8W Rechargeable Soldering Iron Review & Teardown | Voltlog

$2 for 5 PCBs Any Color jlcpcb.com These days there is a wide choice of portable soldering iron and I think very few people still consider gas powered soldering irons who were quite popular 10-15 years ago because of their portability. Now you can get simple 8W rated USB powered soldering irons for about $6 or a more polished soldering iron like the TS100 which normally takes a DC input from a laptop power brick in the 20V range but since USB Type-C with Power Delivery is a popular thing these days, you can also power it from a power bank capable of at least 12V. But this will be in the $50-60 range and you need to purchase a special power delivery trigger cable separately. However today’s video is not about these two options, I’m gonna show you something that fits in between these two.

  • So many negative reviews that I now ignore them and try for myself. I have one of these units and have tried to stress test it. Mine works perfectly. It won't replace my TS80 but I use it a lot inside the enclosures of industrial machinery...very convenient and thus far, reliable 👍

    • Yeah I'm pretty sure it's literally a custom soldering iron tip that attaches to standard ego-style vape devices. That's why the power dial is marked in volts rather than temperature, and also why there's that 10-second limit: you don't want the heater of a vape device to stay powered for longer than that in one burst, or stuff would start burning. I think the iron tips could make sense for someone who is already carrying a vape around with them, just for occasional use, but selling the whole kit together like this seems very weird to me because it's so clearly a quick and dirty hack that doesn't work very well, as you found! (Those $5-or-so 5V USB soldering irons are handy if you have nothing better available, but keep in mind that there's not really any temperature regulation at all. I found that mine will climb well beyond 600°C pretty quickly! There's not much thermal mass behind that temperature, and it's fine for soldering wires, simple components, etc., but you may want to be careful before using it with more-sensitive components :) Personally I doubt I'll ever use mine again as I can power my TS80 from a USB power bank, and that's a lot more convenient. Also I think that Ralim's third-party firmware for the TS100 and TS80 will let you heat the TS80 from a regular 5V USB port. It's not going to be very fast, of course, but it might be good enough in an emergency!)

  • I've got two e-cig bodies, both powered by 2x18650 cells. And since I quit vaping like 4 years ago, I converted them both to soldering irons and MY GOD these are awesome. 25-30W and these beauties work like a charm, no stupid gas ones, no expensive usb ones.

  • I bought a similar one one, with the Micro USB port in the back, and it works fairly well for simple soldering. It starts to struggle heat wise on anything with a ground plane, but soldering wires together on the run, it does the job. So far, I haven't had any issues with the battery at all, and seems to last a while. It doesn't compare to a proper soldering iron, like the T12 irons I'm using mostly now, but it's super handy for soldering on the run!

  • Seeing how they modified an e-cigarette to make that, it would be interesting to see if the concept could be taken farther: make an iron soldering tip that go on those beefy 18650 e-cigarettes in place of the whole tank assembly. I guess there is kind of a norm because of the number of after market tanks, and the DC to DC part would be already taken care of.

  • I had one of these (you can buy the tip only) and connected it to my old e-go vape. It's got enough power for simple surface mount work and fits neatly in a tiny business card box, but it struggles to solder to large ground floods or chunky wires. It also fares badly with lead-free solder due to the higher melting point. On a more useful note that USB 8W iron I built a control board for - initially tried to estimate the tip temperature with the temperature coefficient (via shunt resistor) but it was too unstable so now I just blindly PWM and adjust duty cycle as needed - you're welcome to have the schematic and firmware if you want to build one. Thanks for the great video :)

  • It is indeed an eGo e-cig body with a soldering iron screwed on, the eGo had the same 5 clicks protection and exactly the same recharger. One of the most annoying things was the same you've mentioned, you couldn't vape it while charging. It even has the "security feature" preventing the eCig.. ahem, sorry, the soldering iron, to keep running for over 10 seconds :D

  • Is there any chance you shorted the circuit when you were testing the voltage? That might have fried the fet. The tip will have a higher resistance than your meter probe. :-) Love the fact that someone has repurposed a ecig battery pack and bolted on a soldering tip.

  • why not buy one of these, for the housing, momentary switch, and ability to mount this tips, then replace the electronics on it with something more robust? Maybe even find a way to mount some kind of potentiometer or PWM for basic temperature control? PWM would be most preferable, but a potentiometer would be simpler.

  • The Evod twist is a standard vaporiser (Ecig) power source. The 10 second time out is a feature of almost all regulated vaporiser power sources. Most interesting to me is the tips with the 510 connector (an industry standard for vapourisers). Since I make a lot of my own stuff and have the 510 sockets, I think I'll buy some tips and make something that runs off an 18650 Li-ion battery. It would also be possible to make something that uses an ATtiny85 for a PWM heat control and to turn it off if the battery level gets too low. ETA: it should be almost impossible to damage the electronics on an Evod twist. It has protection to stop it firing a load that is too low, so something else is going on here.

    @nemisis010@nemisis0104 жыл бұрын
    • It all depends on how much you plan to use something like this, for a quick job, soldering a broken wire in some remote place, I wouldn't mind the stiff cable but if I were to use the usb iron more often sure I would be bothered by the stiff cable or by the fact it doesn't regulate temperature.

    • Yep - had one for about a month now - used it for a few small jobs. Other than the 10s timeout, it's really quite handy. Just received the hoof tip today - much better having some decent surface area on the tip for most jobs - seems to heat up even faster too. Must admit I was hoping it'd be a sealed Li-ion battery inside though - now I'm worried about the LiPo turning into a grenade if I leave it discharged for too long (leery of them after experience in RC car batteries I guess).

I'm inclined to think the person who selected the red LED for the charger may be green/red colour blind. If it's not charged it's pale green, and if it is it's dark green it's charged.
