I've shot a Beretta that uses the rotating battel lock up like this (the PDX-4 Storm); smoothest thing in 9mm I've shot yet. Seeing that same concept in what looks to be a smaller package is very interesting to me...

It is for lock up to prevent hot gas and fouling, or even catastrophic case detonation. Rotating barrels are cool, but most modern firearms use a tilting barrel like the original Browning design. There are also examples of so called blowback guns which rely on the weight of the slide to slow the inertia. There are many ways of doing it, especially with low pressure straight walled pistol cartridges.
