  • This is about ego and hurt feelings, nothing else. Newcastle did the EXACT same thing to Brighton for Dan Ashworth, not 2 years ago. It's now happening to them. A bigger club wants him, he wants to go. It's the natural order of things. Newcastle are bigger than Brighton, man utd are bigger than Newcastle. Newcastles feelings are understandably hurt. • As a Newcastle fan I don't really get why either Man United fans or fans are getting worked up over this. Dan Ashworth is employed by Newcastle. Man United want him to work for them. Newcastle are under no obligation to just let Dan go and work at a rival prem club, especially if there's a buy out clause in his contract. At the same time Dan is a human and if he feels he's been given an offer to good to refuse then he'll accept it like we all would. This is just business.

    • If it’s just business can you explain Eddie Howe’s press conference or the £20m quoted to release Ashworth from gardening leave? This whole situation showed Newcastle fans getting more worked up than Man Utd fans. I don’t blame them. Nobody likes it when a key member of staff makes it clear that he doesn’t want to be at the club anymore. What is more telling is Newcastle Utd themselves in this. Their strange and sometimes aggressive public behaviour tells me that they may not have contingency planning for Ashworth leaving (or the planning isn’t ready yet). We will see in the coming months with that.

      @pratosaurusrex1128@pratosaurusrex11282 ай бұрын
    • I think the main issue was the pursuit of the director without a formal offer from the club. I think both teams fans are happy with the deal, but not really how it has come about. Dan had to be put on gardening leave before an official offer was made by Man United, so there could still be an impasse regarding compensation. I think it would be extremely naive to not think compensation would be due for a high profile individual who has two years left on their contract and is widely considered to be the best sporting director in world football. You could argue that why is this compensation noted much higher than the £4m paid for him, but you need to consider the 2 years left on contract and the work he has already done with Newcastle. The value of internal staff is increasing every year, so Man United would need to pay for the excess in finding a suitable replacement. So £10m isn't exactly a ridiculous number that will likely be haggled down

    • @@pratosaurusrex1128 why wouldn't we charge a ridiculous fee. We don't want him to go and it's not our job to make your life easier. If you want him, pay for him. As for Howe I think the general feeling inside the club is that Man United approached Ashworth rather than dealing with it club to club.

      @seancampbell7884@seancampbell78842 ай бұрын
    • @@seancampbell7884 you’re actually proving my point. The words you are using show that the fee you want is more to punish Man Utd rather than anything else. Of course a fee should be paid to break the contract between Dan Ashworth and Newcastle, but all I’ve heard from Newcastle fans is that ‘we shouldn’t make Man Utd’s life easy with this’. And I understand that mentality from the fans. The club however? I’d be more worried about the work they have done to see who can replace Ashworth.

  • I'd like to know more about how success is measured for a Sporting Director. If it is a long term appointment what are the markers of having achieved anything. In cases where they employ the manager the effects are perhaps more apparent. However in 1-2 years what have they done, hired some people to delegate responsibilities to? What is the talent pool like globally for such a specialist role?

    @jamesanthony9316@jamesanthony93162 ай бұрын
    • Also, he joined Brighton in spring 2019. This is his 3rd big appointment in less than 5 years. Maybe United is "the" job but for a role that is said to require the long term he does not have a recent record of dependability does he? Seems more like a short term consultant to me.

      @jamesanthony9316@jamesanthony93162 ай бұрын
    • @@jamesanthony9316 you only have to look what he did with the current England FA set up. He is the reason why England are winning major competitions at almost every single level at last. He completely revolutionised how the England youth and scouting system works and will do the same now for Man United. It’s what he was planning on doing for both Newcastle and Brighton respectively, but let’s be honest, Newcastle was a much bigger project than Brighton was, and Man United is probably the biggest project in the world right now, that’s the only reason why he left the two positions, the man clearly has ambition. I don’t see him leaving United any time soon, If he gets United back to the top (where they belong), when added to what he did with England, he’ll likely end up becoming Sir Dan Ashworth.

