In this video I try my hand at brass casting! I use old bullet shells (thank you to who sent them 10 years ago!)
to cast the door knocker I carve on the bandsaw. Nearly all my learning on this subject was gotten on KZhead!! And little trial and error!
Please enjoy!

As a professional patternmaker I can approve you are officially insane. That thing is awesome! Jimmy, next time you cast something, please close your face shield. I knew an old aluminium foundry boss who had a form blow up in his face. From that day he was nearly deaf and nearly blind. A face shield would have saved him his eyesight. Also, dear watchers, if you try to cast brass: Don't breathe the fumes. They'll give you the headache and fever of your lifetime. It's zinc fever. You really don't want that sh*t.
Sir Jimmy I know you talk a lot on the podcast about how difficult it is to execute these videos but we as viewers never know because you do everything with such ease keep up the amazing work
Primeiro ele tem diploma para isso ,e segundo ,ele e do signo de áries.
What did punctuation do to hurt you?
As much as I enjoy the construction and renovation videos, these little art pieces like the ones from the old days in the New York basement workshop are the ones I really love. The immediacy of the creation from the rough sketch in the wood to the finished piece is just bliss. Thanks Jimmy.
Thank you!
Your ability to sit down, free hand draw an object on a square piece of wood then proceed to carve it using a bandsaw will never cease to amaze me. It is almost therapeutic to watch you work brother. Thank you!
Nothing like watching a true craftsman. Use the tools you have to the fullest. I haven’t cast anything since Middle School. We poured an Aluminum likeness of Lincoln from a premade form and mounted it on a handmade wooden backing. I’ve been wanting to do something with my scrap brass. So now I need to make a smelter and forms and get molding sand and I can hear the wife sighing and mumbling something about another project. Oh geez.
He stands like a statue, Becomes part of the machine Feeling all the endgrain, Always cutting clean He saws by intuition, The woodchips richly fall That woodworking tough guy, Sure plays a mean bandsaw He's a bandsaw wizard There has got to be a twist A bandsaw wizard's Got such a supple wrist Jimmy, your skill set is endless, awesome video man!
Gotta love the supple wrist 😂 this needs a pin! ❤
❤❤❤😂😂😂😂
Well done & I just know that "The Who" would appreciate it! 👍👍💀💀☠☠
@@sapelesteve I was reading it with a Slayer sound to it 🤣
Took me a second to get the Pinball Wizard reference 👍
You are so fun to watch, it’s as if you think of something you want to make or do and then the world is all open space before you.
Jimmy’s carving abilities with a bandsaw are just stunning.
This is one of your coolest videos yet, Jimmy! It's almost like something happened in the last year or so and your videos have been through the roof creatively. Really feels like you're building the stuff you really wanna build.
Wow, thanks!
Nice! It could use a striker plate under the knocker.
The cutoff sprue that had the leakage would be perfect IMO.
Nice JD. Really nice.
Or just a flat head screw counter sunk into the door under the striker
I love thé sound of knocking on wood as opposed to metal on metal
I can definitely tell this is one of those "I have made fire" moments for you. That's so awesome looking, Jimmy!
Amazing! With finding those mysterious footprints at the graveyard house, I'd be worried about hearing a knock at the door only to find no one there when you answer. Be careful Jimmy!
Absolutely love that this thing was made from spent bullet casings... it just adds worth in my eyes...
What a result 💀 Your skill never ceases to amaze me. Great work restoring the grave stone in your house restoration video too.
The fact your in NY state and have buckets full of spent brass warms my heart
Ramming up molds on the tablesaw. Its like the kitchen counter---always the best place to work.
Jimmy’s mastery of the bandsaw is impressive. His precision is astounding as everytime he uses it I can’t help but think what would happen if he was a few millimeters off. Oh and he does it at a blistering rate. I’d swear he sped up the video. 😅😅😅
The Bob Ross of the bandsaw. Thanks for taking us along.
Didn't know that Chip and Dale are so good with casting. It was Perfect!
