Building my first hydraulic ram pump using plumbing fittings, brass valves, polyethylene pipes, fire extinguisher as a pressure chamber etc. It has 50 m of drive pipe, 1 m drop. It pumps water up to somewhere around 4 meters through 3/4" garden hose that is 80 meters in total length. The homemade hydraulic ram pump pumps 1,5 liters per 40 seconds which equals to 3240 liters per 24 hours. I had to build a small dam to provide additional drop for the water in the creek that reaches the pump via polyethylene water pressure pipe. I changed the swing dump valve to a regular sliding valve since swing valve got jammed at times and was not reliable. I am really happy with this project. I've wanted to build it for several years now and seeing the water come out from the garden hose on the top is a dream come true. The pond with a stagnant water has now artificial flow through in the dry season. Thanks for watching! Ram Pump in Estonian - vesioinas.

Hi from New Zealand, we are a Nation of getting it done. I too have a home built Ram pump. Been going 7 yrs now. 1 thing for you to do is swap out the fire extinguisher pressure vessel for a bladder pressure tank off an old electric pressure pump. Job sorted, mine had a bike tube in the old one, that burst. 15psi is adequate. Good luck m8.

Excellent, outstanding job. 100% green pumping energy.
This is amazing. Genius idea
This idea from 60-s ööbikuorg , Võrumaa.
Hydraulic ram pump working principle: water rushes trough the drive pipe and the waste valve and slams it shut, the occurring hydro shock forces water up through the second valve underneath the pressure chamber. When the pressures equalize the second valve closes and now the compressed air in the pressure chamber forces the water uphill through a smaller diameter tube.
This is magic !❤️

Hey Donn, great video! Got to share this with a few people who are interested in using underground springs on their property. Sure enjoyed this one for sure. Thanks for sharing with us !
If you have a stream with dirty water that's near a clean water spring, look into a dual acting Ram pump. Uses the water from the Stream to pump the water from the spring. Even though they both go into the same chamber somehow they don't mix!

Donn...nice video...when you were making the pressure chamber I thought...the less seams or holes the better...less problems for leaks...and the in take screen was my second thought...you explained you;d do later...you probably already seen engineer 775 vids...great info there...thanks keep up the good work...

Its incredible how similar our geography looks and those mosquitos, I thought for certain that was filmed here in Canada, lol. This pump is fantastic! I created a huge purgola over my pool and was looking for some way to get water up to create a waterfall effect. This pump is quite literally "it"....thanks!!
Smart pump, i like it Mechanic pump
This was very cool. Thanks for sharing.
Good video as always. We use a ram pump to pump our spring water into a tank for more pressure. We've found that a smaller ID pump tends to pump more then a larger ID pump(the smaller pumps have less wastage). Did you put anything in the fire extinguisher(like a pool noodle, or pipe insulation)? We started out putting pool noodles into 4" PVC pipe capped off on one end and necked down to the size of the pump. Pool noodles work pretty well though as time goes on they start to get compressed and water logged and need changed. We've started to use diaphragm tanks they last about 2 or 3 years before they rust through. That's still alot longer then the noodles. We've never tried just air in the tank. If your worried about the pump freezing just submerse it in water and let it keep pumping. The feed line and the output shouldn't freeze if the water keeps moving. Great video as always, thought I would share some knowledge my dad and I have learned over the years.
Good tips. Cheers!
I like the Category description 😃. Very good educational video!
I don't understand why some would give this video a thumbs down its a great video. I guess some people are just envious that they are not as talented. Again great video thanks for sharing.
Ans. TROLLS!
Maybe they don't like the silent presentation, or teflon tape isn't their preferred method of thread sealing, or they don't like Vans, or they knew that crappy tank would leak, or that the check valves would last longer oriented horizontally or they wanted an explanation of how/why this works

