This is an awful idea. Beckett should not change. What they should do is get decent turnaround times, price points and customer service.
Great mix of Hobby News. My favorite thing about Beckett, is the sun-grades. It’s wild to me that cards have less information on their graded cards in 2024. Any card over a certain $ amount should have not only sub-grades, but a full report on why and where the blemishes are when you search the serial number on each card. TELL ME WHY MY CARD IS ITS GRADE. Beckett should lean into that.
Yeah I agree... I wish they all had the corner/ surface/ edge/ centering grade on the slabs. BGS slabs are just kinda ugly IMO.
The kids in the backgorund😂
I was just listening to this and looked up at that time frame when one of the kids started twerking😂😂
Lol
If Beckett handed out 10s like PSA, they would get more customers. Its not hard to see why people use PSA. 😂😂😂😂😂
Yar, but you no longer need 4 sharp corners to get a PSA 10. BGS just grade realistically
I dont think it's necessarily good for the hobby long term if the market gets flooded with undeserving 10s like what psa is doing. Short term investment wise...sure. but as soon as the market gets saturated and desensitized by all these 10s getting thrown out undeservingly... its not gonna matter. With psa...in the past 8s for modern cards were equivalent to raw in terms of value. It has moved closer to 9s equivalent to raw. Soon 10s are not going to be special anymore and pop control with psa is gonna be enforced on those cards that really matter...which also is not good for the hobby if deserving cards are denied proper grades. It's a real crapshow really with grading...
PSA will be out of business soon. They're overcharging on grading fees and damaging customers' cards on every submission.
Don't hold your breath. They purchased Genamint the company that creates the best card scanners on the market. It really sucks, but if you are thinking about selling a card the difference between a PSA graded card compared to other companies is thousands of dollars. I like the new company TAG grading, if you haven't checked them out i encourage you to do so. They produce lengthy reports on every card they grade, complete with scans of why it received the grade it did.
if bgs will to give out 10s like psa their value will drop, bgs low sale is due to the slow turnaround and maybe high price but that is why their 9.5 is slightly price higer than or same as psa 10. For me even a 9.5 is worth keeping than a psa 10
SGC also grades 9.5. The grading scale is not the problem. I own several BGS 10 and the BGS 9.5 Lebron gold Refractor.p not to mention plenty other 9.5 gold refractors and gold prizms still prefer keeping the 9.5 as is.
Psa should add subgrades
Yep, that's a no brainer
One other problem would be Beckett regrading the 9.5’s sent for a conversion to a 10. I believe Beckett has a reslab policy where they regrade everything sent in. So, I could see some people being upset/getting hosed if their 9.5 comes back with a lower grade.
Yeah l am spooked on sending any of my cards back to Beckett as l don’t want to get a lower grade back. They should guarantee their grades
Exactly. They don't care, if you had a psa 10 they'll still regrade it which is a good thing imo.
I have a beckett graded 9.5 of 2000 upper deck steph curry rookie and it definitely is a 10 in my book...
I think Geoff is typically spot on, however I think he is wrong about Beckett changing their grading scale. Embrace their history double down on sub grades and 9.5 gem mint. Cut down turn around times and do customer service brilliantly is how they become relevant again. There is no path to success eliminating the 9.5 grade.
Beckett should just take away the numbered grade and just call it Gem Mint
No…. Pristine 10s carry too much weight as a premium item to the psa 10 so unless you *POSSIBLY* make it a lower tier like a new bgs gem mint 10, bgs pristine 10 and then the black label all else will fail. (IMO) collectors own too much $ in premium grades
And this is coming from someone with a veryyyy expensive BGS Pristine 10 card id be hellaaaa upset 😂
Good comment
100% correct. Well said.
CGC already figured out this 9.5 / 10 situation. I have been buying cheap 9.5s and regrading to 10 for $5.
Cgc is dogwater.
CGC doesn’t have 20+ years of slabs in the market, and their slabs aren’t selling for anymore, nor their sports submissions increase.
Lol he should have ran out and gave those kids a high 5, joined the twerk and continued the show lol epic.
If changing the BGS gem mint grade from a 9.5 to a 10 is a supposed solution, you need to explain why an SGC 10 still sells well below a PSA 10
this should change as its under same grading company now.