That knocker is so Gothic looking, perfect for your front door thanks for all you do🤗😎🤗😎
Great project with NY-Basement-vibes, reminded me of the belt buckle video. Respect for such a beautiful piece, especially after what you said on the podcast yesterday. As a european i like the uploadtime very much, perfect for breakfast.
Feels like I just walked into early 18th century Bahamas. Very nicely done.
Please excuse language. But that is bad ass. I’m a Tampa bay buccaneers fan and I want one. Can’t afford one but I want one. Your an absolute artist at any thing you do Jimmy. Love it
Best part of the whole thing was realizing you did it for the kids 👍🏻
This reminded me of the belt buckle video. Some of the same techniques, some new challenges to figure out. Awesome!
Growing up at a foundry i loved to see this! I have seen this so many times, bring back memories of my dad. Thanks!
The only ASMR channel that does it for me.
That is the best knocker I've ever seen....fantastic 😊
Awesome as always! It brings me great joy that the flathead screws all line up :D Looking forward to the bell!
Wicked cool! The video certainly explains the many questions left by the IG posts! That is fantastic, Jimmy!
I don't know what it was, but this one had me remembering the old basement video days. As always awesome random creativity. Jimmy, you never fail to inspire or entertain! Love it!
Cool that you put it at kiddo-height on the door. Happy Halloween.
Just awesome and badass. Jimmy you have been an inspiration for years. Keep making great stuff
Big knockers always put a smile on my face
From an old Foundry owner...one word amazing!!...only thing i would suggest is exercise the upmost care and safety in your future casting. Shit happens very fast and without warning
You sir are truly a jack of all trades and a master of ALL!
Jimmy, thank you for another perfect Saturday morning. I've said it before, but there are few things better than watching one of your original creations over a hot cup of coffee. And the content of this one on Halloween weekend, 😙🤌.
Jimmy' s a genius and my sensei. But making brass doorknockers in petrobond id my game, and I have notes: You could get away without using a split pattern for the ring - you can tap a whole pattern half-way into the sand, make a good parting line with your fingers, dust with parting powder, then ram the top half of the sand. The pattern can be picked or tipped out. You see Indian foundrymen do it all the time on YT. Also I did not see Jimmy flux the melt, tho he might have off-camera. Brass has a lot of zinc boil off during melting and it's nice to keep it in the alloy with a flux of borax.
I always enjoy the production of your workings, sometimes with dialogue and other times without, as pictures can save a thousand words regardless it's easy to see and understand the details of what you do. you're a very talented and experienced maker and you're an inspiration to me. Many Thanks to you Jimmy Diresta!
Your skill at carving wood on the band saw and still having all your fingers is amazing
Two words, "through bolt". Don't make it so easy for me to come over with a screwdriver and get a souvenir, Jimmy. Nice knocker, sir. Thanks for the video and never stop making them as long as you can.
This is so awesome in two levels, first it looks great, second it's like a lesson in use whatever tool you know how to use and have , like use the band saw to make the sculpture that then will be molded
The ease in which you make something is insane. Thanks for being you and sharing!
Everything you do is so amazing to me. Thank you for making and sharing these videos❤❤❤
I started watching you 9 years ago. I am your fan 🫶
this is absolutely awesome. So cool to see this process start to finish. You duh man Jimmy!
Great project and video as always. Thumbs up and thanks for posting.
Harmonic with the season, as though one knocks to enter the paradise of the departed. Beautiful clear, smooth & educational build showing so many techniques in useful detail, down to aligning all the screw slots to the horizontal. Thank you for sharing!
Cool video Jimmy reminds me of the old days
fantastic job. The kids at Halloween are going to get a real kick out of it
the scariest thing about this video is the lack of a strike plate. How terrifying for the door! ;-)
Loved the excitement in your voice when you pried open the mould to see it looking so perfect 😍
It's not just the oft-demonstrated skills that make these videos compulsive watching but the imagination to come up with so many new ideas. I also love the variety of materials used too... and I can't help wondering if there's some meaning behind using spent shells for a greater purpose 😅
Just finished the grave headstone video, now another video. Great timing as always. Swear its universe timing with your videos a lot of times. You are a great caretaker of the property with all the work on the headstones etc.. Big time props 👍
Now I’m going to need to make a door knocker….even though I’ve got gates and don’t want anybody knocking on the door. 😂😂. The hidden bits in the screw driver came in handy.
