We Bought a Cheap V8 Range Rover

This week, Jack and Edwin make another questionable cheap car purchase, an unreliable classic V8 P38 Range Rover. They'll take it out on the road, see what it's like off-road on some of the UK's finest green lanes before taking it to a Land Rover specialist to find out everything wrong with our cheap 4x4...

You know how anything land rovery is really sought after here (wish I'd kept my old defender) but range rovers are so cheap up country. Especially in cities that are about to introduce emission zone charging. So picked up my girl in the midlands. Made sure I was up to date with green flag before driving here home. But Steve Toyer reckons I got a real bargain.

  • 'Tatey one chief financial officer' aka T81 CFO number plate came with the rangy when I bought her in March 2019. She needs a completely new wiring loom to fix the intermittent electrical issues, someone before me had hacked the existing one to death. If you buy an old P38 take out the body control unit (BCU) and open it up. Check that the printed circuit boards are not coming loose, that is what kills the BCUs. She still needs front axle oil seals, shocks and bushings but then should be pretty well complete. Paint needs doing properly too. I bought it for when I regularly visited the UK to see my old mum. It was intended too as a project car. Renting a car for several weeks is expensive, and you end up in tiny uncomfortable stick shifts and I prefer automatics. The plan was to do the work myself, which I started by replacing all of the cooling system, changing the auto transmission oil and filter and a general engine service. That heater return pipe that you found, is metal and I hadn't noticed it was weeping. The front hubs, CV joints, rotors / discs, suspension air bags, air compressor, air conditioning condenser and filter are all fairly new. Kyle fitted them because I couldn't get into the UK with the travel restrictions. It also had a complete new exhaust system, pity some low life loser had to steal part of it. Travel restrictions stopped me travelling to the UK until February 2022. As things happened, I used Tatey One for a few weeks until Mum passed shortly after in April. 2022. I then no longer needed the car and passed it to Kyle. Even with the cost, had Covid not hit, then it would have been cheaper and better than renting. If you fix the remaining issues, I think you will have a great vehicle. I am delighted to see her getting a new lease of life and probably being cared for properly. Living outside the UK it would cost me way more to visit and sell the car than to basically give it away. Enjoy it.

  • I bloody LOVE a P38. Done a full engine rebuild on my 1995 4.6 in the last year. Your engine disabled issue is probably the micro switches in the drivers door lock. I had the same issue, change the lock assembly and itll probably sort it. Also, thanks to Andy for the top tip on switching off the annoying reversing mirror dip! 😀

  • Love the P38, I’ve had mine for 11 years now and I’ve always done preventive maintenance on it so it’s been perfectly reliable. The beauty of owning an old Land Rover is that you know what’s next to go wrong because all the faults are commonly known so you can prevent it before it happens, simple. I certainly won’t be parting with mine.

  • I bought my £800 p38 2.5 diesel manual about 6 years ago. It costs about a grand a year to maintain. It's easy enough to work on. Just replaced all the air bags and EAS pump myself. 28mpg if you're sensible. The engine disabled is the battery in the key not making contact. Happens on mine and you just have to wiggle the battery cover on the key and try again! The remote on the key has the same frequency as WiFi so it can drain the car battery depending on where you park as it keeps the car awake. For the eas if it ever starts locking out definitely get an easkicker which resets it without a laptop. Also if it doesn't go up leave the door open and car running so it can get the air tank up to pressure before trying to go up.

  • I bought a 1 owner 2000 4.6hse p38 here in the US for $2400. I’ve had it for a year, and so far the only stuff that has gone wrong are wheel speed sensors, cruise control, wiper motors, window motors, gauge cluster, sat nav screen, AC controls, every bulb, and it leaks from the radiator, front main, rear main, oil pan and valve cover gaskets. So it’s going great!Might trade up to an L322👍

    • Mine only needs a head gasket, a transmission, the air suspension rebuilt (it works, but I think it needs new bags, and a valve block rebuild). The ac display is disappearing, the radio needs the code (the code I have no longer works). I think that will fix the problems…. 😂 It’s a 1996 SSE modified by Cameron concepts. It’s supercharged so it’s not slow (it’s not fast, but it was in 1996!). Probably one of the first ones they did. One of my favorite vehicles.

The $90k figure is what I paid to buy a 1996 P38 Range Rover in New Zealand in 1998.... second hand with just 28.000 kms on the speedo..... also it was a 4.6 litre HSE in Beluga Black with leather saddle interior.... I still own the Range Rover but it’s in storage and totally stuffed!!!! My daily drive is an 1990 3.9 V8 auto Range Rover in Camgoran brown!!! Again interesting video!!!! I loved this thing til I had to use it daily, neither myself or the rangy were ready for that situation and I don't blame the car at all, I did my best considering how rapidly the faults escalated and if nothing else I got her to the next relay point in her race so she had a chance! 😂 Very best of luck with yours, I hope you get it sorted and can enjoy what these wonderful, wafty, satisfying barges can offer once again 🤙

  • Just that reaction alone when the key was turned and it didn't show any faults said more than a thousand words :D My guess here is the system that registers faults, is itself, faulty

    • Nope, I can assure you it doesn't have any issues (that the information centre will tell you about at least 😂)

    • @@skyrocketautomotive670 In fairness, after having finished watching the video, it does look like it's in better shape than what a first glance would have me believe, knowing what they paid for it, with the exception of the electrical gremlins All in all, i've seen worse cars for more money. Pretty good going for a near 25 year old £400 land rover😅

  • As for fuel, I consistently got 15-16 litres per 100km open road, 18 in the city 😂 as for the suspension, you can bypass the compressor and install valves instead, and pump them up at the service station.
