Phil Jones made his first appearance for Manchester United in 712 days when he faced Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2022. That appearance came in his 11th year at Old Trafford.
But what has happened to the defender that was once backed as “the best England player of his generation”? Seb Stafford-Bloor explains how comparisons to a semi-mythical Man United legend put Jones on a pedestal, and how constant injuries knocked him off it.

As a Man U fan I have always thought he was unlucky, he came at a bad time in the club at the end of sir Alex’s career and was kind of the scape goat for everything bad happening during that time. The outrage over him not giving up his shirt number etc, that quote about his parents relates to what United fans think of him (Liverpool fans are hardly going to go to a untied player testimonial) a lot of the away humour was superficial, it was a bit more vitriolic internally.

His injury record, a couple of gaffes that every defender makes, and the fact he became a punchline, completely derailing his confidence, really hampered what could have been an incredible career. I'm so pleased he got a great reception when he returned, he looked like he can still do it, I hope he manages to find a move elsewhere and rebuild his career.

    • Worse than Bailly imo for injuries. Bailly has been fit for a good period of time at the club but has been overlooked by Ole and Jose at times needlessly despite his good qualities. With some good quality coaching and instructions from a manager and coaching staff, there’s a really good player in Bailly. I hope he shows this when he leaves this summer. Thinking about Jones makes me feel extremely sad and upset. I remember reading the article about him saying why he turned down a testimonial and it hits different. The guy tried so hard to fulfil all the expectations on him and he had himself but it didn’t happen for him. How low must you feel to think only your parents would turn out for your 10th at a club like United? Really sad.

  • This reminds me of the Sammy McIlroy story. When he arrived at United from Northern Ireland in 1969 he was hailed by some as the new George Best, and although he went on to play over 300 games for United and won an FA Cup winners medal, he was clearly never going to reach the legendary status that Georgie had. He also signed at a time when many of the European Cup winning team were coming to the end of their career. He himself was Matt Busby's last signing. What was to follow were United's barren years as well as a relegation to Division Two (now the Championship). I dare say that every club has similar stories. Peter Marinello at Arsenal for example.

  • I remember his first two seasons when I would see him run with the ball from defence all the way to the box and it was looking so natural and almost effortless. He wasn't perfect by any means, he seemed unpolished, erratic, even all over the place sometimes but it was so exciting seeing his commitment and physicality. I always assumed that Fergie, Rio and Nemanja would help him eliminate his flaws and honestly thought at the time that his potential is boundless. But then Fergie left. Then Rio left. Nemanja too. Then the injuries came and with every one he looked less and less the player who he could have been. I would lie if I said I never wanted him out of the club, because there were times when I did. In hindsight, I know that it was not his fault. And seeing him coming back against Wolves, he seemed so assured, solid. It was like seeing another player entirely. He was the only light in the darkness of that dismal team performance. I know I'm basing this on one game only, but if he brings his fitness up to par and his injury bad luck finally deserts him, I believe he still has a lot to offer to the club. I was actually a bit relieved when he refused going to Bordeaux on loan and hope he will kick on.
