 😂 Also ... Ryan: You got the bear spray? Steve: *Does nothing and ignored him*
Steve got the fever, we are all vulnerable to it. . . Stay safe folks
Man freezing on the spray either meant he literally froze or wanted to smoke her instead. Honestly the spray is pretty damn effective and gives her a chance to live another day. Killing her should be last resort..id think anyway
@@craigrock8444 I'd say he just wasn't thinking straight, he doesn't just shoot whatever is in front of him.
Ok
Craig Rock killing her obviously was last resort.. like he said, he was glad she turned and they didn't have to kill her.
I love that scene! Its a great example for controll and "no clue"! Callaghan is full in control and very aware of the moment and situation. Steven is just completely lost...no clue what's going on. Look at the situation Already minutes bevor the attack Callaghan knows that something is going on. Imagine what would have happened without him. The moment he gave his shot Steven wasn't even ready. If Mum would have charged in full speed without being stopped by Ryan, there would probably be no more MeatEater with Steve.... Great example for being aware/ awareness! Love it! Great of Steve to release this footage anyway even he's not looking good here...
Tbh this would probably be a majority of hunters. Especially those that aren’t used to woods with grizzlies. All I gotta say is thank god I’m in Quebec and NOWHERE else in Canada 😭😭😭
I wonder how Steve feels about that "breathing it's breath" statement after that Afognak Island bear attack.
Was that on an episode of meat eater

Another perfect example of Ryan being a world class outdoorsman. Cool calm and collected
If anyone deserves to sport a manly mustache - it’s Ryan. Such a beast - cool, calm, collected...my hero
its in episodes like this youre reminded of how great of an outdoorsman ryan is, truly in his element
Steve just froze up like a pointer. Good job on Ryan for being vocal and leading the crew out of that mess. Didn’t have to be that way with that encounter but makes for a good episode!
Steve’s wish to “tangle with a bear” is hilarious. I wonder if he realises that if that actually happened the most likely outcome would be him becoming that bears dinner....
If Ryan wasn't there Steve would have been a bear snack. He was just looking around the other direction like he was looking for butterflies. Then he acted like he didn't even hear him ask if he had that bear spray. To finish off he loses his balance and fumbled his gun when she charged. For someone who is literally a professional hunter for that moment he acted like he was 100% oblivious to the gravity of the situation. Unbelievable!!
Couldn’t tell if he was scared and was kind of zoning out and didn’t hear him, or if he really didn’t think the bear was actually coming toward them
Let’s go grizzly episode
For Real finally
so hype
Lettttssssssss goooooooo
True
I'm a huge fan of Steve but I feel like this could have been a lot worse if Ryan wasn't there paying attention. Steve's off talking about the elk herd not worrying about momma bear, doesn't listen to Ryan about making noise nor to get the bear spray when asked; THEN when the bear is charging he's panicking fumbling with his gun while backing up almost falling over his gear. Well done Mr.Callaghan ! "SMELL US NOW LADY!"
Exactly. I bet he learnt his lesson from this
Ever since the first time I saw this episode when it aired I've been blown away by how, well for lack of a better word clueless Steve was when that sow false charged them. From rambling about caribou, ignoring a request for bear spray and fumbling with his rifle when it started in on them. I get it crazy situation, just always figured he'd be dialled in exactly like Cal was.
Thats what i was thinking too. I'd figure he'd be more ready.
I suppose you can’t make perfect decisions all of the time, he’d probably of dealt with it correctly the majority of the time
Lol I bet their hearts were pounding as that grizzly was coming at them. I wish Steven would briefly go over the ammo he's using at the start of each episode (gun don't matter so much). It doesn't have to be anything extensive, but I think some of us would appreciate it.
He literally uses .300 win mag. Pretty much every episode that’s not a huge moose.
One of the best episodes to date. Does Ryan have his own show? Love that guy

"What's ole blackie doing" , "running for his life" 😂😂
He talked on JRE about having a close encounter with a grizzly and how he basically went into shock and couldn't move and how he was so disappointed in himself for breaking down in fear. I guess it's just like that quote "everyone has a plan until something something"