      @-Old-School-Gamer@-Old-School-Gamer2 ай бұрын
    • @OldSchoolGameCat yes the England job I would agree from the outside appears to be a success for him personally. I am far more skeptical beyond that though. He wasn't at Brighton or Newcastle long enough or at the right times (after Eddie Howe at Newcastle for example) to attribute anything to him. Especially because the role is already clouded in mystery and obfuscation. Like you say maybe United is the height of ambition but it still has the whiff of same old Man Utd going after a marquee signing...the so called "greatest sporting director this country has produced".

And his job is to fixing connecting and integration between first team and academy team and development departement, scout departement, data and analysis departement and recruitment departement. • This was informative but hearing about the behind the scenes goings on at United makes me incredibly angry too. To hear that Alex Ferguson suggested Ashworth to Richard Arnold and we stuck with Fletcher and Murtough..? You have to ask why didn't this recieve more press attention at the time... As a United fan the club has done very little else except spend irresponsibly and let the fans down by doing nothing or sticking to what worked in the 90s. The very notion that Ashworth would be offered a role under Murtough!? That is a joke. It feels like a lot of the United correspondents drip feed information to the public about what is happening at United. We get the scoop 2 or 3 years after the event. What is the benefit to these journalists to covering up for the absolute fools involved in the mess which is United's recruitment department? We have the worst recruitment team and structure and personel in the entire world and the recruitment plans we have enacted in the last 2 or 3 years have been an utter embarassment. They get worse each year! John Murtough is always being defended, always beeing given the benefit of the doubt - its enough to suspect he has some kind of hold on journalists who report on United. I can't wait for him to be sacked. People often defend Murtough based on what he may have been doing before he moved into a DoF role, whereas they used to say he needed time before we judged him in the DoF role... it must be a joke. It is going to be revealed that he has been working for City all this time I bet. I can't see him as a professional, no professional can be that bad, he must be a saboteur. Murtough is the one common denominator involved in every bad football decision made at United since Sir Alex retired, he was the one who started to promote Scot McTominay as the answer to the base of the midfield double-pivot.... its shocking really that he never has to face the music. He is the Ed Woodward of the football staff and he should be gone already.

That’s that ambition of Saudi, NUFC will be more & more competitive as long as owners are there. There are only 2 places between us in the league, we are a competition for each other on the pitch. It’s not emotional for the club or fans, Ashworth is yours and we will either want to take as much cash as possible to help in the summer or make sure he’s nowhere near MUFC helping you. NUFC hold the cards and will either decide there’s a value and MUFC will decide if they want to pay it or he’ll sit out 20 months. The thing to me is that Ashworth will know all about how NUFC intend to use the PIF owned Saudi clubs to raise sale funds or for loans, that may well be worth him sitting at home 20 months. it won’t be an emotional call, purely what is best for NUFC business wise. He makes a lot less than Matt Ritchie for example and we can appoint a successor right away - financially having hit sit it out might be best. Ashworth will not sit at home and just work for MUFC anyways, no senior exec would take that kind of personal risk and it would be a huge risk for MUFC too.

But that isn’t my point. By ‘emotional’ im referring to recent NUFC vs MUFC games whereby Newcastle and their fans have celebrated 3 points like they won the World Cup. Champagne in the dressing room and comments from players saying ‘we love to put one on Utd’ etc. While on the other hand when Utd beat Newcastle it’s just another day at the office. See what I mean? On the Dan Ashworth situation I imagine they will compromise on a middle ground but he would be well worth the £20m Newcastle are asking for. And if he has to sit on gardening leave for any extended period there isn’t really much anyone can do in terms of policing his interactions with Ineos. Him and Brailsford are good friends after all. He’s on gardening leave, not house arrest. This isn’t 1984. He is still allowed to socialise with friends and talk about football the way football fans often do.

Brighton went from relegation contenders to Europa as soon as he left. Newcastle we’re close to signing Maddison, Paqueta and Diaby and Ashworth decided Lewis Hall was a better option. He never recruited brightons hidden gems like Mitoma, Caicedo etc, that was Sam Jewell, all Ashworth did was negotiate a price. All Ashworth wants is over priced British players. If Newcastle get Rangnick, he will be a huge upgrade over Ashworth. Rangnick is the bloke who scouted Haaland, Mane, Nkunku, Gvardiol, Keita, just to name a few.