@@sunny8784 Highly doubt it
The kids twerking 💀
😂
I love when you guys do this on the channel. This shit I like 💪🏼😎
Good video 👍🏼..the Beckett situation is definitely interesting. They were my go to pre 2020. I would love to see a comeback by Beckett.
Honestly, PSA reached almost Monopoly status, for in This Era, seems most hobbyists lost their collector dog fighting skills. Instead of knowing how to grade a card, they live and die by ONE company that just Wrote The Check and Took Over Card Grading. Thing is: from what many see, SGC actually does superior work in most aspects of the grading process.
Is there value in collecting the Topps yearly Team Packs from stadiums? Open / Unopened and Complete League Sets?
Why do you want BGS to look like PSA, I mean, that's the all point for BGS to keep the subgrade. What is killing BGS is the turnaround time! Quantity, quantity, quantity! That's the only way to follow PSA, SGC.
Exactly. It's not going to make them better...in fact it may actually hurt them more
I don’t want the 9.5 changed to 10s. Bought BGS 10 for a special premium in past years and now to erode that rarity?
Same. I think it's their strength. Market is full of weak PSA 10's. I have a number of them with terrible centering and it bothers me.
@@len6482Most have corner wear. I thought you used to need 4 sharp corners to get a PSA 10? Seems like its 2 blunt and 2 sharp these days
@@BrianPinas9 lol
That's why I bid at the last moment. Only bid what you can afford, then you do go past your limit by bidding each other up.
Jeff nailed it. Would you rather see a 9.5 or a 10 on a card? Sure a beckett 10 is crazy good but you hardly see it. Most people want to see a 10 and nothing less.
Great content
We've all won auctions before that we regretted the next day...But most of my regrets are over $500 cards, not $3.7mill cases!
I agree to get rid of bvg labels. Need unified naming since singular company. I think conversion would only be good for cards with two 10s and two 9.5s to pristine. 9.5 total grade comes in a variety of sub grade combos so not all 9.5 should be upgraded to pristine. Grading was a mess 25 years ago and it still is. Good luck to us all.
Doug is 💯 colorblind.
What would nonblack label 10s become then?
Didn’t you just make the point for the need for a 9.5 grade? “The best looking PSA 9 you’ll ever see, if you squint its a PSA 10” -
There is a need for a 9.5 grade. SGC has it labeled as Mint+. They’re talking about changing the Beckett 9.5 GEM MINT to a 10. We must coddle the lazy and dumb people that can’t take half a second to read a label.
It was a strange statement. Almost encouraging lesser attention for sake of money.
I have a beckett 10 pristine and I paid a premium for that and don't want it diminished.! Unless they come up with a special label like a red chrome label or something. Something other than a word ( pristine) to differentiate the 2 grades
Beckett's lack of decisiveness hurt their value as a company. They are supposed to be one of the groups who makes decisions on the quality of our collectibles. If their judgment wavers on this, what else will they waver on?
Make the grading scale like PSA and make subgrades free and standard. That would differentiate themselves from PSA.
Totally missed the boat. You guys said it just after last year's Mint, they needed to capitalize on their marketing snafu. They sent out the surveys, and did absolutely nothing about it.
No way. No way. The 10 pristines and black labels, carry such a simple prestige. You're scaring me now, Jeff.
Grading popularity is driven on final sell value. I'd argue that SGC jumped in popularity when the reports record breaking vintage sales were reported to be in Tuxedos. BGS has maintained a standard and is known as the toughest grading service when it comes to getting 10s. Resellers will go to any service that gives them a higher grade to increase their ROI. IMO, BGS needs to hold their line of quality. Don't change! Don't sacrifice their reputation for sake of making a buck. Getting a BGS 10 means far far more than getting any other grading service 10. AND it's funny that you folks didn't mention anything about the upcharges involved with final grading scores by PSA, which esssentially alienates collectors will little means. Meanwhile, BGS charges a flat fee that allows collectors of lesser means to get their cards graded by a reputable company. BGS all the way!
BGS are the best. Its a shame that Charles Stabile has left
PSA could offer all 9.5 BSG graded cards a guaranteed PSA10 if submittied or something along those lines.
