  • A thing to note about the AMD model having a socketed Wi-Fi card. Lenovo whitelist Wi-Fi cards in the laptops BIOS so only certain models of cards will work so you couldn't just upgrade to a Wi-Fi6e adapter when they are released. It's a real pain. Apparently this is done for FCC compliance as only certain cards are tested with the antennae design.

  • Brilliant review and it validated my picking the AMD version; I was deciding between those two just last week. I currently have a thunderbolt port on my ThinkPad T480s which I never used (the Nvidia MX150 Max-Q dGPU it comes with handles all my graphics needs with ease). When it came time to replace the T480s, I was disappointed that the dGPU was no longer offered in the T14s line (which supplants the T4xxs line) but then I researched the AMD version and found that the Radeon Vega 7 iGPU on it gives a performance that's close enough to that of the dGPU on my T480s to fit my needs. Other advantages of the AMD version is faster DDR4 memory (3200MHz vs 2667MHz) but, based on this review, the SSD seems noticeably slower which is bit of a bummer. All in all, the AMD is indeed the pick of the two T14s versions unless you absolutely need an external GPU (or the 4k screen, which is not offered on the AMD version).

    @sammyt3514@sammyt35143 жыл бұрын
    • Lenovo often use multiple suppliers for screens, keyboards and SSD's. The SSD speed *might* be a bit of a lottery and *might* not be dependent on the CPU. Regardless, it is actually cheaper to just spec the lowers size SSD, buy your own and install it.

      @tnetroP@tnetroP3 жыл бұрын
    • @@tnetroP I know and the general consensus is that Samsung SSD's, which I have on my T480s, are the best Lenovo offers. Hopefully that's the one I'll also get with the AMD version I ordered.

  • I bought a T14 (non-s) with Ryzen 7 and 32GB RAM about a month ago and it fully replaced my desktop PC. It can handle older and less graphics intensive games very well and the cpu is insanely fast. ATM I'm using it with a Dell 32" 1440p Monitor over HDMI, but I also ordered some Dell 24" 1080p monitors with daisy chain support which I will use over USB-C to DP, planning on a setup with 32" 1440p + 3x 24" 1080p.

      @mustnoor@mustnoor Жыл бұрын

  • For 14 in laptops both are excellent business machines. Very good keyboards and displays. The internal camera on the intel one was a little better than the AMD one but both will easily get the job done. Would it be nice if they could fit the camera on the phone you reviewed the other day in these machines? The internal microphones on the Intel machine sounded very flat and slightly muffled. The AMD one sounded a little better but both could be better. Like the very easy access to the internals of these machine. No screws under rubber strips like most of the HP's. The speakers on both machines sounded fair. For business users who need mobility these are an excellent choice. Again as always another great review of both machines.

    • Compete? Intel was crushed. Ryzen 5 4500u is like the same if not better than intel i7 G7 (not to mention iGPU where Intel was smashed). And when you will look on Ryzen 5 4600u 6core's 12 threads i7 can hide. And then you still have Ryzen 7 4700u 8c/8t and 4800u 8c/16c this is a monster. I have read some threads made by people that have bought a laptop with Ryzen 7 4800u + 16gb ram and 512ssd. Those things are reaching in Cinebench R20 score like my Ryzen 5 2600 overclocked to 4.1. And when you will unlock Ryzen 7 to 35w you get like 10-20% boost (iGPU + CPU) ofc there is thermal problems but you will put cooling pad under it and you get like 6-10*C lower. Look on the YT where ppl were unlocking Ryzen 5 2500u with 35w it was on the pair with Intel i7 8th generation, and almost same as Ryzen 5 2500H. Intel is over. Look back since Intel 3-4 gen processors till 7 gen was no performance jump not to mention those funny laptop CPU's. I have had a Thinkpad T430 from 2013 with i7 3740QM 4c/8t which was on the pair with t460 with i7 HQ (this one was like 5-7% faster). First generation since 3-4 gen that gave ppl some performance jump was intel 8gen with i5 and i7 from U series with 4c/8t. Gen 4-5-6-7 all i7 U series was 2c/4t which is a joke. I am looking to buy a laptop for me now as my second driver as I have PC as main, and I know it will be with Ryzen 4000. I love thinkpads I have t450s right now (which is funny because i have i5 5300u and this one is like 30-40% slower than my T430, but it is lighter, it's making less noise and battery life is a lot better). I will not mention PC's CPU situation where Intel was making like 3-5% power jump and wanted from ppl to pay for it x2 times more.

