    • the thing is, even an """election""" can be very useful. Not only are elections a common day for protests and flare-ups, but imagine what people's reactions would be if they just cancelled them entirely. Also: the establishment gets the real numbers. This can be useful for many reasons, not least of which because the vote is a way in which many people opposed to the regime will show their opinions, so you can, for example, use the regional results as a way to guide where you put your security forces. Great video on this by William Spaniel, he's a great source for things relating to the theory of war and strategy

Despite Putin's attempts to separate Russia from the collective "west", as long as there's acknowledgement of the true state of affairs, which is thousands of russians being terrorized against their will, i believe there is a chance for us to form actual democracy where president's elected, not self assigned. So thank you for spreading awareness!

The UK dropped from 4% of GDP to 2%, as did France and Germany. Then it fell even more during the Great Recession, with even Finland, the most proactive nation, not reaching 2%. Now the generally accepted view is that by 2030, Poland will be the strongest military power in Europe, possibly even above Russia, marking the first time a non-founding NATO member is ranked as the strongest military in Europe, and that's potentially even if Russia is included.

    • @calan_k Maybe Russia was seen as a bit of a backwater and borderline failed state in the 90s, but I don't recall Russia being looked at any less favorably during the 2000s than other countries outside the anglosphere, it was just another European country to most people. I mean, it's not like anyone thought Russia was powerless. If anything, this war has made people reappraise the assumption that Russia had the second or third strongest army on Earth, considering how they are failing to conquer a much smaller country. I do think the West should have made more of an effort to bring Russia into the fold, as it does seem like there was a time when they were showing interest in joining NATO and their request was ignored.

  • Simon, my late wife was from a Latvian family, and an old Latvian couple we knew naturally had extreme disdain for Russia. I had many discussions with the old Latvian man. In World War Two he had fought in the Latvian Legion of the German Army. During our discussions in the 1980's and 1990's, he made it clear to me that he considered Vladimir Putin to be the most dangerous man on the planet. He lived to see Putin take control, but died himself in 2006. If he was still alive, I'm sure he would say "See! I told you so!". The hope that people like him had after the fall of the Soviet Union has now also died. I remarried in 2017, and my wife is a Filipina grandmother. We live in Mindanao Philippines. So, I've now got as much disdain for the CCP as my old friend had for Putin and the Soviets. What looked like a rosier future back in the 1990's is now clearly dead.

  • I'm going to make comment out of this in a hopes that Basement Team at least notices the problem: Nowadays there has been same problem in many Simon's channels/podcast that music is ANNOYINGLY LOUD - or music sounds a bit like alarms (phone, general, etc.) on the background - and especially Simon hisssssshing a lot, like all almost the bass has been replaced with his S sounds. It is so bad that I had to stop watching many of his videos or listening the podcasts. I thought it was because of my sensitive ADHD but now I'm kinda glad that others noticed that too. The reason _might be_ that his editors might have TOO GOOD stuff to use when editing sound, while other people don't have money to have the best headphones etc. So maybe editors don't hear the problems. Most of my headsets are for moving while doing something, so the quality of sound, usually bass, suffers.

    • I listened to this video on my phone and felt the audio was at times overwhelming and muddied the narration. I've seen a lot of Simon's videos and on other channels of his, but this video was the worst one so far in that regard.

      @ArmyGreensTanBoots@ArmyGreensTanBootsАй бұрын
    • @@ArmyGreensTanBoots True that there are some differences. He has a little bit different setup also, depending in what channel he records on - so that might also affect sound. I'm often listening both, video format ones and the pure podcast ones. Like I said... It has been nowadays increasing issue, not that everything is like that. So I guess it was bound to happen that some video is worse at it. And I still fully admit that part of it my ADHD and my own setups, so I didn't mention it earlier until it because more of a clear thing to others too. (my own setups never use smart phones, so I know I'm a bit different overall.) I still hope that the sound editing would be tested on some more basic equipment (headset etc.) and maybe that helps the issue.

  • I'm not Russian, but I'm curious to know if Russia's antagonism could partially be explained by perceived crises, collapses and failures every time it sought rapprochement with the West or tried to implement Western models for itself. If Gorbachev's glasnost and perestroika contributed to the collapse of the Soviet Union and if democratizing the country along Western models with Western approval would lead to incompetent leaders like Yeltsin and an abysmal economy with Wild West-like social disorder, then in the eyes of Russians it might seem that Western-style democracies don't pay off. It's questionable whether a country should adopt republican models or secular democracies if it lacks the institutions for these systems. Perhaps Russia's future will be ruled by someone who is neither Gorbachev nor Stalin, but rather by someone in between, like Khrutschov or Brezhnev.

Perhaps all of them consider Western ways of doing things to be on par with social disorder and collapse as well as economic concessions. Only the West can do things the Western way, because the West has institutionalized everything and is the only part of the world that has learned to do so effectively with the passing of the centuries. This is what truly sets the West apart from the rest of the world. Analytical institutions in the West do what societies themselves do in the East. This is why Western societies are dysfunctional and replete with degeneracy while Eastern governments are dysfunctional and replete with corruption.
