The “world’s largest data center campus” doesn’t belong at Manassas Battlefield Park, or on any hallowed ground. The Trust is going to court to stop it! Please make a donation to support the Trust in this fight today. bit.ly/3wSOKyL
Learn More about our efforts to stop the Prince William Digital Gateway at Manassas: www.battlefields.org/news/ame...
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

  • In 1998, Prince William County rezoned this entire area as part of a protected Rural Crescent. This was in exchange for allowing increased density zoning and residential subdivisions further to the east. The compromise to allow increased development has already been made. This makes a mockery of the 1998 rezoning concessions.

  • What's so horrible about data centers is that they are not real growth in a community. During construction, they do employ hundreds, even potentially thousands of people, but 75% of those will not be local. And after the 3-5 years of construction, they will employ maybe 10% at best of the number of personnel it took to build them, not building a product that is beneficial to the community, not employing community members, but receiving tax breaks that you and your family could never receive. This madness has to stop.

Both of these utilities are typically government sponsored or subsidized entities, which makes opposing these monstrosities, extremely difficult. They also cover acres of land with concrete and other non-porous materials leading to high levels of rain runoff. Many data centers are under-utilized and not built out in full which represents millions of square feet not being used. The corrupt government LOVES legal disputes. They get to fund their effort with the endless tax dollars extorted from you. Hope you are successful at stopping this travesty.

    @dc-wp8oc@dc-wp8ocАй бұрын
    • The water stats are a bit misleading considering the water gets reused and then poured out again in the same state it entered. So it's not really consuming water in the same way as, let's say, coca cola plant.

      @_loss_@_loss_Ай бұрын
    • @@_loss_ Incorrect. Water is used and treated with anti-corrosive chemicals which are part of any chiller and cooling tower operation. Backflushing systems directly to the public sewer mimics other industries which are allowed by the corrupt government to add additional pollution to the public waterways. Cooling towers can have hundreds if not thousands of gallons of water loss over the course of a year and this water has to be continuously topped off or made up. Some facilities may have an emergency water storage on site, but this also is chemically treated so it is not potable but earmarked for system use. There are also the millions of gallons of rainwater runoff which they will try to mediate with retention ponds which normally turn into misquote havens if not also treated. Typically, data centers are one- or two-story windowless facilities that consume great amounts of water and electrical resources while simultaneously creating hundreds of thousands of gallons of runoff. A lot of land and water degradation for such a small "creating jobs" benefit. Why don't these developers investigate old industrial sites that lay dormant? Why not revitalize old sites instead of butchering pristine land? And finally, it is not smart to have so many critical sites in one geographic location.

  • I will absolutely sign. To think they’d fathom with the audacity to even think about developing what’s left of Manassas. At best from UnAmerican businessmen who don’t appreciate or care about our nations history or of the men and women who lived it. Manassas battlefield is a piece that of our American national identity, our history, and a moment in time of a culture to be remembered and cherished. It’s a complete disregard to what is good and holy. I am 26 years old and have never even been there. I’ve only been to Gettysburg. Personally I’d like to move down and live in Virginia so I am able to see what’s left before more of it’s gone. By Providence I pray this does not happen. Tired of the development. Imagine the land 100 years ago…. We can’t have another Fredericksburg incident. All about money and greed for a handful of people. I personally have 6 Great Grandfathers that served in the Union and 2 in the Confederacy. It’s a dishonor on both of their legacies to be disrespected and disregarded in this way, let alone of all the other political agendas aimed at deconstructing everything about Americas history that makes us unique and special. Battlefield represents far more than the ground itself, but the men who fought there, and why fellow Americans who loved the Constitution shouldered arms against one another.

    • I wouldn’t be surprised if a Chinese company is trying to buy the land… they really don’t care because it’s not their country and it’s not their history. Which is why , most countries don’t let other international companies buy land… once you start that you end up with these problems. I’m hoping that our government is not encouraging these companies to build on historical sites to get rid of them …. But I wouldn’t put it past them. Our area is building up too and they bent the rules and rezoned a whole farm field for dense residential in the county… The rules in our county is that you have to have at least a quarter acre per lot and apparently we’re only allowed a few of those and the rest have to have half acre lots … that’s what seem to happen in our neighborhood in the 80s. Most of the neighborhoods out here have at least that or half acre lots … this new development that was rezoned- everyone fought it and we lost- is going to allow less than an eighth of acre per lot. They’re going to be able to shove 300 to 500 houses in this field. To give you perspective our neighborhood probably has the same amount of houses but it spans at least Several farmlands that equal a space at least 3 to 5 times the size of this field… And they’re asking minimum $400,000 per house …. that’s almost what my house is worth in this nicer neighborhood. What I don’t understand is how they’re sneaking all these projects in around areas that are either historical or where a lot of rich people live … not even an eighth of a mile away from this new development. There are $2 million houses and they didn’t have any pull stop to stop this? Where are the people fighting for our history and telling these people moving out of the cities to stay where they ruin stuff so we in the country can enjoy quiet and peace like we wish

  • I presume the data center is not being built with federal money, so Section 106 protections for historical properties do not apply. Other than "we don't want it", can we get more information on the legal theory that undergirds this lawsuit? For documentation for other commenters, the case is in Virginia Circuit Court of Prince William County, Civil Trial # CL24000334-00. It was filed January 12, 2024.

To visit the Washington DC area we stayed at a campground next to the Manassas battlefield. We got to drive around the battlefield and briefly walk around in it. I heard a few years ago where they wanted to build a Walmart there, but it was stopped. Now, you have this. All the best in preserving this absolutely essential national landmark.

  • I still don't get the "digital age" it is kind of ridiculous. When we did all of our record keeping on paper and in files, companies had rooms and basements full of records and such, this is all well known. Then the digital age comes along, which is supposed to be more efficient, compresses things, makes it easier to keep track of things, on and on. Okay, I get that, makes sense What makes no sense whatsoever, is how now in the digital world, there are these "digital data centers" like this one, they are everywhere, for data storage. What the hell is being stored, and why on earth does it take this massive amount of space to store and process it all. Pre-digital, when everything was on bulky paper, we didn't have massive warehouses everywhere storing old files. And I disagree with what one of the men in this video even says - "I agree we need data centers". Rally? why do we really need these huge data centers like this? Makes no sense whatsoever

It's called their 'Fiduciary Duty'. So yes, it does involve the government in the sense that it is the law. You can look up this economic/legal concept online. Also, look up 'externality'. The social cost associated with the degradation of this cultural and historical resource is an externality of the data center.

Having said that, if the company that will own the data center owns the land and has received the proper clearances, I don't see any reason to prevent the project from moving forward.
