  • As an autistic person, this movie holds a special place in my heart for accurately portraying the lifestyle of someone like me without actually making fun of us.

    @enby_kensei@enby_kensei5 жыл бұрын
    • I'm glad to read that; i.e. It's not just my opinion they got it right. I only know people with autism from friends' families but I think I get it. Lot's of people had a hard time with this movie because they didn't get how isolated and uncomfortable emotionally the character is with new people. e.g. someone I would hug as a casual friend on meeting for coffee told me ahead, don't do that this time because my daughter is coming. She'll be unsettled for days, seeing you hug me, because she doesn't know you. Albeit if you're someone new around the accountant, the actuarial tables indicate there's a 50/50 chance he's going to kill you; no hard feelings.

    • I've never been diagnosed, but I recognize a lot of traits in common (difficulty with non-verbal or ambiguous communications, frustration at being interrupted mid-task, some other things portrayed here). The scene on the couch, when she leans in for a kiss and he is completely clueless - that resonated hard. I want a sequel if only so he gets to see her model the Vera Wang dress (which she's kept in mothballs, it's an "investment" after all) and he says "Wow!" and her eyes light up, and they kiss. That needs to happen.

    • Agreed! Great movie. I'm usually unimpressed when I can predict the twists. Through the progression of memories with his father and brother, I knew it was setting something up with the brother because he's never "seen". Really, he is never revealed. When Sean was hired by the Robotics guy, I knew they were brothers. Specifically when they had the brief altercation, after he killed the other Robotics executive. Anyway, that didn't ruin it for me. The way it played out, how they catch up with other. It just gives even more detail into just how good The Accountant is, that his own brother can't even find him.

When people say he isn’t a good actor, I make then watch “The Accountant”, “Argo”, “Batman v Superman” (I know it wasn’t a good film but his Batman is one of the best CBM castings of all time), and “The Way Back”. He’s good when he finds and fits a role. Hope to see him more as Christian since the sequel was confirmed.

I can understand why people say he isn't a good actor because of his style of acting, which is true to a degree but this film really fit him. Every actor has their "niche" of style. • Once upon a time, at work, I was digging through a supply cabinet looking for I don't remember what - when I came across a supply of Pocket Protectors - with little cardboard labels that could be slipped into a little slot for you to put your name on. Each one came with ... like a dozen of these little strips of really thin cardboard. So ... amused ... I dug around in my desk and found a bunch of pens, mechanical pencils and markers in different colors and put them in the pocket protector. I then wrote one of the other guys names on one of the pieces of cardboard - and inserted it in the pocket protector's label pouch - then put it on the guys desk when he wasn't there. The first guy thought it was as funny as I did (yes we were ... well I was anyway ... a nerd) - so we then wrote one of the other guys names on one of the little pieces of cardboard and put it on his desk when he wasn't there - and he thought it was funny too. This went on through most of the guys in the office ... who actually, unlike me ... weren't really nerds ... until we got to this one guy ... who ... could be considered ... kind of nerdy ... and ... he ... didn't think it was funny. He was actually kind of pissed off about it. *shrug* So - I then took the four things I usually carried in my pocket, put them in the pocket protector - and I used that thing for years until the flap broke off. I think the real purpose of those things - is to save time putting all these pens and pencils in your pocket every morning as you only have to slip one thing in there. The four things I carried were: A Black Ink, Pentel Rolling Writer Pen - I liked wide letters A Black Felt Tip Paper Mate Pen - for writing on floppy disks (ball point pens could damage the media through the jacket). A .7 mm Pentel Mechanical Pencil - for doing math (so I could erase when I made mistakes). And a Six Inch Piokett Ruler - that had millimeters down one side, inches in tenths down the other and a metric to standard conversion table on the back - but which I mostly used as a straight edge. I also sometimes carried a combination pen that had red, green and blue refils on little sliders inside it so you could press down on the slider for the color you wanted and use that. This was mostly for the red ink but I used the green sometimes too but rarely the blue ... because ... blue doesn't photo copy well. If you need to copy something in blue ink (like a mimeograph) you want to put a clear yellow filter on it. These are most easily found in stationary stores for use as Report Binders. Ah yes ... my misspent youth ... .