Regarding BGS there are 2 big changes they need to make, and BGS 10's isn't the main one. They need better customer visibility in their receiving and grading process. And they need to be quicker to return cards. PSA is actually turning around cards pretty quick now. Its great that BGS dropped the price, but I dont want to wait 2x as long as PSA just so I can turn around and sell a card for 65% of PSA value.
Id prefer beckett 9.5 over psa 10 everyday
6:54 Look at the kids in the back
I view Beckett as the most respectable and unbiased grading company in this hobby. I hope they don't change a thing with their grading scale. They are basically doing what a third party grading company should be doing. You should be canceled out for suggesting that they change anything about their company just so you can make a bigger profit on these ridiculous priced cards in the market.
Simple mathematics on the Case of OPC is number of packs times the current price for an unopened pack...
Yes more UFC cards!
IMO, the issue with BGS doing away w 9.5’s is that all the millions of BGS 9.5 Gem Mint cards in the secondary market will lose their appeal and value even more so than they have over that past several years. It wouldn’t do all those cards and their owners justice.
I still bid and buy Beckett. Love the sub grades and there slabs are nice and sturdy.
Beckett need to do more!!!
Beckett needs to lower the price on bulk submissions. Even though they dropped the price on higher end services with faster turn times, why would someone submit through them if they are trying to sell a card? BGS has turned into a PC company. Nobody is sending in to them because of their value. Changing a BGS 9.5 to a 10 will not change their value. If you don't understand what a subgrade means and what the value of them are, then you aren't going with BGS in the first place. All that changing a 9.5 to a 10 is going to do it make the fans of BGS and people who own BGS 9.5s and 10s, upset. They are essentially saying that a gem mint grade is no longer a gem mint grade and you have to send it in to the company, for a fee, to get it reslabbed.
6:55 😂
I think PSA need to implement subgrades and change the 10 to a 9.5
20 years from now everybody will remember who was handing out 10's llike they were going out of stile. I wouldn't use PSA for a long term investment card.
In Toronto today, the Beckett line was twice as long as the PSA line. I got a 9.5. What does PSA do with a 9.5 ? LOL, it's not perfect but they give you a 10 or rip you off with a 9. I had a card grade without sub-grades by somebody else, got an 8. Still don't know what was wrong with it, it looked great.
Best part of this video is the boys twerking at 06:54 I literally laughed out loud!
Beckett needs to keep their grading scale. It is what differentiates them from PSA and others. They need to promote it not capitulate to pressure from the new collectors of all of 4 years. They have sub grades which are a great thing and the Pristine 10 and Black label 10. Their slabs are the best in the market too… they have the best product just need to market it that way…
Imagine taking a 20 question test in schools and getting a 90. You know you missed 2 questions. But the teacher/professor ONLY GRADED the test and didn't mark which 2 questions you missed! This is the equivalent of no sub-grades (little to no idea of what was wrong). Now imagine that instead of missing 2 questions, you only missed 1, but got the same grade as someone who missed 2! That the equivalent of the of doing away with the "half" or .5 grading system. Becketts' problems are and always have been turn-around times and customer service. Just my opinion: BGS has always been a stricter, but more consistent grading company. But their unwillingness to put forth the time, money or effort to keep up with demand after the pandemic (or even catch up) gives the impression of a "money grab before the doors close".
I have purchased a lot of BGS 9.5 Cards in the past. Now I buy them to have them Re-slabed by PSA. In my opinion is that a Gem Mint should be a 10. Seems like more and more BGS 9.5 's sells for the price of a Mint Plus at this time. I'm not submitting to BGS untill they change their grading scale to Gem Mint 10. In my opinion .
The kids in the background had me chuckling 😂😂😂
I own the highest bgs graded 86 fleer set at 9.5 overall which took over a decade to put together and would not be happy if beckett changed their grading scale. There are different levels to 9.5 and to have them all be considered 10s will only benefit short term investors.
