This is a review of an awesome cat enclosure, made by Purrfect Fence, that allows indoor cats to go outside safely.
Purrfect Fence did not pay me to make this video. But if you make a purchase through the link below, I will make a small commission. So, if you plan to get a cat enclosure from Purrfect Fence, please use this link. It would help the channel. Thanks!

  • Many people have asked if hawks and other birds of prey can get inside, and also about coyotes and other possible land predators. It is open on top, so birds of prey can get in. So, I have researched it a little. Most hawks are 3 lbs. or smaller and will not tangle with a full-size cat, three times or more bigger than it is. But small cats and kittens could be in danger from hawks. Large eagles, on the other hand, can take any sized cat. It might be possible for coyotes to jump into the enclosure because they can jump up to 8 feet. But in my opinion, most cats will detect its presence and run inside if a predator is prowling around. However, if you live in an area that has a lot of coyotes or birds of prey, a fully enclosed catio might be the better option for you.

    • If the enclosure is not too big you can put the netting up as a roof as well.

    • That was my first question - predators. I live in a wild place thank you for the answer. Now, what about keeping small animals out. It looks like it will keep the full grown quail and bunnies out, but I'm concerned about the babies getting in.

    • Thank you! My boys are almost 20# each. But not much "street smarts". They tend to panic and do something not smart. Yes. A barred owl in my trees and a bald eagles nest to my right and their perching tree to my left. They're back and forth all day. It looks like a fabulous enclosure for the right situation. I'm glad I got to see it!

    • This was exactly my thought. Once I was outside in my yard with my teenager and our cat, who was about 10lbs at the time. A hawk was coming down literally feet above us to grab my cat. I was surprised it was comfortable getting so close to humans. I waved my arms at it and screamed and it went away. I'm in Texas and our birds of prey are very large. But in other parts of the states, this enclosure looks good.

  • I moved ALOT growing up. My Mom would put butter on their feet (paws) and then let them outside. This quirky thing allowed the cats to smell their way back home by the scent of the butter trail they left, allowing them to know where home was. Thought I'd share.

    • That’s sweet but cats don’t get lost…. Also if they have a way inside ….window Always left open or preferably a dog door they are so much safer from becoming prey. Will come home sooner. When vet assist we always said show me a cat hit by a car and I will show you an owner that chases a cat like it’s a dog vs leave door open and go away not yelling name and shaking treats … peep find their cat cause they were driving around looking.. they are to sad to tell them they wouldnt have run if you did not chase …. They are not dogs … they are very strategic and establish territory starting at house … this takes time.. lots … cats that want out and are prevented will act as being hunted and cross street … it’s worth it to them but peep just add more prevention. It’s heart breaking

    • I know of people who have used Marmite. Generally the rule is to keep your cat inside your new house for 3-5 days, let it roam around freely. It will look out of every window at every angle and have a pretty good 3D map in its head (they really, truly do) of everything that it can see. So when it is let out, it has far less to deal with visually as it only has to fill in the blanks, and then the Smells and Sounds. . If a Cat was simply transported to a new house and let loose, it would have a literal massive headache, and be absolutely stressed as to "what is home and safe, and what is not", which is why so many cats "disapear" when people move home, they have no idea where "home is" and feel abandoned by their "Owners". . IMHO, anyone looking to take on a Pet of any kind should be required to take a course that covers basic things like the animal communication, habits, basic do's and dont's and so on. . On a separate note, all Dogs (and Cats Larger than standard "House Cats") need to be registered. There are excellent examples of this working well all over the World, and we do not want to see literal groups (packs) of Dogs escaping from someone's yard and randomly attacking people (typically small children). The registration in the UK (in the 60's I think) made a massive positive difference, there are other examples.