      @bseidem5112@bseidem51122 жыл бұрын
    • @@bseidem5112 Yeah. Knew some guys doing some of those things. I retired about the same time but it was a disability retirement ... not happy ... but better off than my friends who got cancer and died. Getting old sucks. Oh ... one of the things I left out - which wouldn't fit in the pocket protector - was a little 3x5 spiral bound note pad I jotted down ... notes ... in. Names, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, part numbers - anything and everything I needed to remember for future reference. My boss had one too and called it his "Paper Brain" so I picked up the term. I'd fill one of those up and get another. I'd carry the old one around in my brief case but after a while all the info in it was OBE so I'd stop referencing it. My brief case was more of a tool and parts kit for working on and connecting computers. Cable cutter/wire stripper, RJ-45 crimper, RJ-45 and RJ-11 connectors, cable tester, then a collection of gender benders and couplers. It pissed me off to be unable to connect something because the cable we had had the wrong ends on it so I kept a supply of the DB-9 and DB-25 gender benders - but these were consumables. If I needed one - it was a permanent use of the thing so I'd go to Fry's (can't believe it's gone ...) and stock up. Same thing with couplers and cross overs. I had a small saw handle with two blades, one for wood and one for metal. Used that a lot. Various Leastherman type multi tools. I liked the ones with the needle nosed pliers but I actually used the ones with the scissors more. Trouble is - I'd always end up cutting cable with them and that ruined them as scissors .... I had several types of screw drivers, normal Philips and flat blade but then some precision ones and a Panasonic Rechargeable Power Screw driver (with a blade set!!!) I really got a lot of use out of opening computer cases. Zeeet! Zeeet! Zeeet! Zeeet! Zeeet! And yet - I had a P-38 Steel can opener on my key ring that I got in the Marines which I used any number of times as a flat blade screw driver and a souvenir pocket knife with a small blade I used on Phillips heads. I _always_ had those on me so ... they were my fall back tools. I went on travel one time to train people in using a software scenario generator ... and didn't bring my tools ... so here I am laying on my back in the computer lab with my pocket knife unscrewing the cards from the bottom of a rack mounted 4 computer box ... I was so pissed ... Eventually found some guy in the lab with a Phillips head I could borrow ... They'd tested those boxes before they were shipped but then they got a replacement computer on a card or one of it's components that was an improved model and so here we were at the remote site replacing them all ... Ah ... and the nerd deluge just keeps on coming ... At least I didn't get sick that time ... .

  • When looking at the Accountant, Spock would raise his eyebrow in admiration and say that he is the closest a human can come to a Vulcan. The Accountant shows little to no emotion, he is a math and numbers genius, and his concealment operations are logical and precise. Besides that, he is tough as nails like Vulcan males, so the only thing he would need is get a pair of cheap pointed rubber ears and he'd fit right in with the Vulcans! As long as he bleeds green, he is good to go!!!

    • He'd be curious about the condition too. *Vulcan:* I understand you have a condition. A form of High Functioning Autism that prevents you from socializing from others society deems as the humans say "Normal." *Accounting:* That is true, but I do wish to socialize sometimes. *Vulcan:* Fascinating. You have a Vulcan mind, yet a Romulan's emotional desire.

    • I'm guessing this was sarcastic - but he's as human as any other autistic person. He's got feelings, he just doesn't show them the way neurotypicals do. If he didn't care (deeply) about people he wouldn't do what he does in the film. Logically, he should have not bothered to help the old couple or Dana. Also, for (some) autistic people lots of emotion results in less of it displayed. You can see he's engaged in various scenes. Like when he comes to save Dana, he looks directly at her, something he generally doesn't ever do - now it could be to check that she is okay but it's also probably because he cares about her. He's not able to show more than what neurotypicals consider robotic or Spock-like displays of expression -- it's not really about control, as it may be for Vulcans. It's more that that lack of obvious emotional expression (usually it's spottable if you look carefully - there are tells) is natural for humans who are autistic.

  • He has an amazing portrayal, honestly. His behavior kinda resembles how I was with strangers when I was younger and how I act now when Im feeling nervous or anxious. His struggle to make eye contact and not talking much in conversations unless it’s something he likes or applies to him, is a detail I appreciate. A lot of his behavior and habits resemble how I sometimes was as a child. Though he is an adult and has these habits I fully understand that for some it is difficult to grow out of a lot of these habits. I actually have multiple habits from when I was a kid that I still haven’t grown out of. It’s difficult for many, even fully functioning, autistic individuals to grow out of their tendencies or habits. For me it’s gotten a little bit better but it’s not gone or grown out of in any way, even as a fully functioning autistic individual I still continue to have some struggles. In general autism is a tricky thing to portray in media, aswell as tricky to determine the accuracy of said portrayal. Autism is a wide spectrum and even with some semi exaggerated, it’s hard to say no one has that experience. Yes there are indeed multiple inaccurate and poor portrayals, but again due to it being a spectrum it is a tricky thing to get right. But I can personally say with certainty that this is one of the most accurate portrayals of fully functioning autism I’ve ever seen and an accurate portrayal of autism in general.

  • Don't know how much love was shown to this one at the box office, or by critics. But, I suspect it was underrated. Great action movie in my opinion. Especially the way they portrayed the 'spectrum', and the power of the Barrett M82A1. I watch it at least once a year.