Hey I used to graded for PSA only vintage cards and they would ask to change PSA 9 to 10 I’m a strict grader my collection I have is all vintage pre war , leaf bowman , topps crackerjack, I work for them 2002. - 2008 My best card is my 1951 bowman mantle PSA 9 , centering is perfect I have complete sets that grade near mint mint 1949 leaf my favorite set
Beckett moving forward should keep it simple! 7’s 8’s 9’s and 10’s! Get rid of that .5, the card is close to perfect or it’s not. Today packs of cards are far more expensive, we open them carefully, we wear gloves, cards go straight into card holders or sleeves. Cards are being graded right out of the packs, they’re brand new and almost not even touched at all! Brand new cards should be getting 10’s! There should be boat loads of brand new cards getting 10’s! The technology is 1000 times better cutting and centering cards today. That’s the big problem with the graders not giving out 10’s when they know damn well the card deserves it. Instead you submit a brand new card right out of the pack wear gloves only touch the edge of the card put it straight into a card holder submit the card and get back a 9 grade, sorry it’s bullsh*t. Really what the card graders are saying is the card company doesn’t have any quality control and that’s bullsh*t. Then get this you get back a graded 9 and the grading company says resubmit the card for a price and magically that flaw that got the card graded 9 automatically disappears and the card becomes a graded 10! Funny you give them more money and your card becomes perfect! Far as the cards that already have .5 just leave them in the population, if someone wants to crack the card out of the case and resubmit that’s fine. And if someone is okay with the .5 that’s up to them.
The kids 😂
Problem is that will cost Beckett so much money to do. They need to stop 9.5s, no doubt. But backtracking those into 10s will bankrupt the company that's already near bankruptcy.
Right all PSA 10s are 10s lol😂
Much like the responses here, the feedback is mixed. Some like that BGS arguably grades harder, others not. Completely changing now, would alter nearly 25 years worth of grading. They need to educate new consumers, why there is value in the transparency of sub grades. Then they gotta offer value to sub with BGS. If asking the same price as PSA, why go with BGS, other than upcharges.
Beckett are the best of a bad bunch
Let's INSTEAD focus on PSA giving out 10's that are 6's and vice-versa! 😮 At least Beckett and SGC give out the grade your card ACTUALLY is! 💯
So what would be the best card grading company for under 20 bucks?
For sports? SGC. For tcg? Probably CSG.
If psa has services under $20, then them
SGC across the board. CGC has no resale value, they've changed they're scales to many times.
PGS in Germany or SCC in Italy
Getting a 9.5 is usually because of margin of error of a grader and can see a factor of pop control. You can take a 9.5 to psa and get a 10 out of it, so logically they are going to lose people. I rather crack a 9.5 and resubmit to PSA so it's always going to be a loss to beckett
4 energy drinks probably means he was on something. Now that it’s worn off he’s got regret.
BGS makes it hard to grade with them and they are slow. PSA takes too long and it’s expensive. The best is SGC they are cheap and fast and they have the best customer service on god!
Not a fan of the grading market as a whole right now. Don’t like how PSA is the driving factor for purchasing. I like SGC personally and think the value of their grades will rise. But for Beckett to adjust their scale based on consumer feedback is sad. It’s like public schools adjusting the grading scale to get more kids to pass…. Collectors want better grades…. Send in better cards…. Parents want better grades…. Help you kids with their homework…. You cant adjust your system and change the rules just to make people feel better about how they spent their money
That is one thing BGS has that other grading card companies do need to add, are the sub grades. Yes i agree make them 10s, but do not get rid of the sub grades, terrible idea.
Yes, a 9.5 bgs doesn’t hold the same value as a psa 10 BUT a bgs 10 often holds a higher premium over a psa 10 bc as of right now we KNOW if becket put a 10 on a card, it really is a 10. They hardly ever give 10s when they aren’t warranted. ESPECIALLY a black label. I think if they do the same thing that cgc did, it will flood the 10s market with fake ones & then there is no more premium for them.
If you have to wait 2-3 months on a turn around and have to pay that price sucks on all the grading companies.
Bring back the old set this look is not good
Id take a Beckett with 4 9.5s over a PSA 10 any day
Yep, Beckett are more strict on the cormers, surface, edges and centering
Actually, PSA should change most of their PSA 10's to 9.5's. There is no such thing as an off centered 10, and PSA has a lot of them out there.
