On this episode we learn why the old Ford F-150 and F-350 are so tough and well made. How does the straight six seem to last forever and why an old heavy duty diesel truck may be slow, but will never ever die.

    • Whoever was responsible for "Cash for Clunkers" should be either drawn and quartered, or burned at the stake. I bought a used '94 F-150 4x4 5 speed 300 cid "Big Six" (screw that metric crap) 290000 miles. Had to replace starter, and water pump. It leaked oil until I started using 20 w 50. The body looks like your "Gunsmoke", but it runs good, and does what I need it to do. Haul trash cans to the garbage dump, get firewood, and take me to the shooting range. Who needs an expensive new truck?

  • I worked at a dealership during the cash for clunkers nightmare and these stories are true about the 300 straight six engine. We had a mechanic that came out into the showroom and asked everyone to come back to the garage and watch the straight six keep running after he had poured in the material that was supposed to kill it. He talked about how quickly the other vehicles would stop running (most almost instantly) and how that truck just would not die. He pulled all the other vehicles out to the back lot/salvage area with a forklift, but he drove the Ford out there under it's own power. I have always been a Ford guy, but I bought a 89 F150 with the straight six because of seeing for myself how bulletproof the engine is. I have over 200k miles on mine and it has been my daily driver for the last five years.

For whatever reason diesel fuel is at least .50 cents a gallon more than unleaded where we are. Apparently, in order to lower unleaded fuel prices they raised diesel fuel costs, knowing that truckers will have no choice but to pay it. It gave a sense of fuel prices coming down a bit but it only went down for a portion of drivers, not for everyone. It sounds like you are paying a lot to fill up now. Good luck.

  • Retired or just tired automotive engineer, in the 60's just worked for my company. But starting in the 70's had a new boss called the EPA, then the DOT, then NHTSA, and to a certain extend bean counters and even automotive insurance companies. In 1965 we had about three government agencies, today over 1,500, created to advise congress since the average congress person doesn't even know how to blow there own nose. If you thing the automotive industry suffered, look at the number of companies that disappeared but general aviation became a complete disaster. Whenever I hear a politician say we have to move forward, would rather hear them say, we have to move backwards when this was the land for the free. What is the major criteria to become head of all these agents? Just one, help the present president get elected, not any knowledge of the agency they are head of. Fleet I would be ashamed to put Ford, Chevrolet, or GMC in large print of the tail gate of these pickups. After six years of road salt, big pile of rust, same with Toyota. Until 1949 all vehicle had about 0.5% nickel added to the steel that made these vehicles practically rust proof, died in 1949, they year Detroit rust was invented. Did you know it cheaper to manufacture a solid state engine control computer than a mechanical distributor! The ECU is strictly unrepairable , throwaway, and some cost way over a thousand bucks to replace. Can go on and on on this subject and no concern about losing my job, lost my job years ago to China, also no thanks to our government.

    • Constantly evolving emissions and mileage requirements mean they can't, it's just a necessary evil. And aside from the drivetrain, if you think these old trucks will go for half the miles without major maintenance/repairs as modern ones, you've got nostalgitis. I love old vehicles, have always owned at least one (currently a 1986 K5 Jimmie trail truck and a 1968 Plymouth Barracuda notchback project car), and presumably always will, but we've come a long way in terms of overall reliability. No one drove their 70s/80s trucks 250,000+ miles with nothing more than consumables (tires, shocks, brakes, fluids, etc.) back in the day, and if a new truck doesn't do that, we're insane with outrage. Yeah, electronics are prone to periodical failure, but they're easy fixes that anyone can do (as opposed to old mechanical systems that required considerable knowledge and ability to diagnose and repair) and they're otherwise pretty bombproof.

Most didnt make it much past 100k miles without major issues. These F series trucks in this video are no exception. Theres tons of these aged F series that crap out at 200k miles. The fact that a handful go further isnt a testiment to the engines longevity, just a testiment to the better owners. Just look at the service intervals for older cars vs newer ones. That tells you alot right there. Newer cars need far less maintanence to go further than older ones.

    • @@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney Electronics are easy fixes? Do you have access to the high priced laptops and programs to re-program the stuff that needs it? You need knowledge whether it is the "old mechanical systems" or the modern electronic ones. Ask someone that has hundreds of dollars invested in an electronic problem that mechanics either misdiagnose or......? Brother knows a guy that had a brand new truck that they COULD NOT find out what was wrong. Engine would shut off, call the tow truck. Get it back and it would do the same thing days later. This happened multiple times. He was pissed! The dealer ended up giving him another truck because they couldn't find the problem. That was a GM product.

For example my 6.9 idi- smash pedal to floor, engine gives 100% fuel no questions asked. Modern diesel- smash pedal to the floor, engine ECM sees driver want 100% fuel. ECM then checks to see if all sensors/ parameters are good to go, then rolls on the fuel to 100%. Even it all happens in a split second I still swear I can feel it and to me it takes forever.

    • Wayne Baird My 53 Chevy pickup had two keys. One was just door lock. But in order to lock doors you had to lock passenger side from inside only.

    • I pulled the tumblers out of the doors on my 76 and 87 F250s and rebuilt them to take the ignition key. Half a day well spent

  • When door handles were door handles. The solid sound the doors make when closed. I had an '86 F150 4x4 Supercab 8ft box with the 302. Loved my old Ford.

  • Makes me nostalgic, I miss my 1989 F150 that had the 5.0 5 speed combination. Mine actually had the chime instead of the buzzer but it was a XL model.

  • Gentlemen thank you! I have inherited an F250, it’s a hybrid between the two trucks here, and it was destined for the scrapyard. I told the family I would take it, and with a little love, it has fired right up like the day it rolled off the assembly line!

  • I have an 87 F150 4x4 that was used for years as a farm truck in Kansas and Missouri. It only has 104,000 original miles on it. The valve covers leak a little oil, and I just overhauled the cooling system and installed a new radiator, but it starts every time I turn the key. It only has one little rust hole (about 3/4" diameter) on the passenger side rear wheel well (by contrast my wife's 2002 Z71 Silverado has completely rusted out rocker panels and the wheel wells on the bed are rotted out). My old truck has faded two tone blue/silver paint and a few little dents and some surface rust, and the window lift motors are shot, but it's just keeps on rolling. I love that truck.

  • Wow I was a tech in a ford dealer in the late 80’ to min 90’s before be coming a fleet tech for a city agency and you are right those trucks are tough from the Diesels to gasoline with the Infamous infamous veritable Venturi carbs and of course the M.C.U controller system lol I do miss those days and have to say working with those systems definitely made it easier to work with the newer systems I still from time to time have to dust off so of the old tools and skills to help out some techs with those older models which I don’t mine because to see this trucks still on the road is great

  • I had a 95 Eddie bauer edition with the straight 6, manual transmission, white with tan bottom. I absolutely loved that truck. I recently was looking at possibly getting another one and was absolutely blown away at the prices people are asking for them. There is currently a very nice version of that truck on Ebay being sold by a dealer asking $33k. While that's the highest I seen, there are multiple other for $20k give or take. I paid $5K for mine back in 2005/2006. Currently wishing I had never sold it. No way I would ever spend what they're asking for them now.