That skull!!!! Freaking awesome!!!
Mr Diresta you are such a talent! Love watching your videos! Been a fan for many, many years! Thank you!!
JD is the undisputed champion of the band saw.
Fun project with so many interesting problem solving opportunities! I always learn so much just watching how you combine tools and techniques.
What a cool project! I bet the trick or treaters are going to love it!
Stunning work, Jimmy! It looks mad beautiful! Really well done!!! 😃 Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
That's some "classic" Diresta shit right there! Nice job!
That was fantastic! Beautiful piece Jimmy!
I love the scene at 9:50 with the forge and the sand molds in the foreground, and the antique wooden wheel casting pastern in the background. This is really an amazing video!
Thank you very much!
This really a great piece Jimmy. Well done!
Nice knocker! Still impressed that you did most of the carbying on the bandsaw. Not surprised, but still impressed. Not to mention all the other skillls demonstrated. Turned out really cool! Thanks for sharing!
Just in time for Halloween, THE KIDS WILL LOVE IT !
This is so awesome. Maybe put in on the Graveyard House. Wait.... Don't. The house already is haunted. Thanks for taking the time to Share!
Cool project! Watching the process, the one thing that came to mind is how many times I've used my table saw as a workbench and ... regretted it.
Very cool. I see a strike plate in your future.
So very cool Jimmy you Sir are a true artist and craftsmen great job
Your creativity and craftiness is so inspiring.. thanks for the videos man 🙏🏻
Great work! Thanks for the look.
Said it before and I’ll say it again, your making abilities never cease to amaze, but I’m sure you’ve got your knockers 😄
That looks amazing.
So much talent! Thank you!
Hey Jimmy, thank you for putting out your beautiful work out here. I just want to say thank you, we apreciate you ♥️
I still love these kinds of products more than anything else. I bet they are very difficult to male but this is the reason I started following along
Bandsaw carving. Damn impressive.
This is so eerily beautiful.
This hits just right. Anytime you make something in the shape of a skull I'm watching it 7 times at least. Happy Halloween Jimmy
This is sweet. The stuff you can pull off with minimal tools sometimes used in unconventional ways is super inspirational. The way you work that bandsaw is a treat to watch. Thanks for sharing Jimmy and happy Halloween ☠️
Very well done! You make it look easy!
Hope your well buddy! I'm just working in my shop and saw you put a new vid out. Still boot strappin with two cheap tormachs and making money to retire from the day job. It's amazing what you can do without spending too much. Im so busy I haven't had a weekend off in a couple years! Stay well friend.
Hello Jimmy good job beautifully done
Why did it never occur to me that you could TIG weld brass - the loveliest of all metals!? A revelation!
Absolutely fantastic you have so many skills and make it look so easy. Love the videos 👍👍
This is so sick, awesome work!!
Great work as ever Mr Diresta. 👍👍
Very cool build! 👌
Just a friendly FYI, It looks like your firearm brass still has the primers in. Be aware the primers contain a small amount of lead (unless specifically lead free). Lead styphnate is the explosive that fires the primer, and unless your firearm brass was cleaned beforehand you are at risk for lead contamination, particularly when smelting. It looks like you did the melting/smelting outdoors, which is good. Your final product likely contains a small amount of lead in the alloy.
Looks great Jimmy!
Awesome job, your casting reaction is priceless. Should have put it on the graveyard house... ;-)
As usual, amazing & totally scary work by Jimmy! Happy Halloween! 👍👍🎃🎃☠☠
This thing is so awesome
Bad, badass!! Great job!
Thank you for the new video!!!
Really liked this one!
Happy Halloween man! Quality keep it up
Wow! I follow you from the beginning of your channel and every day I am more surprised by the quality of your work. Keep going! Regards from Argentina