Beckett needs to improve their inner sleeve's clarity or get rid of it. It's the major reason why I don't grade with them anymore because the inner sleeves kill the slabs' displaybility
I believe they’ve made subtle improvements on this in the past couple years. Just an eye test, but the newer slabs & sleeves do seem a little clearer.
Beckett should buy Cards HQ
3:50 can’t disagree more. The purpose of a .5 grading scale with four categories of grading used to be valuable as it tells you exactly where your card maybe be flawed. You money chasers all just want stacks of Gem 10s which would seriously deflate the value of all other 10s across the hobby.
Free marketing for the re-auction. Thousand are now aware it’s on auction. It will go higher
I would use the word “stop”, rather than the other adjective that was used in this thumbnail
Psa should add a 9.5, I see 10's in their slabs that are not 10's, hell not even 9's
While they do need to figure this out, I do not want to see a card with zero sub grades as a 10 and see a 10 as the final grade.
Shout out The Card Life
if beckett converts 9.5s to 10s please let me know i will need to sell my premium-priced 10s before it gets diluted with lenient grades
Beautiful take on this.
KY and 115FC, bet he is also a yankees and cowboys fan too.
Imagine all the BGS 9.5 owners needing to send their cards back to get a Gem 10 slab! Sending cards valued in the tens of thousands back to be cracked out. Forget it!
does geoff have a big 9.5 card?? We need T-Pot to be the voice of reason.
Love subgrades. They need to keep them to remain being diff. Everyone has opinions but will complain no matter what, either way.
Keep up the good work
You call this work good?
The point of 9.5s becoming a 10 is a joke, TCG collectors crave the BGS 10 and black labels, One piece demand has helped them so much. Very naive to disregard TCG collectors as sports cards collectors
I think the only real thing stopping beckett from growing, is the cult like obsession people have with PSA. There are grading alternatives to PSA that are just as good, if not better in every way other than current number of cards graded. Becket set the standard for "special" labels when everything is 10 worthy. I really think they deserve more success. Hope they can compete on pricing and grow.
@blastingoff exactly. People don't realise BGS was still superior up until lockdown. Psa sorted their mess quicker then BGS. Not to mention most pre 2010s cards are in bgs slabs, majority of LeBron RPAs are in BGS slabs, most 90s grails are in BGS slabs Once this wave of new collectors die down, I'm sure people will use BGS more Psa is for a business but BGS is for the hobby
I’m sure TCG collectors would like their gem mint cards to be 10s too! They can still keep Pristine and Black Label as higher level 10s.
Nope! Beckett’s grading is sh*t, period. I have personally sent cards that were factor sealed, factor slab! And got back 9.5 and 9’s! Literally cards that were never touched. I call bull sh*t on them! You only get a 10 if you do a lot of business with them or the people working there give themselves 10’s! If you’re a small collector and send in one or two cards at a time you will never get a 10 out of Beckett! I quit doing business with them.
You haven’t seen the numbers right they are about to disappear as a grading company
LETS GOOOOOO!!
Simple: BGS upgrades all 9.5’s to 10s and all 10s to Black Labels. Everyone wins that way!
I've been saying Beckett 9.5s are dumb for 20 years.. don't want a "gem" grade with 9 corners. Plus i hate their thick slabs that weigh a pound, feels like you could throw it like a ninja star and kill someone with it
You no longer need 4 sharp corners to get a PSA 10
@@BrianPinas9 never have. PSA quality standards is trash.SGC is most consistent but nobody wants them either
I always thought the thick daddy unbreakable Bgs Ninja Chinese stars were bad ass with subs of course!
To Beckett: yes, it is necessary. I sent my idea for a change to Beckett for the second time. it would be a game changer. I would like to share my idea with sportscardinvestor
Beckett has no excuse for changing. PSA's reputation took a huge hit and they pivoted and recovered. Even though their prices have not gone down to the old days, they showed that as long as people view PSA as a high quality grading company, people will pay up.
There too many 10, need the system that coin grading companies use. (a 70-point system)
Really change the hobby and upgrade all 9.5s to an 11. 😂😂😂
I’m just going to collect rocks again