Man, I love being from Canada! 🇨🇦 We have some beautiful country and animals!
One of my bucket list hunts is a grizzly spear hunt.
That hunt may be the end of your bucket list unless you are chucking them from a helicopter ;)
@@chriss1151 This is hilarious 😂 I Imagined a dude inside a helicopter with a bundle of like 30 spears, and a highly trained pilot is trying to get a perfect position for him 😁
Man, I grew up thinking hunters were the scum of the earth. As I've grown older, matured and had time to think about things I've realized how much love and respect good hunters have for nature and our ecosystem. I really admire Steve and Ryan's passion for hunting and conservation, it's really awesome to see people who have an affinity towards this and treat it with the utmost respect. For years now, hunting has been a bucket list item. I'd love to get a taste of our grass roots and to be truly one with nature in it's rawest form.
I grew up with hunting family so i can't relate to the first part but everything else you said is dead on... Although there are bad people in every walk of life but with the media and anti hunting propaganda i can see how you would think they are scum when you were young but like you said after you mature an get your own eyes you can see pass the facade of those who don't know what true hunting is.
Love your show, this is the way it should be. Please tell Ryan that Brian from years ago at Cross Mtn says HI! Great guy and good times
Lol cal not messin around was quick on that trigger when she came at em
Wow. Ryan is a badass. Cool and calm . Telling people what to do, where to go all while keeping an eye out. Didn’t stumble or struggle to shot a warning shot. Id like to think that’s how I would perform under that kinda of pressure 😂
When that momma bear came running that got my heart pumping that went from chill to crazy quick
Ive had a similar experience like this in Montana, made my life flash before my eyes
Why did they cut the “SMELL US NOW LADY” from ol’cal?!?!
I’m from northern BC but now live in Vancouver. Boy do I ever miss home. The first time I learned how to ride a bike without training wheels I rode to the end of our street while my Grandpa went inside. Next thing I know I’m face to face with a black bear. I fell over and ran home. Had many more encounters with 1 coming up a steep mountainside through thick forest and being 3’ away. Scared the hell out of us and the bear who ran away. Grizzlies are on an entirely different level. You really realize how much they’re in charge when you’re in their presence. What an animal!
Ryan Callaghan is probably the best character in the show. He's awesome. I would have been asking for valium after that Grizzly mum barrelled towards them. I'm so glad they didn't shoot it. It had 3 cubs.
In college, when I was camping alone in Montana, I found myself within 15 feet of a grizzly with nothing more than bear spray and a 4 inch camping knife. Thankfully it left my campsite peacefully!
Grizzlies are the kings of the mountain. Big ole beautiful creatures
"You can't exactly reach down underneath there to check" I know a few Canadians that would though
Hey don’t be hating on Canadians. We’re not all from Ontario. Lol.
8:45 I'm new here. I was originally thinking: This is set up kind of like TV, even though you seem like a youtuber and gives a way more genuine feeling to it, but TV wouldn't usually put themselves in danger. Then the bear showed up and I am sorry for doubting you.
Looks like Ryan experienced hunter and not afraid to meet a bear. I would love to go for hunting with him. Definitely feel very safe.
Thank you for putting in the effort to produce such amazing outdoor content! This episode really really blew my mind! The beauty of this place, these animals just restores your faith in mother nature. I want to genuinely thank you and your crew.
Ryan is the real pro here. Makes Steven look like a rookie
U gotta respect how quick Steve was to go and try and find Janis and make sure he was okay
The government shut down the grizzly season here in BC in 2017. I hope they reopen it soon because I would love to hunt one.
do you think they ever will?
@@MichaelJacobi687 They’ll have to eventually, but it will still be a while yet. Reopening it would be a political suicide in today’s climate. The only thing that will change that would be for a few people to get mauled, which is bound to happen sooner or later if we don’t keep their numbers down.
One of my many favorite episodes so far!!
Cal could tell they were in a bad spot from very early. Steve didnt seem to understand the situation
Cal's "stay together" commands are so conscientious. That's much more about firearms safety than bear safety. If they split up and one of them has to fire at the bear again, there's a real chance the rest of the crew will be on the wrong end of gunfire. That guy is a true outdoorsman, level-headed and always thinking even when-perhaps especially when- there's nearly a ton of "I will eat you" running right at him.
Steve: You got that bear spray? Me: I got this bear uzi

They are a great duo for hunting. This just goes to prove, that not everyone should take a wild shot, and wait for their chance to take their shot and do their best.
When he unshoulders the rifle and Steve goes "Oh". That's when you realize it's getting serious. Playtime over.

O damn. New to watching your stuff. Never hunted before but you make it seem very interesting + the food you make looks so good I want to try it out some time. Never even shot a gun before though lol.
Why not learn
I remember my first brown bear hunt. I was a young 15 years old and I couldn't appreciate the animal fully until I set his paw on my chest and saw just how massive it was. I distinctly recall from other hunts never being comfortable with how quickly and quietly an animal that big an get close. A few times of smelling one before seeing it still gives me a shiver.
Callahan is magnificent and the momma bear is too! Doin her job well 👍🏻
I love Steve, but that encounter with the mother grizzly was painful to watch. Not saying I could do any better, but it felt like amateur hour. Glad he is leaning from it.
love how steven says he would love to get attacked and all this stuff, then when the bear is coming he is the most scared
I think the few minute segment where they deal with the mama grizzly is the perfect example of a good, professional, knowledgeable group. The camera guys got the shot without doing anything they shouldn't have, it's Steve's show but he shut up and listened to Ryan when the the heat was on, Ryan stayed calm and collected and directed everybody perfectly, they waited till they were clear before going to find Janis. It's beautiful to watch because all I can think is I'd have urine running down one leg and would've tripped and fell a few times.
I like how ryan already has a shot off before Steve is even ready to shoot
You can definitely tell who the real professional is lol and his name doesn't start with an S.
The bears here in Oregon come running when they hear a gunshot. They had claimed several elk last season that hunters had dropped. They are smarter than the average bear.
Bears are awesome creatures. Respecting them is paramount.😊
