  • Gary from Red Rock Humvee Tours is being modest when he says you have a 2% chance of being mad on one of their tours. Out of 65 reviews, they have a perfect 5-star score. Hopefully those who book a tour like that understand that they will have a memorable adventure no matter what. The fact that Gary is fine with his recoveries being out on KZhead suggests he is transparent and confident in is efforts to take care of their customers.

    • @@bruceleealmighty Engine placement is crazy. Never knew they were placed behind the front axle. That makes them front mid-engined!

      @UberLummox@UberLummox9 ай бұрын
    • @@UberLummox Although true the placement is behind the axle, and quite similar to how the corvette "midengine" C7 or earlier placement is. It's still not a significant characteristic of engine versus wheelbase. Unlike placement of several front wheel drive placements were planned. A transmission and transfer case was planned to reside significantly rearward as the Hummer didn't quite end up as repositioning of fuel took priority. The HMMWV has so many variants and configurations that it seems almost impossible to define it's absolute characteristics. But, the front, mid engine is definitely a salient point, no matter the power plant ultimately used. Not having the engine absolutely forward gave opportunity for the hood to slope characteristically the way it does, providing significant field of view and ground clearance or angle of attack for the wheels. It's interesting that there were so many configurations tested and proposed early on that we ended up with the vehicle that we did. In the early 80s 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines were tested in extremes of desert and Alaska the latter I was able to be a part of. I felt the 4 cylinder was quite torquee, but I was in the minority. The motor was still 5 litre and tested mogas as well as diesel. Multi fuel was optimal for some configurations but it wasn't considered practical for all uses. I kind of feel that the Japanese took away much of what we learned and made a practical decision to manufacture a vehicle that provided nearly all the advantages and almost none of the ultimate drawbacks that the initial HMMWV project had in store. If you take a deep dive into the Toyota MegaCruiser it becomes apparent that Japan once again improved on a test bed and provided a indigenous system that was replaced the moment they saw flaws and changes in mission requirements.

      @bruceleealmighty@bruceleealmighty9 ай бұрын
    • They government had to stick to their maintenance schedule, you see the government doesn't just buy a vehicle and maintain it only when it really needs it like most people do with trucks. Also they had contracts from the start saying how often they would buy each part etc.

    • I thought the same thing. However, most pitman arms are keyed in the spline so there is only one way to install it.

    • Yes, but you want to start with the wheel centered then adjust the pitman arm one or two splines as necessary.

  • You know you are a repeat customer when the fans of the channel know what vehicle you are talking about. As soon as I heard it the brief description "female repeat customer" I knew it was a silver expedition. I applaud her for getting out and living. Not the best vehicle but definitely not the worst choice I've seen on here.

  • Ever wonder how nice it could be to spend an entire month - even a whole week - without having to worry about documenting all these recoveries? Just doin your thing, enjoying the scenery and only interacting with the crew - instead of the camera? Sometimes I'll see the most beautiful sunrise, or a full moon and want to pull over to grab a few pictures. But have found it's far more enjoyable just to experience that moment - in solitude. It does a lot to help you achieve a few seconds of 'Goosfraba' - which most all of us really need these days. Anyway - idle thought.

  • Hey, Matt, if you haven't yet chosen a name for the off-road wrecker, I have a couple more suggestions to add to the pot: MORR Traction MORRtimer (pronounced like the name Mortimer) MORR-tivator Grand-MORR MORR-cini (because, apparently, Utah's state mushroom is the porcini*. I never even knew there was such a thing as a state mushroom.) The Aspen Quaker (because Utah's state tree is the Quaking Aspen*.) * according to the Internet, anyway.
