Speaking of which, you have to get one of her partners in groove, the Da Vinci of drums, Vinnie Colaiuta. He’s playing with her and the great Jeff Beck. Awesome that you’re interested in music & you play guitar? Thanks for all the awesome interviews Lex. 🍻

    • Thank you for sharing your experience with grief. It's something we all must face in life. I'm working on my journey with loosing my 17 year old son 2 years ago. I agree with you that as hard as it is, you have to sit with it and experience it in order to process it. Loosing my brother and father 2 years prior prepped me in knowing how to navigate such a huge loss. I don't get out much, so it's comforting to hear another souls journey through this test in life. Thank you for sharing your experience. It helped PS It was my dad that introduced me to Jeff Beck. .. my parents loved music and have gifted me with that love. I believe in the magic that surrounds all of us... it's real. Thank you for giving it a voice for others to hear❤ Much love to you 🙏🤍

    • I met her at the NAMM show about ten or eleven years ago and she was SO damn cool. She was at the booth of a boutique bass amp company. She had a long line in front of her waiting for autographs and she continued patiently signing them long after "last call" was announced. I was one of the last dozen people to meet with her - about 45 minutes after the last call announcement was made by by her handlers. ...and she still treated me like I was the first person she'd met that day. (I also got to see her perform with Jeff at one of the epic after-parties that night.) I still have her autographed picture hanging in my music shop here on the Big Island of Hawaii. That year I met Eddie Kramer, Phil X, Vinnie Paul, Jim Root, Billy Gibbons, Robby Krieger, Rudy Sarzo and a bunch of other guitar legends, but I still consider my short meeting with Tal to be one of the highlights of that trip. They say "never meet your heroes" but after 30+ years in the industry, I've only found that to be half true. Some of the most down to earth and humble people I've met have been legends like Tal.

Tal, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Jason Rebello back up some of Jeff's best live work ever captured on film. Joss Stone and Imogen Heap stop by for some guest vocal spots. The who's-who of music royalty are in the audience. The laughs, the smiles, the banter, the solos....its epic.

Questions like "What so funny" (at various times including the way Jeff ended Brush With the Blues at 2007 Crossroads) & "What was going on with that table at Ronnie Scott's during stratus? Was it just that they were groovin' or a pick up suggestion? That guy was cute and Tal's eyebrows did that quick up thing" IDK.

  • Tal auditioned for my band when she was about 17. She came into the room and we thought it was going to be rough because she looked like an out of place kid. And then she absolutely KILLED IT. We were all laughing after the first song finished because she blew away the 20 bass players who auditioned before her. We had a spec deal with a label so it was a 'join the band' type gig that didn't immediately pay. We offered her the gig but she needed to finish music school first and was really looking to make some needed money so she had to decline. We told her best of luck, keep at it and she'll get somewhere for sure. A few years later I saw her playing with Jeff Beck and texted the guy her brought her for the audition. I asked if he remembered if her name was Tal. He said yes. I said dude, she's playing with Jeff Beck. He said, well, we knew she was amazing. She was an amazing player, super nice and gracious. So happy for her.

  • I was at the 2007 Crossroads festival with my then 17 yr old blues loving daughter. The whole day was amazing, but the Jeff Beck set was beyond magical. First time my daughter and I had ever seen Tal, my daughter laughed saying Tal looked about 15. We were in the upper stands near the stage, and could look down into the ball field where everyone, all day long was milling around during the day. During Jeff’s set, I happened to look down at the field, and almost no one was moving. The crowd, including us, were literally entranced by the music, and the conversation between the musicians. Most sets were only 1/2 hour long, but Jeff and Tal played for an hour. It was one of the most amazing, enriching, magical concert experiences i have ever had, and I’ve been going to them since the early 70’s. Tal Wilkinson is an amazing musician, but more than that, she is wise beyond her years, an old soul if you will, with heart and soul shining through her music. Wonderful interview, thank you.

  • I'm such a great fan of Tal Wilkenfeld ever since i discovered her. No doubt she is such an extraordinary talent. I thought this session with Lex would essentially revolve around her music - the technicalities industry life on the road and such like.. But she surprised me with her maturity and depth as a person. She is so well read in the mystical texts. Now i know where the music in her comes from. It's from her soul that she diligently serves through her various spiritual practices. She is a much needed example to young upcoming musicians on how to have a complete and satisfying life, integrating music into their whole life , not letting it be just a part that fills a hole, helps gain social attention and serves to pay the bills .. Bravo Tal !!

I've seen Jeff at least 20 times in my life and his happiness on stage comes from the people he pushes to another level and the people who push him as well. You and Vinnie with Jason made Jeff so happy. I've never seen it to that level with anyone else. I'm glad he was able to feel that joy with what I believe to be the best quartet ever.