    • Yes. Any way of fixing that high temperature on the intel-version?

      @Kolzahn@Kolzahn3 жыл бұрын
    • Thats basically because of the intel chips that run like heaters. Intel chips still use old fabrication techniques and they basically run hot as fire. Nothing u can do about the heat itself but using a third party software to ramp up the fans slightly more should help. Amd is a better option anytime for any laptop.

      @pendayungunggul271@pendayungunggul271 Жыл бұрын
    • @@pendayungunggul271 do not even by mistake get 12th gen intel chips. The H and P series chip overheat like crazy, then thermal throttle within 5 minutes. Rendering the chip slower than 11th gen in sustained workloads. This is consistent with any laptop using these chips. The U series chips are already too underpowered and slow. Thinkpads have P series chips mostly. With amd u loose 5% performance in single core scores of benchmarks but they use much less power means less heat and much more battery life. And amd chips will be able to sustain the full performance without overheating or throttling means u can use full power of the chips constantly. Meaning in real world useage amd is much much faster. Ryzen 6000 series also use the rdna2 architecture graphics that are very powerful, the performance can he compared to a mobile rtx 1660 max-q variant. They are the best integrated graphics of any laptop to date. (Ryzen 7 comes with radeon 680m and ryzen 5 with 660m) The amd models also cost 100 dollars or so less. I brought the t14s gen 3 amd. The s model because it’s available with the oled display. I maxed the ram with 32gb. Soldered ram is good if ur ok with 32gb, soldering ram means they can use low power kind means even more battery life and less heat. Soldered ram is also faster (t14s gen 3 has 6400mhz ddr5 ram, upto 102gbps bandwidth, while intel one has much slower type) they are highly unlikely to fail at any point during the life of laptop, especially for a thinkpad which uses very reliable and sturdy components. So unless u go for more than 32gb its pretty meaningless to have a removable ram. If u dont care for the 2.8k 90hz oled display, i recommended going with 400nits low power display. With gen 3 t14s amd and intel u get 1 heat pipe (it is plenty for ryzen 6000) With gen 3 t14 u get more vents on the bottom and with amd u get 2 heat pipes while intel one has just 1 heat pipe so that it can throttle fast and doesn’t overheat. T14s gen 3 amd with 400nits low power display = upto 16 hours of real world battery life, with oled its about 9hrs and if u lower the resolution to fhd and refresh rate to 60hz then expect 3hr or so more. Normal t14 would have slightly less battery due to smaller battery. I have ordered mine although the expected date of delivery is 13 September due to mine being a customized variant.

Specification T14s on AMD has information about compatibility with WWAN Fibocom L850-GL with LTE cat.9 but intel's variant specification has information about compatibility with WWAN Fibocom L850 (LTE cat.9) and also 860-GL (LTE cat.16). Do you know is it a chance to activate Fibocom 860 on T14s AMD ? Bios versions or hardware in mainboard ?

    @TheEnimabandit@TheEnimabandit3 жыл бұрын
    • The hardware is different, jusgt like going from USB 2 to USB 3. There may be some intel systems with Thunderbolt 3 that *may* (and only *may*) have some kind of software kludge. However, the Intel systems with TB3 have almost all of the improvements USB 4 will bring anyway, so for Intel it will be a wash on laptops.

  • If we are gonna list TB3 support as a con when its missing, I think we should list soldered wifi as a con. The AX200 isn't the most reliable wifi chip (Ive got 3 dead ones in my drawer). At least if its swappable you can spend 30$ to fix and not be down too long. If its soldered you gotta send the unit in and might not even get the same model back. Also if the AMD model is running at 18w sustained load, and the Intel is running at 7W, its no wonder the Intel gets better battery.

    @ccallaghan84@ccallaghan843 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah obviously. But I still think the cooling system could be better. Atleast good enough to endure 15W under combined load. 7W in that Intel version is quite disappointing.

      @RishabhSharma-lq1id@RishabhSharma-lq1id3 жыл бұрын
    • @@RishabhSharma-lq1id I don't know if it was a cooling issue so much as Intel wanting to claim better battery at the expense of sustained load. They are less efficient than their competitors, so tweaking like this makes sense. Of course, you can disable boost on the AMD chips and get better battery than the Intel variants, at least that's the case on the 35/45W models. I would assume the same on the 15/28W.
