A single event made Rudolf Nureyev the most famous dancer in the world. On June 16th 1961, Nureyev defected in Paris at the height of the Cold War. Rudolf Nureyev: Dance to Freedom recreates those dramatic events.
It’s a story of Love and Betrayal, Ballet and Espionage; told by those who took part in it, and whose lives were changed forever. Before the world’s cameras were trained on Nureyev, Dance to Freedom uses powerful dramatization and original performance. It stars Russian Ballet star Artem Ovcharenko, principal dancer with the Bolshoi, as Rudolf Nureyev; and was filmed in St Petersburg and Paris.

  • *Nureyev never spoke on politics, so telling that he "betrayed" his country is not right. Nureyev even said that he's an artist and don't care about in which country he performs, as long as he can dance there he will stay. He was hunted by government, but through out his life he carried wonderful Russian ballet, which he has taken to other countries and generations.*

    • "Hunted by government"? He was "hunted" by his own psychological problems more likely. He betrayed not the country but his old mom. He just left her behind.

    • @@tallknoll3545 At the time Nureyev had to escape from KGB agents in Paris, his mother was only 53 y.o., she was not a helpless “old lady”, and besides Rudolf, she had 2 daughters. Is it possible to moderate the false and hypocritical pathos?

  • Not such a good film. Although interesting insights are given about the KGB and their machinations, the character uf Rudolf is shown as near psychotic and unintelligent. A great disappointment.

    • Alas, the KGB part isn't that valuable either. Because "the interesting insights" need to be taken with a bucket of salt, when they are coming from the BBC :)