  • I have a cat who walked into my apartment a few times before I realized he actually wants to live with _me_ and wasn't just accidentally walking into the wrong apartment. He would love to have a yard like that. I wish! But I'm not even allowed to plant my own flowers outside my door, or have patio furniture 😮"for the safety of the residents." I don't get it. But you're so right about cats not getting overwhelmed by the outdoors if they're used to going out. When Ombre came to live with me, he didn't want to go out. It was below freezing! Now it's warmed up, he wants out, but doesn't go far. One time I closed the entry door to kind of follow him, and he ran back faster than you can say lickety split. His shoulders actually relaxed visibly when he saw me. Then he wanted to be back inside.

  • Thank you! I put this system up 9 years ago….it is a GODSEND! My cats are leaner and HAPPIER now that they can freely go in and out out the backyard during the day. I close the cat door at night so they aren’t in the backyard after dark. The only “maintenance” is that I replace the zip ties that secure the mesh to the poles twice a year….here in Florida the UV breaks them down and they become brittle - but the metal poles have held up very well. • The house that we bought had a chain link fence meant to keep in large dogs. When we got our cat at age 2, he had been declawed. But! The fence was just the thing for him and he goes out a couple of times a day. It has changed his personality so much. He is far happier and loves to hang with me when I garden. He has areas in the landscaping that provide hide-y spots where he can watch people walking to the park at the end of the block. If you can swing something to allow your cat outside safely, I believe it would seriously improve his/her life. He is thrilled to be outside, to be able to nap in the sun, chase bugs and chew on his cat grass. I am so happy for him and for the huge increase in his happiness and change in his range of his personality.

I hate litter boxes in the house so I also set up litter boxes and they use them and very rarely have to do cleanup outside of the box. I put collars on the cats with bells so any birds or little critters that may venture into their enclosure can hear them. It's been a win-win situation.

    • Yes, birds of prey are a danger to small cats and kittens. Large cats, not so much, unless you have eagles around. Land predators can get it. But cats are pretty smart and I suspect that they will detect a prowling predator and run inside or make an escape as the predator is climbing the mesh. If your neighborhood is full of dangerous predators, a fully enclosed catio might be a better option. Thanks for your comment!

    • Same. I have a large great horned owl that wants to eat my *small dog.* if she has to spend time outside unsupervised or without her much larger dog brothers, I make her wear a harness I fashioned out of leather with metal spikes, like a wolfhound collar. No bird of prey is getting a decent hold on her without grabbing a spike through the foot first.

They can run, jump, sneak about and have fun. We have a NON flat backyard that undulates up into a forested areaso we have to build it ourselves. This particular brand is NOT available in Sweden so we found and built our own solution. Now our trio is running in and out of the house using our SURE Petflat for chipped pets. So Purrfect Fence should have a look at the Euopean Market, especially the Scandinavian areas is a good spot to start. -Suggested improvements: DOUBLE upper fenceoff. Cats can climb in from the outside and fall inside. How about a DuoTopFlap function? Keep in and keep out should be a good idea here.

    @ShannonColleen@ShannonColleen11 ай бұрын
    • Thanks for the comment, Shannon! Those are definitely concerns if you have those animals in the region. Average hawks won't go after cats, but kittens are in danger. • One of my cats would have no problem in climbing that sh*tty bending fence. He's like a very confident mean wild fierce animal. People can never believe what he is capable of until seeing him. He probably was an Olympic gymnast in his previous life. He can climb walls without any support and look like the freaking spidercat. Child locks are just an easy play to him. He even finds ways to open things with certain types of normal locks on them. If he wants something he is going to find a way. Sometimes he is really scary... He would rule the world if he had opposable thumbs! The only way that could possibly work would be covering the top part as well with close and extremely regular inspections to the fence. I would still be very concerned nevertheless. Being so mean, he’s the type of cat that if he was plotting to kill his humans he would have achieved that a long time ago. That's why I know he loves us and I'm so glad that we're worth of deserving his love. (And yes, visits to the vet are the definition of Hell on Earth! We were asked many times if we didn't want to declaw, defang or euthanize him which is disgusting! It is a lot like yours but we used 8 foot steel rio bars pounded into the ground every 10 feet, and spread white bird netting the full length, ground to the top. The lower 3 feet of the fence is wire mesh and plastic mesh for strength and safety. My cats were 10 years indoors and now only one 14 y/o remains and she loves her big garden. The beauty of this design is that no cat can get out and no animal but birds and lizards can get in! It has been there 4 years and still perfect.

