Inside the World's Most Spectacularly Failed Coup

2021 ж. 26 Қаз.
1 454 749 Рет қаралды

In May 2020, American mercenaries and armed Venezuelan rebels attempted a shambolic coup d’etat against the Nicolas Maduro regime. Rather than a glorious victory and toppling a socialist dictator, the planned invasion ended in disaster, deaths, and two ex-Green Berets in captivity in one of that year’s spiciest geopolitical quagmires.
“Operation Gideon,” as it was dubbed by its mastermind and former special forces soldier Jordan Goudreau, drew in a bizarre cast of Trumpworld heavy hitters, the CIA, viral tweets, and a Kraft family heir and was supposed to somehow overthrow the Venezuelan government. Instead, it became an internet laughingstock. But new interviews with mercenaries who were there reveal the backstory is even more complicated than previously thought.

    • Its called audio editing. Play edited audio while having a flow of visuals to distract you. Fake news media, whether left wing or right wing, have used this technique forever now. You can only trust that the audio wasn't spliced if you have a continuous shot of the speaker saying/doing what you're hearing. So when you hear something that sounds a bit ridiculous like this, you can bet it's probably audio splicing.

Private Security Companies are defensive only - they cannot undertake offensive operations, whereas mercenaries can undertake both defensive and offensive operations. The difference between Mercenaries and privateers is that mercenaries are freelance and can be hired by any non-state actor, whereas privateers are hired by an organised government Edit: so in this case Silvercorp SA could be considered privateers

The Americans attempted to stay in the boat and pretend to be fishermen, but the military saw through it and captured them. Just imagine... you've just heard that the op is blown and the other boat is down. What would you do in that situation? The option of trekking through the mountains for weeks - possibly without the right equipment and the army hot on your trail - isn't particularly appealing. I could understand why just pretending to pass off as fishermen might seem like a valid choice. In hindsight it wasn't - but that might just be because the military knew what boats to look for.

In the US, contractor generally means construction. So it really flew under the public’s knowledge for far too long that these ‘security contractors’ were in fact just corporate mercenaries.
