Part 1 of looking into a few ways we can light a small space on a budget. I'm hoping this little series will help people to think about the ways in which this can be achieved and be able to build on these ideas.
Mirrors and mirror board are great tools for bouncing hard light where you can't fit a whole lighting unit - there's a variety of applications for using mirrors in your lighting and in this video we can see how it helps to add a light "shooting through" the window, where we would otherwise have no tools to put a light outside of it. Now as with anything, this isn't perfect - depending on the size of the mirror, distance of light from that mirror and distance of mirror from blinds - it's tricky to light up a bigger area. But for close ups and detailed shots as shown in the video, this sort of thing can save you in a pinch if you have absolutely no way to put a light out of that window!

Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera
Lens:
Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 ART
Genus Eclipse Variable ND
Hoya UV/IR Cut
Metabones Nikon G - BMCC Speedbooster
Only took me 4 years to find youtubers that focus on actual usable lighting tips, not just three point lighting. Thank you
Thank you Isaac!!
Respect for the way you were able to turn a limitation (lighting within small bedroom) into a quiet masterclass on the aesthetic awareness, detail-orientation and manual creativity of experienced light workers
Thank you so much for the kind words. It's crazy what you can do with lighting when you sit down and think about it, there's many possibilities and workarounds to get things done on a budget :)
7 dislikes? Who dislikes pro tips? This was fantastic btw. Thank you for sharing, Rob.
Right. Just trolls is all.
KZhead put me on trending - I've been deleting bot comments and watching my dislikes balloon upwards for 24 hours haha. Thank you so much! :)
I agree! Great tips! Why dislike? Jealous
Wanna know who? Idiots do.
@@RobEllisCinematographer how can you tell bot from non bot?
This man is single handedly making explosive stuff. Absolutely what I wanted rn.
I'm watching a lot of "cinema channels". Found yours recently and absolutely love the way you teach. Super helpful.
Thank you so much! :)
Excellent!!! 👏👏👏 Cinematography often demands to build our own accessories, like the pioneers of cinema. Many of the equipment and accessories that we find in the market are designed many times by cinematographers and staff of the lighting and grips departments. So, if we are smart, we can make a snoot and adapt it to our lights, also cookie, sandbags, gobos, flats, diffuser frames, apple boxes and more and save a lot of money !!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!! 👍👍👍😊
2:00 seems like its a job for a snoot ! i love it when these jobs come up because i love saying "snoot" :D
Definitely a job for a snoot yes! Hahaha love it!
Im learning so much from your videos, seriously no one is doing lighting tutorials like you. easy to understand and amazing results. i have a small room and this was so perfect. please keep going and i hope you turn this into a series!! i can't wait for part 2 !! :)
Brilliant, thank you so much for sharing your pro tips! 🙏🏻
I absolutely love this breakdown and how you presented all of the issues like being on the second floor. This was incredible. Subbed
Loved this quick, effective breakdown of making bigger lighting setups more accessible for smaller productions, great work Rob!
Please never stop. I'm learning so much. 😭♥️
thanks for this tutorial! 3:10 was a bit of unintentional comedy "it means we don't need another light for Phil"
Hahaha didn't notice that until now! Thank you :)
this channel is amazing, i had no idea of the light effect in cinematics shots, but Rob explains it so good! Thank you!
Hey man! Really love those breakdowns! I'm learning and haven't thought using mirrors that way! Wish you the best.
Dang, that ended up being so simple and so effective.
It's a neat little trick!
Really clever stuff, mate. The mirror tip is a revelation.
I really enjoy your grading in those tutorials. Very cinematic.
I’ll never understand why people go out of their way to dislike? Makes zero sense. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this video. It’s some good pro tips.
KZhead put me on trending - I've been deleting bot comments for 24 hours and watching my dislikes shoot up haha! Thanks Noah!
@@RobEllisCinematographer Hey rob loving every video since i've found you. You have plenty of lights, can you make a video on which are the most essential and you can buy on a budget? thanks for your videos !
These light shaping techniques are gold. Simple household items that turn into useful tools. Thank you
I'm learning a lot from your channel!!! Appreciate how you are putting quality content here. Not everyone would give such in depth information for free. I hope you get more subscribers. Just thank you for the great knowledge you are sharing with us. You are a talented teacher👏
I'm finding this channel really helpful! I've been editing professionally for just over 10 years and recently decided I wanted to start shooting my own stuff, but without going overboard on loads of kit. These vids have been really useful!
Diagram plus practical example is the best way one can teach lighting thanks for putting in so much efforts. One of the best channels I've stumbled upon.
Necessity is the mother of invention 👍
Absolutely!
This is dope! Love content like this! As I’m starting a short film In the winter. Content likes this definitely helps very much. Thank you !
If you made a lighting course I would 100% invest! Looking forward to seeing more
It may be on the cards! :) thank you!
absolutely
Thank for shedding some light on 👏🏽
That looks so nice. I want to try it with a CTO and the camera set to tungsten. Lighting is so important. Thank you!
Still here. i'm going to watch them all and then watch them again. Learning a ton. Thanks, I'm already seeing progress!
Happy to hear it! :)
I really love how you put together your videos. I've been looking for a channel that doesn't have any fluff and doesn't waste my time at the beginning of the video. Yours are informative and to the point without feeling rushed. I feel as though i could follow along with your videos and produce amazing work. Thank you for your videos, i'm really glad to have found tutorials that are straightforward that i don't have to skip through.
Thank you for the kind words! Absolutely, I get so frustrated with videos where I have to skip through the fluff too, so I try my best to avoid that and just stick to the info! Glad my videos have come across that way and are helping! :)
loving your channel. So inspired!
I have been watching your videos for a long time now, and you have helped me so much with the basics and techniques. Really love your content and the new lesson style videos your doing. You have so much talent and you still consider the little people:) thank you for doing this!!

Great video. Even greater solution to tight spaces lighting
I feel like I am listening to a story! You would have a great audiobook voice. Love the channel.
Thank you!! That's crazy, I hate my voice haha but I think that's quite a common thing - I wonder how you get into that field of work, I think I would genuinely consider it! Thank you for your support on the channel :D
The mirror idea is so perfect! I can't believe I never thought of that before. THANK YOU! I am actually having the exact same issue where I need to light a bedroom and the bedroom is on the 3rd floor but I want moonlight shining in with blinds streaking across and the mirror method just solved that.
thanks, for all that you do for our community. you're incedible.
I've just stumbled upon your channel last week and you have the best explanations of cinematic lighting that actually look KILLER. Some people will do lighting tutorials and it just looks okay, but your explanations are so in depth and look stunning. I constantly look forward to new videos from you.
Thank you so much, that's very much appreciated!! :)