    • @@9LivesToLive Hi, yes, it is from our local nursery and is UV quality. It only comes in white. My cat has a large portion of garden which has a tree and shrubs, plus a modern , large kennel with comfortable mats if it rains (is autumn going on winter here now), as well as a small home made walk in house to lay in the sun while having an arched roof. She has fake grass and natural ground with grasses that grow in this region which is her favourite to eat, I am home all the time so let her in and out all day as she chooses, and that’s because of spiders and flies we have the screen door to the house closed. She is on my bed at night. The UV bird net is very lightweight, but strong. In 4 years it has not deteriorated, it is absolutely perfect. No stray cat can get in and my can cannot get out because, as you know, netting cannot be climbed, Also, I have a 3 foot square dedicated toilet area which has earth soil I buy from the nursery in large bags and is the cheapest, plainest earth which gives her natural soil to go in which I dig out and replace, plus there is other natural ground she can also use. It’s a wonderful set up and that garden is my own quiet place to spend time with her. Under the 15 foot long verandah of the house she has a couple comfy chairs to sleep on , too. She has lots of options 😃

The bird netting can be quite taught, does not need to sit slack, for no cat can climb it since it is unstable with regards to absolutely no purchase and my cat never even tried anyway. She could see beyond into the greater garden and watch birds on the other side in their birdbath below a big tree. Easy to erect and get the us netting for long lasting ability. • Fantastic video ! I can relate that the cats see the catio as just another room in the house and they do want, what we call “out out”. My space now is too small for this set up with to many neighbours cats that would get trapped inside as they already climb the fence. My cats do have a catio and it is used all year round. Another consideration is where I live coyotes do come into town and this is a safety concern as with the Great Horned Owls from above. I loved watching this video beautiful and informative.

    • Those are great concerns! I have seen coyotes occasionally at dusk, and I have heard owls, but not sure what type they were. I know that owls can carry off cats (I recently learned about this, and I'm sure most people are unaware of this!) My concern was eagles, because we had a couple pairs in our area, and the people who kept tabs on their welfare had found cat collars in their nests!

    • I had the same concerns. Since my outdoor space is smaller (about 40' x 25') I added 16 guage wire panels across the top. I also bring the cats in at night to avoid their bringing a surprise "gift" (lizard, snake) to my bed in the middle of the night. They have access to the screened porch overnight. I helped a friend with her small space and we added deer netting across the top. That keeps small animals and owls/hawks out and her kitties in. It has held up for over 5 years now. If your spot is small, perhaps that could work for you.

The only point we seem to differ on, is the other wild life. Mice, squirrels, chipmunks, birds, etc.. That's the main part of being outside the cats miss. It's what a cat, living it's best life, does. IMO. We will certainly be looking into Purrfect Fence. Thank you for the video!

    • @@9LivesToLive I live in Phoenix, and we have ALL the wild animals. In fact, there was a mountain lion in our neighborhood that my son ran into while walking one of our dogs, the other night (SCARY, but nothing happened, THANKFULLY). My cats go outside after 7am, until 4 pm, and 5 of my 6 stay in the backyard, but my latest rescue won't get with the program, even after a year, grrrr. She stays in the backyard MOST of the time, but does go in the front, and will go down the street, also. We have a block wall fence, but she jumps over it, easily. My other cats can jump over as well, but they don't, and stick very close to home (YAY). They also come in on their own, sometimes even before 4pm. Again, DaisyMay, the rebel, is on her own time, and sometimes shows up at 11pm, FREAKING ME OUT. My answer is 6 catios that I'm building, connected by 8 foot high cat runs. Thus far, I have 3 catios completed, with ramps, high shelves, trees, scratching posts, and other cool stuff to catify the spaces. The tunnels/runs aren't complete yet. Because of this, my cats come in at 4, but now have access to their catios all night long. My other 5 cats are THRILLED with the catios, and being able to be in them at night. DaisyMay is like, MEH, haha. She goes in them, but tries to figure out how to get out to her freedom. That's why I thought this type of fencing may work, but alas, it won't keep the wildlife out. Plus, I have a 1/2 acre, so this would be cost prohibitive. AND we have giant owls all over our neighborhood that come out at dusk. Your ideas are great, and I appreciate your content, as a fellow cat lover (all animals own my soul). So, thank you. Bless you, and your adorable cats 🐈 ❤️

