In this video I continue talking you through the AM2 assessment using the NET pre-assessment manual, available off of the NET website.
I discuss the types of fault, apply them to a ring or a radial circuit, and discuss the reasoning behind the location description, rectification method and the need to test and prove the repair works.
I also talk you through a simple heating and hot water installation using a flow chart, which will not only help you diagnose where the faults might be, but may also help you get your head around how they are connected.
I’m not 100% happy with this video, as I think I could have done it better, so I’m going to tweak it slightly later on.
But for now, this will get you started.
If you don’t want to buy the XS training videos for the whole AM2 prep course then this guy is your best best bet

Passed everything on my AM2S first time and only failed just my fault finding section by 2 bloody marks, right now is sunday late evening, got my resit tomorrow (monday), just watching your video to recap has helped me alot. Everyone wish me luck! Thanks Adrian!

Another fantastic video, this will help with setting yourself up for the AM2 exam and applying the knowledge you should already have. I am currently watching this video series through first, and will then watch the series again from the begininning with paperwork and reference textbooks as advised. My only other comment is the books have now changed since these videos were recorded to the BS7671 2018:2, (brown book/brown flash), so the page numbers are different to what is said in the video. Top job Adrian! Thank you. (Brent).

Got my AM2s coming up soon. Just a quick question….. I was told on the pre-assessment that we would have to fault find on a piece of CAT-5. No problems there, but….there was no mention of testing the continuity of the CAT-5 during inspection and testing. As we are testing our own installation, and CAT5 being part of that installation, would the CAT-5 circuit need to be tested during the continuity stage of inspection and testing?
That is a great question and I would say absolutely. Otherwise, how would you prove this was working and it might cause you to fail when they strip your install down.
I was told simple things like using the wrong words in some test centres can fail you so, instead of cross connection it has to be cross polarity and things like that. Good video though really helpful got my am2 coming up 👌

This is hands down the best video ive seen for the AM2. I have mine next week. I have two questions dude. 1, can you open the accessories on the am2 fault finding section? 2, can you use the long lead test for polarity on ring final? Cheers.
Thank you 🤗 You can open the accessories to disconnect cables, but the cabling will look correct as the faults are introduced behind the scenes, which can throw a lot of people off. You could use the long lead method to test conductors through the circuit if you wanted too. The installation is so small that you wouldn’t actually need a long lead, the normal leads are long enough
Your video is so good and im currently revising for my AM2 fault finding that i need to resit at the end of the month. Personally this has been very good for my learning of fault finding especially with the boiler breakdown and also intermediate switching and ring finals, my only thing that i tend to struggle with at the moment is going with what test to start with ( IR or Continuity) would you tend to go straight for the IR test if you was for example getting an MCB tripping? with an MCB tripping it could also be a misconnection as well as a short circuit, im interested to know what route you would take first in regards to what test you would do as i struggle with this if im honest and want to obviously find the fault in good time to enable me to have more time on those more difficult faults, thank you for your video very helpful. You are more than welcome Jamie 🙏 They aren’t trying to trip you up, so keep it simple. If the circuit breaker is operating, then exactly as you say, you have a short circuit fault, so straight to IR tests 👍

Great video, Would an open circuit on earthing conductor be classed as earth fault or open circuit ?
Open circuit
one thing to consider is that the same board has been used for fault rectification several times by several people. If I find a fault that was left by a previous person but its not the fault they expected me to find in the exam, Do I get marked down or do I still get a mark? Because people are racing against the clock during the exam and they may leave some points loose or misconnected when they put staff back together and move onto the next fault. Some people have across this.

When you say test the pump, how do you go about doing that would that not be classed as sensitive equipment?
You can still pass 250V across line to Neutral, Line to Earth, Neutral to Earth. Or A low Ohm Resistance test to prove their is the correct resistance between line and neutral on the windings.

Great video , I’ve failed my fault finding twice now, out on site I can do it no problem but not on am2 , I can’t get my head around the heating fault they do it says programmer calls for heat but doesn’t work I messed it up both times , how would I find it would I just start with basic testing

When you spoke about the mis conection with the continuity tester, would it pick up short between L-N too? Or does it just beep on continuity of conductos? Meaning if i had a fault and i thought it was a short, but i use the tester and it beeps on L/N then the short is now ruled out and now it is a mis connection? Hope this makes sense!
If you use a continuity tester between line and neutral, you may pick up the resistance of any loads connected in the system, a low ohm resistance tester will give you more feedback due to the readings, rather than just a beep that could mean anything.
Hey, would a cross connection give you the same reading on a IR test as a short circuit ? Eg cross polarity live and neutral ? Thank you.
Quite possibly because anytime line and neutral are connected together with a resistance of negligible impedance, you get a dead short

@@ryanvesey8645 In the assessments a dead short is obvious and will be the most likely choice for that type of fault. A misconnection is more likely to be something that isn't working correctly, like on the boiler or two-way switching. If there was a short circuit due to a misconnection, the fault would be proved by testing end-to-end and realising that the connections are incorrect. Most likely, can also be operated by a switch.
Hi Adrian, Sorry mate me again :) something has been bugging me ever since i've contacted you a day ago and i just wanted to see if you could clear it up for me as i know you'll have the simple answer. during the AM2 there was a number of fault finding situations where the circuit breaker had tripped, as we discussed in my previous post i would initially look at an Insulation Resistance test for a short circuit etc however IF the IR test was good and all cables were fine, would you then start to look at a potential misconnection/polarity fault? If were going by the 4 faults they have in the AM2 (Open Circuit, Short Circuit, High Resistance and Misconnection) am i right in saying the only other fault it could possibly be is a misconnection due to the MCB operating? I don’t know the exact faults that NET have put into their assessment, but it is a possibility that you may have to check for a misconnection.
I had my am2 last Sunday and I have been out of the tools for a long time due to personal reasons . I have six month to complete the NVQ and the Am2 . I have not received my results yet but I really struggled and I didnt complete two sections of the installations due to some mistakes that I made. I didnt complete the fault finding because I got stuck on a fault and I took too long on it. I would like to ask you when your testing for a fault and you get a reading how do you know which fault it is ? Sorry it may sound like a stupid question. If you get no reading between a conductor than I take it s its an open circuit but what about the other faults ? is there anyway you can practice fault finding ?
Why do you only have 6 months to complete the NVQ and AM2? Fault finding and testing are intrinsically linked, when you are testing R1+R2 and R1+RN you are checking for continuity and proving polarity. When you are testing insulation resistance, you are testing between line and neutral for short circuits and live to earth for earth faults. You do that before you put a circuit into service and that is fault finding.

They are changing the qualification criteria now, during the new year you will need at least five years experience, 18 edition and the initial verification qualification,

If a socket has wrong polarity L&N does it cause a problem if an appliance is plugged in ? Does anything trip etc . Would the customer have any issues ?
Most appliance can run in reverse polarity and you would never know. Where it makes a difference is with switching, isolation, over current and protective devices.
@@Pure_electrical_training Thanks. I knew about over current safety issues. The fact that most appliances run without issue and customer would not know is scary. Also having no isolation is scary. Great information.
Does anyone know if C&G 8202 is the first step to becoming an electrician? This is the only college course I can find that does part time.
The 8202 course has taken over from the 2365 course, and it is the first step on the self funded route