Hydraulic RAM pump projects are basically magic.
That is the cleanest vice I've ever seen.
Nice little pump. Free water for ever now. Just used a fire extinguisher myself to repair my elderly forktruck exhaust.
YEAH.....Donn's back building stuff!!!!! Love the imperial stuff in the metric world which who's measurements are governed by Metric system! Ironic but....all's good!
@fassenkugel Yes sir....I am aware....but there was imperial size parts in his pump.
@fassenkugel yes I know this also. Spent time in Cameri Italy west of Milan.
:D yeah, we (in czech republic) love the combination of standart metric with imperial plumbing :D it could get really interesting/annoying in fact :D for example - pressure gauges can have 1/8", 1/4" 1/2", M12x1,5 or M20x1,5 - and small things like this can make/destroy your day. :)
funny thing, even though the part itself has an imperial measurement on it, in some cases the catalogue in the shop has the measurement in metric. So for example if it's an 1 and 1/4inch it will say 32mm in the catalogue. It's stupid
@@shlepkovac3759 I "love" it, when i buy flanges with threads - you have DN 32 for 5/4" threaded pipe DN 40 has 6/4" and so on.
Amazing. Imagine having to beg someone in real life to let you watch while he works...

pond look near to dead. you should plant beautiful plants to make shadow for the pond and give sustaining life, so the waterqualiti grow. Nice pump, you are a good mechanist!
Sorry for my english (im from 🇺🇦) But 1,5 litters for this huge lake is so little. Every hour from this lake water going to the ground more than water which get in to the lake from your pump. It was dood idea not to stop stream at those small river, its good to nature. But I recommend you ti instal more powerful pump (may be electric pump). You should pay for electricity, so install not powerful pump. It will be more correctly, and more water will come. And lake will be cleaned more faster. Nice work, best wishes :)
Very nicely done!!!

GOOD JOB..AMAZING..
I'd get rid of the last green pipe and straight to the pond, that will have much less friction and give you more pressure and volume. Further more, if its just 1 m drop, you can put an elevated 220l barrel on a ramp 10m from the pump, and connect it to the stream at higher level. This will give you higher drop of 1.5-2 m, and shorter distance to the pump... again, less friction inside the tube.
Um carneiro hidráulico muito bom parabéns
I have a ram pump since 2012. It is working well for me with waterfall 60cm height and 6 meters pushing water up. You must know that a ramp pump is only 10% efficient BUT it's free.

Beautiful video
i love your vedio tutorial it is cleare explanation so far than the others. i need this for water suply here in remote mountain area in the phillippines thanks
I use a ram pump at my cabin. I found that the larger the tank the more pressure I get. I use an old well tank with an inflatable bladder. I also get better results using a foot valve at the waste gate. I can add weight to keep it open longer. These will move a lot of water. Great idea for your pond.
My question what is the actual valve that causes it to operate
@@bruceaskin9645 The waste valve slams shut causing a water hammer effect. This pushes water up the smaller pipe. It resets the gate when pressure drops opening the waste gate again. Cycle then repeats. Both valves are necessary.
I really enjoyed your this video clip. Thanks a lot
Thank you for watching!
I hope your hands always have health and power.from IRAN.
Do you have to have the pressure tank or does it increase pressure through the discharge hose?
Pressure tank is absolutely necessary.👍
good idea ...👍
Artificial..means didn't use electricity or motor with gasoline.. this is wow I love it..i want it to my farm my near in the river
Look up "hydraulic ram pump" on the internet to find specs and diagrams to build your own. This is truly awesome thing to build!
fascinating, congratulations!!!
Glad you replace the waste valve. It either needed some tweaking or was closing to late. Heart beat should be a bit quicker and more regular. Too much wasted water and time. Nice job reappointing that extinguisher. I have heard of people using propane tanks as well. Many just used capped schedule 4" schedule 40 Pipe. Databyter

muito bom parabéns
The best design is to have the "clack" valve in front of the air chamber, this way when the air chamber "pulls" in the water it also has a tendency to pull down on the clack valve. Otherwise the clack valve might get stuck closed having it after the air chamber.
Smart idea!