    • @@energeticsoulhealer888 ya I really don't see how HOAs are legal, Many of their methods are unethical, I really think somebody needs to challenge them all the way up to the Supreme Court. Now this scotus would probably vote for the HOA but they really need to be legally challenged on a fundamental basis. Perhaps we can get various states' Supreme Courts strike them down. It's true that some people willingly agreed to it when they moved in, but they probably don't know what they were getting into. Nobody should have to meet anybody else's standards if they owned their own property. That's what property rights ARE. HOAs completely violate that and they presume powers of a government authority by demanding monthly membership and steep ones at that. I find both of these realities perplexing and stunning. HOAs have no right to be coercive regarding anyone's legally-owned private property or to demand money. If someone's demanding I pay them, and it's not for a legitimate debt, and they're not government, I call that extortion. I just failed to see how HOAs get away with being financially coercive and coercive regarding other's private property. They aren't the government. Ergo, I fail to see how they have any legal authority. A court may back them up because courts have done many dirty things, but that doesn't mean that a legitimate court would uphold such a ruling.

  • This is absolutely awesome ! I want to live in Jenny's backyard. I had 5 cats. Four have passed due to old age or disease. I always felt bad because they lived their life in an apartment. Strictly indoor because there are to many things that could happen to them wandering the streets. This is great though if you can do it

  • Nice, but we'd have to be on the watch too much for hawks that come down out of the sky through the open area in the middle. We had to put netting over the whole 20x25 fenced in area that our chickens are in; hawks would sit on telephone pole or in high trees and watch for opportunities..:/....little black fluffy kitty so cute!

    • Smaller cats and kittens can be in danger if you have large hawks in the area. The Red Tails, for example, weight 3 lbs or less, I don't think they want to tangle with a full sized cat of 10 to 15 pounds unless they are really hungry. But maybe I'm wrong.

    • @@9LivesToLive yep! My H wouldn't let the stray inside when she first came to us. We fixed her a place on the covered porch. She was only a couple months old accord to the vet. We have the big almost three foot high hawks here. I would sit on the deck with her on my shoulder and hiss when I saw a hawk fly over. She lived outside for a year but was super vigilant about whatever was above her. Now she's mostly inside, but still has her instincts and reflexes from her outside time. She won't even get up on my counters or furniture-- I assume because it's a higher more exposed area...happy me😊🥰

  • A cat that's free to roam will travel up to a few miles every night, to see their friends. Indoor cats is a strange concept to a British person who doesn't live in a block of flats. Everyone with a garden has a catflap

  • Seems like a great product.. not only will your cats love the outdoors but you will save money on that expensive kitty litter.. plus more than likely it will scare away rodents and other animals who might feed on your garden if you have one.. my cat hates going inside unless it's snowing 😂😂

  • You are the first person I have ever seen on KZhead or other social media who actually does it right!! Awesome! I am a wildlife biologist and a Birder, and so I have grown to have a serious dislike of outdoor, free-roaming and feral cats that so many people misinterpret as me "hating cats" which cannot be further from the truth! I have had cats most of my adult life even despite an allergy to them so I think that says something about how much I actually do love them!! I petitioned several counties to build such a cat enclosure where people can bring cats instead of abandoning them to become feral. I have helped someone install a very similar enclosure on their property, and it turned out great! I rent and so cannot do this myself but if I had the opportunity I would love something like this for myself and my own cats. Thank you!

    • It's cruel to keep cats inside full time. If that means that a wild bird's life is cut short, so be it. At least they both got to live free.
